Oh, okay, so as long as we've done stuff in high school, sports, etc, then we can talk about that?

Put it this way, a likely question is: "We know that getting into medschool is tough and mentally draining. Tell us what you do for fun, and how you unwound this year"

I'm not sure whether to be feeling nervous or relaxed so someone please consolidate me so I can enjoy my holiday haha . MEDSCI results came out today and now I'm sitting on a core GPA of 8.5 (keeping in mind the increased grade boundaries for this year i.e. A+ is 90% not 85%) with a UMAT of 88%ile (raw score of 61). I don't think I have an absolutely disgusting personality vis a vis the interview :P

You should be proud of your GPA 8.5 and the UMAT score, both of which are highly competitive. I am very sure you will get an interview offer with that GPA. With the % of A+ being raised to 90%, one can anticipate that the final cut off GPA would drop for this year’s cohort.

Like what they said in the admission seminar, the purpose of the interview is not to “Fail” candidates, but to weed out the really BAD ones (very few people get the auto-kick score). So I will say – go enjoy your holidays and you will be all rested and ready for your interview

I'd make peace with the fact that I've done my part and the rest is out of my hands and enjoy my break regardless. But hey that's just me. If it is any "consolidation", note it probably isn't since heck knows I'm no expert on the matter, it looks like you gave it a mighty effort! You should be right, I think.

I second this. Well said.

Does anyone have an idea of when offers for interviews might come out? Last year some people told me some offers were given only a few days before the interview... I'm not sure this year because most people have all of their results or 3 of 4 of their results for 2nd semester. I'm assuming the GPA cut off would also be slightly lower with the increase in GPA boundaries for BIOSCI 101,106,107 and MEDSCI 142 whereas the other papers have stayed fairly the same as previous years.

I got mine about a week before interviews last year. Some people got them a little earlier, and some people got them much much closer to their interview (i.e the day before!). They stagger the release too, so if your friend gets one and you don't not all hope is lost.

The GPA cutoff may be lower than last year, or it may be the same depending on how they scaled (i.e they might have just given everyone an extra 5% to make up for the boundary increases, I don't really know). It doesn't matter however as it is all relative to how the rest of your year group has done.

Goodluck in getting an interview and enjoy your holiday!

Hi guys, I just got my marks out and would like to know what you guys think of my situation,
I am sitting on an 8.25 GPA on my cores and 8.25 overall. my UMAT was 96th percentile and i have applied for Med 2012. I know that this is not the most "desirable" position to be in being kind of in the grey dangerous area. (i'm a little nervous about that since i have heard that last year the cut off for getting in was at about 8.5 dunno if that's true though)
I also would like to know how we get the invitation to the interview in the case we get one. I am kond of in a remote area and post often gets lost over here. do the e-mail us or will it show on student service online?
Any way I'd like to which good luck to everyone applying and enjoy your summer break.

8.25 core and 96th percentile umat is very good, I would say that puts you in the upper half of applicants. Don't stress - you have a very good chance.

last year they emailed the interview letters to us. Note that some people got as little as 2 days notice, whereas others (e.g. me) got about a weeks notice.

From my understanding and what the admin team said in the admission seminar, the candidates will be invited via email (I don't know whether they also sent out a snail-mail or what). So do check your email every day. If you are worried about not getting any sort of notification, give them a friendly call mid or late next week. As 4everalone said, some candidates in the past only had a day's notice.

I would say GPA 8.25 is a pretty good score and your UMAT score will put you on the high end in the UMAT spectrum, and mind you this year's raised boundaries for A+. They did mention that last year's "cut off" was around 8.5, but I wouldn't really call it "cut off" because the final rank consists of GPA, UMAT, and Interview score - you could only get a sense of "cut off". To demonstrate this point, I know someone whose GPA was 8.5 did not get the final offer (I have no idea this person's UMAT or interview score (whether he/she got the autokick)). What I am trying to say this: it's the combination of three scores that counts so the "cut off" can only be the result of the three, not GPA alone.

You have a good 25% worth of interview to work on and it's actually worth quite a bit, and let's not forget the golden ticket "auto-entry" if you hit the 10/10 mark!!!

hey Zinecca,
you mentioned "a sense of "cut off" in regards to GPA in previous years. would you consider there to be a sense of cut-off for UMAT?
thanks.

I really don't know because they never really disclose how they convert the UMAT score to a rank.

Also, at the beginning of the year I said I would do a post re interview info...is that still going to be useful or not worth it at this stage or doubling up on something we've already got?

FYI I got my interview offer yesterday at around noon so yes, some Auckland interview offers have come out. I'm pretty sure they stagger the offers so others should be getting theirs some time in the near future
