My core GPA was 8.75 and my non-core though it doesn't matter was slightly lower. My UMAT was 96%ile but I'm still concerned as I don't know how my interviewers thought of me. 8.25 still has a fairly good chance I would believe so as long as you did well in your interview which I hope you did. A number of my friends had exceptionally high GPAs eh.. I know so far around 11 people with 9 core GPA from undergrad I personally know 8 of those people and some of them have 100%-ile UMAT or in the high 90%-ile. However the interview is critical eh as we all know. I know of a girl who had 8.75 GPA and 95%-ile UMAT who got waitlisted and unfortunately didn't get in last year into MBCHB ll 2011

what was your gpa out of interest? do you think 8.25 is good enough for admission?

ok thanks. 8.75 is really impressive! was it pop health that caught you off? 11 people! wow that is a lot

Sadly it was MEDSCI 142.... ugh.... I worked so hard for it.... but narrowly missed perhaps from being in that 7.4%.... oh well hope my interview pulls me through though. And the best of luck to you.

thanks. of those 8 people you know who got 9.0 do they seem like people that would do well in interviews? i guess what i'm trying to say is that do they have lives outside of their text books? i dunno if this is a misconception or not

Well it's hard to make generalisations eh... I know that some of them have really wonderful experiences which give them a broader outlook on life eh... some of the guys that have 9 GPA have worked in charity services such as Kidsline and have gone to India to do voluntary work while others do quite a lot of sport particularly running. Having said that it has to be personally important to them eh... in the end I would believe you would have to show the interviewers how you relate to your experiences and what sort of qualities that you can bring into the medical profession.

Dunno so long as you can express to them why you would make a good doctor shouldn't matter. You need a seat from med school don't worry about others too much. Just focus on what you can do.

went to india! how the hell am i supposed to compete with that?! haha

Hmmm we'll just to have wait and see about that until the 22nd December then.

those people sound like they are pretty much in to med school already!

hahah na let's face it they ARE in already. they must be having a very relaxed holiday

I think you'll find they are not in fact 'in already'. I had a friend last year with a perfect GPA, >95%ile UMAT score, and who did plenty of extra-curricular activities and did not get in. I also knew people who had 9.0 GPAs and very high UMAT scores who did not get in.

What I'm saying is nobody is in until you get the accepted message on SSO, and it's silly to think otherwise!

Ok if you say so. But I honestly think they are already in, considering the number of seats has increased also. I dunno what happened with your friends, but these people seem to be on to it so I'm gonna put money on them getting in. Shall we bet on it?

Dylan, no one's saying that these people don't have a very good chance of getting in. They're just saying that nothing is certain until offers come out, especially given the fickle nature of interviews.

When it comes to medical school offers, nothing is ever certain until you receive an official offer.

Yeah that was what I was really trying to address at. Of course they do have a great chance of getting in compared to the rest of the cohort perhaps but as greenglacier said anything can really happen depending on performance at an interview which is a subjective form of assessment altogether. Anyway I have confidence that they will succeed in what they have strived for this year so I don't even have to gamble.

ok that's a fair point from you two. But I suppose we can say for certain that they have a better chance than you or I seeing as they did better than us in UMAT and GPA

If you wanna see in terms of UMAT and GPA definitely. I must tell you though the interview has quite a huge significant role to play though. 25% interview and the interview marking scheme is based on a ten point scale [please correct me if I'm wrong] one mark from the interview is worth 2.5% of the overall entry score for medical admissions into 2nd year. 1 core paper is worth 15% of the entire entry score for medical school as it is done out of 4 papers. 9 GPA A+ in a core paper is 15% and 8 GPA A in a core paper is 13.3% (3sf) which means 1 GPA difference equates to about 1.67% (3sf) of your overall entry score. Therefore I can conclude that the interview definitely is a significant assessment criterion which we must not neglect. The UMAT I'm confused to how it would play a significant role though?! It's based on raw score and I've heard and known of people who didn't get the most ideal raw scores but still got in.

tldr. But you seem like a person who would do well in an interview. Then again this is the internet haha. But I hope you and your friends all get in. I'm sure you all will, particularly your friends who seemed to have done everything right so far.

To my knowledge, the University has its own (unreleased) method of allocating marks to a raw UMAT score using a standard deviation curve. A raw score of 60 isn't worth vastly more than a score of 50 when it comes to Auckland's methods (despite a HUGE difference in %iles), which would explain why people get in even with seemingly low scores

Do they treat the raw scores of 2010 UMAT results and 2011 results the same, even though the 2010 exam was more difficult than this year's one?

Quirino Cheers mate. Yeah I was always confused at how on earth some people even with 30%-ile got in?!

plm8123 I would think they would wouldn't they? It could be to a degree unfair if that were the case but I personally would think GPA and Interview would play more pivotal roles would they not?
