Why is the Otago thread SO MUCH more active than this one? Where are all the Auckland people..?

probably because most of the people who go down to dunedin are moving cities too, so they've got more questions and they're more excited (?)

I also think that this site isn't exposed enough to people

We've got some fairly intense MSO'ers in the Otago corner (see: frootloop who posted a link to MSO on our cohort's facebook page). :p

I guess for the first years it's mainly luck of the draw though.

I am reading about orientation week, and there is something about the chemistry department and safety glasses/lab coats. Do we need safety glasses and lab coats? Where can you get them?

Yup safety goggles for chem, lab coat for all labs (except physics). Can buy them both from the chem department iirc, otherwise UBS also stocks them but at a rather pricey cost

what does 'iirc' mean? and would it be a good idea to get them at orientation week, or can you still get them later?
Also, how much are we looking at?

It's like $25 for the lab coat then $10 for the glasses. You'll use the lab coat for 5 classes, each of which has 6 labs, so ~30 labs in total in first year alone. Definitely not a wasted cost.

Thank you qbob!

So is everyone supposed to bring their labcoats to their very first lab as well? Are we just supposed to know that we need to have them? Do we just turn up to class in labcoats or do we go to the lab and then get changed? I can imagine getting many weird looks if i just walked around in a labcoat

Yup. You'll get told all this on the first day of lectures. Just go to the lab and chuck your labcoat on as you walk in. Don't want to look like a fool for too long!!

ok! I was asking because I have a lab on the first day of uni (after lectures in the morning), so unless I manage to buy a coat the the couple of hours between lectures and the lab, I won't have a coat for the lab. I can imagine quite a few people forgetting their lab coats on the first day though, is it a big deal if you don't have one?

like would you be asked to leave etc?

if you don't have a lab coat you can hire them for like $2 per lab or something. You will need one for the first lab.

Personally, I would go to uni on the thursday/friday before classes start and buy all the course books (NOT textbooks), and labcoat etc. That way you can avoid the lines, and not have to worry about that during o-week.

Classes start on Monday the 27th I think, and it is orientation week the week before. So 'the thursday/friday before classes start' is o-week?

I think I will have some time this thursday to get my course books/labcoats/etc. Is it too early/will the things (esp labcoats + glasses) be for sale now?

I know I have to buy course books for biosci101 and biosci107, but what about chem 110 and poplhlth111?

it seems the coursebooks for the biosci papers are on the UBS website, but not for chem or poplhlth? so will we get given those in class or have to buy them elsewhere or something?

on the orientation booklet thing it is said:
"Course folders for first semester Year 1 Chemistry courses can becollected from the Chemistry Laboratory G092"
does 'course folder' mean course book?

Hi @ChocolateSunshine

Yeah the Thursday/Friday of Orientation should be fine to collect your course books/lab coat etc. I'm not sure if the course books/lab coats will be available this week but you could always ring UBS and ask :)

You're right - the course booklets for CHEM (which come in the course folder) can be collected from one of the chem laboratories - the course co-ordinators should put an announcement up on Cecil of the times for collection closer to lectures starting. Likewise, from memory, details of the POPLHLTH course book collection will be put on Cecil close to lectures starting, but there's no harm in seeing if it is being sold at the UBS now.

I did OLY1 in 2009, so things may have changed but hopefully that will be of some help. Someone kindly correct me if I'm wrong :)

Umm so I enrolled for first year biomed and my timetable looks like I'll be stuck in the SAME lecture theatre all afternoon .. I was just wondering if it is ... 'right'???

and also, are the textbook costs covered when we pay for the courses? I'm thinking they are separately paid aren't they...

Looks almost identical to my first semester timetable for OLY1...clearly things don't change much! And yup all in the same lecture theatre...moving THAT many people to different theatres at the same time is a rather mighty hassle!

Textbooks are not covered in course fees...they are up to you to pay for separately if you wish to own them (see below for thoughts on buying textbooks)

some courses include the coursebooks in the fees, while others don't. e.g. chem and medsci include the coursebook in the fees, whereas wit biosci you'll have to buy the coursebook extra ($20ish).

Don't buy a labcoat and safety glasses from UBS - they're a total rip off. Wait until you collect your course book for chem and buy the labcoat and glasses from the chem department.

[offtopic]That timetable posted on the previous page looks... Hellish. 4 lectures in a row, 3 times a week? No thanks.[/offtopic]

yeh, you definitely need to get some fresh air after the first two lectures.

Also, does Auckland have more contact (teaching) hours than otago ?

In first year (because I have no idea how many contact hours the respective schools have after that :p ) there are the same contact hours, if I've counted right from that timetable (4 x 4 lectures a week, 2 labs a week), in semester one. Our contact hours shrink by quite a bit in semester two though (HEAL192 has one less lecture/week, and shorter tutorials, plus we only have to take 3 papers in semester two).
