argh, thats so frustrating.. But i guess if they were willing to risk their exam being voided to cheat they cant have been doing that well anyway (i hope). That alarm fully destroyed my concentration i had going =( hope we get scaled up since other groups didnt get kicked out for 20 minutes. Mm was hoping to see if anyone had had experience in the matter. thanks anyway.
 That is very unfair if people were discussing answers and looking at their books? Why did the examiners not do anything about it?!

And indeed, he does deserve to have the opportunity to become a doctor. Personally, I would say empathy is fundamentally more important than being able to handle the stress of exams, as when it comes down to it, a good doctor is one with good motivations and who authentically cares for his/her patients. Handling stress is something you can learn through experience, empathy is deeper I think. True empathy is really caring for others - it is a mindset and not a skill.

Agreed. Although empathy, or at least fake empathy can be trained for. That's what people have told me all the 'touchy-feely' stuff in medical degrees is for.

Hope your friend gets that A or A+ that he deserves lol.

Anyone here from Macleans?

Quilters remarks

Hey guys,

Sorry to hear about your friend >_<.

I'm from Pakuranga College :D,

Have you guys read what Quilter said on cecil about the fire alarm? A few things I would like to say about that, although some of you may have been disadvantaged i.e: you were in the zone and the fire alarm yes that may have hindered your performance somewhat and I would be pissed of as well. But I didn't like how they mentioned that people who read there books may have only been slightly advantaged because I don't think that's the case, if I had a few minutes to look at the book I could have easily picked up quite a few marks in particular one of my flow diagrams, a few little things here and there and easily gained possibly 20 something marks especially because you're able to see the paper, and know what to look for in the book. I'm just not happy about that and this could be someone's place in medicine on the line, because 20 marks could be the difference between a 7,8 or 9 GPA and possibly screw you over. All in all just a bit annoyed at the people who looked at there book and discussed the exam.
If anything the invigilator should have stopped that.

Cheers guys,
Good luck for the rest of your exams

Amen. It's really quite discouraging knowing you've worked so hard, yet some got a dishonest and unfair advantage. It's unacceptable. But really there is nothing they can do about it... unless they had security cameras ^_^ which I don't think they do. How did people get their notes anyway? In an alarm aren't you meant to leave your bag where it is?

I heard that there weren't a real fire. And my friend brought it up that someone might have deliberately pulled the fire alarm. Don't know what actually happened though.

You guys should complain to the examinations office. Though I don't really know what can be done now, it can't hurt to anyway. If anything, maybe the examinations office will own and fire the dumb invigililator who didn't bother to do anything about blatent cheating.

I know, it's the perfect crime. Get someone to set off the alarm in your exam room, then have a quick look at your course guide and ace the exam. Colin and Peter are apparently dealing with it, but I really don't know what they can do. They would never just go off our test/lab marks would they?

....

Yeah we should complain ourselves.

I mean it is the perfect crime! It's just scary that someone might be taking my place in medicine, and the thing is the MEDSCI exam is a core paper so it does matter in terms of selection, so I think it's a big issue! Problem is, what can you do? Apart from a full resit of the exam which would be stupid, and obviously wouldn't work.

Lol I kinda wish I was in that room but I don't think I could do it, cheat... that's probably the only rule I've followed for all these years.....

What would you guys do to fix this problem?

Use the test and lab marks and discount the exam altogether

Mm, I talked with one of the examiners during the fire alarm and she just referred to the talking as "oh well, what can you do about that".. Pretty painful hearing all these people exchanging answers which meant they could have done a lot better than they deserved.. I dont think theres anything you could do about it, there were just too many people and the dishonest ones are just going to deny it anyway.

The ones who asked about the exam during the alarm should be struck by lightning to be split into two from cranial to caudal end. And then expelled from the University and the whole of NZ Universities. That is bold cheating! They have a lot of cheating policies in Uni.. but they don't call it cheating?!! What the!? Stupid Examiners!! That should be the time that examiners' radar about cheaters will have the greatest sensitivity... They should have caught about 50 cheaters when that happened.. What's the use of examiners?!?! Just to supervise the students.. lame!! Their main aim should be catching cheaters during exam and put them where they should be. They are totally missing the point of their existence. *sigh*

Using the test marks and lab marks would raise another issue. For example, some people did badly in their test or/and their labs might have worked extra hard (or improved their learning methods) for the exam to make up for it. And because the exam counts for 60% of the total weight so i don't think a test (28%) and labs (which we all got different tutors) can be a fair representation of a student's academic ability. Also a friend of mine who's doing health science said that when they had the test they also had two other tests in the same week which meant they didn't have as much time to prepare compared with us biomeders, but for the exam we had the biosci106 before medsci so if only taking the test marks would disadvantage them. And i think he has a point. What i think is best is that they should increase the % of students getting A+. Even though this way some of the cheated ones will also get advantaged, but at least the whole effect of Medsci paper on the Med selection is minimised so that other 3 core papers counted more(?) But that also means the interview panel need to be extra careful to pick up some cheaters (don't how they can do it tho)
Mmm this somehow remind me of the screwed up POPHLTH111 test we had last semester.

The aim of examiners is to stand there, chat with themselves and get easy money  That is if they get paid. If not, hehe, then more reason for them to just be there and not bother doing no-thing.
When i was there i just tood there with my friend staring at each other. Then we heard someone telling someone else "the reason for movement in uterine tube are hair-like structures and gravity"!
Positive thinking, the students who have read their books are so stupid that they didn't mind risking being caught so they probably did badly anyways. And the ones exchanging answers, mmm who knows they didn't screw each other over ^_^

Really guys, calm down. It doesn't really matter if others cheat; what's important is that you were true to yourself. Yes, I want to get into medicine a lot, and I would do a lot to get in, but not everything and anything. If I cheated to get in, I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

And in all honesty, Colin did say it was better to have a hard test than an easy one, because they can just add marks. If the health sci people had two tests before the medsci test, and we had the biochem exam before our exam, it kinda balances out, right?

OTT: Has anyone tried putting their finger on the fire alarm switch when the glass is broken? It's really hard to not just switch it on lol.

@douseewhatisee: lol is it just me or is there like a total of 50 people going for med from around Bucklands Beach and Pakuranga?

Screw that, we should complain, Dr. Quilter would be proud of us if we did (remember beginning of the semester). I say we at least try rather than sit around complaining on MSO

As to a solution, i think its somewhat fair to look at biosci107 since it was similar in material. But since the medsci exam covers the entire semester's syllabus, i think they should also look at chem110, since thats a science paper and that paper is honestly the best indicator of how well a student is academically

I've emailed the examinations office and they sent a generic type email back

Yeah Hamlock it seems like everyone around Bucklands Beach wants to study medicine.

I reckon the idea of combining first semester papers with the semester sounds alright. Possibly considering only the first 3 core papers, rather than MEDSCI?

What do you guys think of that?

Just wanted to say I'll be writing a letter of complaint as well. Anyone else want to join the band wagon and write one?

You should each individually send in identical letters, or maybe right a single letter...and get everyone to sign it, like while you're outside waiting for your next exam. If that fails - Hikoi.
