i was in one of those exam rooms...man you would not believe how many people were swapping answers...SO UNFAIR! and how could people have been looking at their notes because we all had left our bags in the lecture room. totally broke my concentration, despite having the first hour go well for me it really does muck you up!

hope we have to resit it...or like g.walker said just look at biosci and chem marks...looking at test marks would be unfair (especially if people had done really well in the exam by some freaky chance)...looking at other core papers would be good - and as colin said they're a good indicator of how well you would do in the exam

sorry...end of my rant :) Good luck for physics everyone :)

Here is the reply...

William

Thank you for your email letter of concern. This is indeed an unfortunate incident in an important examination caused by a false alarm. Segregation of classes proved very difficult given the number of people who evacuated the building. Medical Health and Science have issued the email below which you may have received. Marking will proceed and be reviewed however it is premature to say what action might be taken until marking has been completed. The faculty will be in touch further if there is relevant information to be passed on to affected students.

so they're going to mark the exams...looks like a resit is unlikely. just can't believe how insanely unfair it is, i know colin only said people would have a small advantage but come on, if you know what's in the exam and you look at your notes you can do really well :bored:

it really does look deliberately done, it unrealistic that it just so happened that some people left their notes outside the exam hall...

say whats the email of the examination office?

oh so that's how people got their notes (sorry dumb moment)...god i was wondering HOW people could have looked at their notes when our supervisors told us to just get up and leave without bags etc

but yes, i do think it was probably planned - just seems too much of a coincidence that it would go off in the most important exam this semester

do you think if enough students complain, they will do something about it? because (and yeah i know this sound whiney) this is an important paper for med and it could jeopardise heaps of people's places in med.

sorry again for a whiney rant but i'm really really annoyed, it's really eating away at me off that some people get an unfair advantage :(

i'd sign it...not great at writing formal letters of protest :P

this isn't on, it's gets more and more competitive each year and it's really really unfair. Colin's a good guy, and i'm sure he'll do something that'll work for everyone

Say, those who were in the rooms where this happened, did the supervisors tell you guys where the evac. meeting point would be at the start of the examination?

I was in MLT1, we got hushed outside to just where the quad place is (just outside our physics lecture) so it was pretty impossible to keep track of everyone since it got mixed with exams for other courses. The examiners kinda just stood around, didnt walk through to check who was silent etc. till toward the end where this one lady stood up on bench and said we'd have to resit if the talking continued. Subsided then but yeah =/ was about 10min after evacuation so didnt stop much..

I dont think so, unless i didnt hear. They waited for a couple of minutes before leading us all just outside. Cant have been hard to predict we were just going to be lead outside onto the concrete though

my friend wrote out quite a good letter to them. it'd be pretty hard to get people at phys160 to sign a letter, so if you guys wanna pass this one on to anyone you know or something like that, hopefully we'll get something done

[offtopic]Dear Recipient

I'd like to bring to your attention the breach of exam regulations that occurred on Tuesday, 3 November 2009, regarding the MEDSCI142 fire alarm incident.

I'd like to highlight the following from the Examination Instructions document - that was sent to all students along with their examination schedules - under Emergency Evacuation Procedures:

 • In the event of an emergency during an examination, the supervisors will direct you to your evacuation meeting point. Examination conditions will still apply, therefore no talking is permitted. The supervisors will announce at the start of the examination, the relevant evacuation meeting point for your room.
Clause 8e of the Examination Regulations of The University of Auckland Calendar states

 • A candidate must not communicate with another candidate in the examination room or copy from another candidate’s answers.
It has come to the other students' attention, including myself, that both these regulations were breached by some of the candidates, and that the examination supervisors failed to act in a fair manner.

Finally, I'd like to point out the statement printed in bold at the bottom of each page of the Examination Instructions document

 • Cheating is a serious offence with severe penalties and will not be tolerated
Kindly advise me on what the examination board decides to do regarding this event.

Thank you

In the examiner people's defense, there was another lady I think who walked around telling people to shut up. And yeah, they didn't tell us (MLT1) where the evacuation area was until after the bell started.
