You could think about contacting AUSA, like the president or whoever is education representative as well.

But toaster, what could the education rep do? Do they have a lot of power/ enough influence to actually persuade the med board/medsci coordinators to do something?

Well I was just thinking maybe the rep knows high level university people and has interactions with exam office people, sits on some committees, and generally as he is the elected representative of the whole student body, then he probably carries some weight as well. Its just another possible avenue. To be honest, I don't think anything that any student could do would get them to do anything about it. Its much easier for them just to ignore you guys, send you a letter pretending to care, but do nothing.

i know its unfair

but its a difficult situation to manage for them because medsci 142 has a class of like 1000 or more

so i don't think they'll be so quick to act

i dunno what they're going to do,

maybe mark them and see if theres any significant difference between the marks in the rooms that were affected vs the rest or whatever

i think the sudden disruption in concentration would actually affect you more rather than the sharing of answers since you're all pretty smart :)

@ Dogtown: yeah i know it's a difficult paper to mark in terms of sheer numbers, but i was in the middle of my renal flow chart.. not so good (i mean i finished it but it still took me a while to get my train of thought back...)

@ Toaster: any chance 2nd-6th year med students might back us up? They might listen to you guys...

hmm, AUMSA's president knows the coordinators quite well but i dont see why they'd get involved

I meant AUSA, rather than AUMSA. AUMSA wouldn't get involved, though if this sorta thing happened in one of my exams AUMSA definitely would do something, and would probably get something done about it too. For you guys though, it would be AUSA that is relevant. I would hope that AUSA would do something, because its AUSA's job to handle things like these on behalf of students.

they're not, but we are part of the FMHS according to the handbook, and most biomeds are probably going for med and i thought perhaps the older med students might say something...long shot i know

hope AUSA/anyone can get something done

Increasing or decreasing the boundary will be unfair for either the students that did not cheat or the rest of us in different rooms.

A very tricky plank to walk on, this situation is. :bored:

Or set the A+ boundary at 82. I think that way there's a large enough window to prevent people from complaining because they did get A+, and it won't really change who gets an interview.

Besides, it would be exceedingly difficult to find the people who actually cheated.

You know what, we might as well take Dr. Quilter's word for it and focus on our coming exams, I got faith in the man, he wouldnt be one to let us down

Wow, it seems like a lot of people were affected by the fire alarm, or most of my friends were anyway. Where was it anyway?

I wasn't affected but I'll sign the letter if everyone here wants to gather up after Physics or something.

Good luck to everyone for the rest of their exams!

Hey guys, long time reader, first-time poster in relation to the MEDSCI 142 issue.

Even though the announcement made via Cecil suggested that some students being disadvantaged and some advantaged would have balanced out I think the pendulum would have likely swung towards the latter. And as we know the exam is scaled so any advantages to other students (through unauthorised means no less) affects the rest of us negatively.

I think it's important we take collective action, as obviously we have all worked extremely hard over the course of the semester and it would be devastating to not receive the grade we rightfully deserve. Individual letters in a class of 1200 may not be very effective and would swamp the department administrators, but as others have mentioned a common petition regarding what we believe are suitable outcomes and signed by a large cohort could be a lot more beneficial. In saying that, I have faith that Colin Quilter and Peter Riordan will do what is fair and just to right the issue.

It just irks me that numerous students who obviously want to be the future doctors and an integral part of the medical profession are willing to resort to such desperation. Maybe at about this point they should be revising what area of the workforce they are better suited to.

To everyone else, keep up the good work and good luck for your remaining exam(s).

Indeed, but what would the petition actually say/demand?

I'm not sure we're in a position to be demanding anything but possibly a list of what we believe suitable outcomes are for this situation (e.g. grade boundaries lowered, different grade boundaries for rooms affected(?), less weighting placed on the final exam etc.).

Of course the final decision will be left up to the course coordinators and the Examination Office but it's also important we collectively express our concern at this issue so it is not taken lightly.

Mm.. but i really hope they dont increase grade boundary/scale less for the MLT1 group.. It's really unfair to those of us that didn't cheat :bored:
