Hi g.walker, you are right. What i meant was that they turned down people with 8.5 for medicine, not for the interview. For the interview my guess would be 7.25-7.5 this year based on medsci results (and assumptions on other papers). Also don't forget that only the people with GPA range 8.5-9 will get in. There's still this thing called auto-entry. That's why i don't feel "sorted" lol.

Auto-entry into medicine with a core GPA of 8.5-9? Aren't there many people in the past that have been in that range and turned down?

Personally, as a patient, I'd much rather have a doctor that had a GPA of 8.0 at university (and is obviously still a hard-working individual) but is a good communicator and more confident in his role than a doctor who had a perfect GPA but is unable to connect on a social level. I think the admissions sub-committee would also be of a similar mindset.

Ive heard of people with GPAs of 9 who got turned down, i guess they stuffed up bad. but now that you mention it i take back what i said about us needing a B in the interview, with the whole net 80 seats for first years im worried as hell now TBH, sighhh

I dont think they have a set number for auto entry, that sorta contradicts the whole point of it to begin with, either way i thinks it's more or less negligible.

Me too!! And i heard some interviews last year only took like 15 minutes. I really wonder how they can tell if a person is suitable of being a doctor just by talking to him for quater an hour. I mean, i tend to get nervous talking to a stranger in a formal occassion for the first few minutes or so. And when it comes to public speeches my mind goes completely blind. But i guess a doctor need to be able to warmly address to his patient from the start. Btw is anyone taking interview courses or any sorta prep courses?

ah screw that mate, we made it this far, and frankly i dont want to add another $500 to my loan on something that just MIGHT help. Im just goin in with some self confidence and some valium if i can find any around :D

Congrats for all the good results!
Just wondering how's everyone's GPA for the 4 core papers. Mine's 8.5 (damn POPLHLTH). Don't know what sort of score is needed for the interview:unsure:

By the way, any idea on what the cut-off point for the interview is gonna be this year? Seeing not very many people got A+ in medsci, my guess is 7.25-7.5

probably 7.5 in line with last year I say

I recommend you med candidates to practice interview with your friends and each other (note: real friends and not cut throat people). Hopefully you don't make an enemy out of each other lol. Honestly $500 for a 1 day workshop is a big rip off, I have never heard of anyone who actually went to attend them (there must be a few but I don't personally know anyone).

Best advice around is really to be yourself, don't lie because you can shoot yourself in the foot once they want you to follow up on what you've said.

Just to clear some things up, the "auto-entry" scheme is where you attain a perfect score in your interview. In the very rare case that does happen, you will get into med regardless of your GPA and UMAT (of course it means you have to be able to get an interview to start off with). This may be why some people with GPA 7.5 do get in med.

There is also an "auto-kick" scheme (or whatever you call it) is where the interviewer feels that you must not be allowed into med and fails you at the interview. So regardless of your GPA, you will definitely not get into med. This may be why some GPA 9 students don't get in

Some interviews last year were 15 mins only, but it was because they were running out of time. My interview was like 25 mins only. But my slot was right before lunch so maybe that's why lol.

Anyway you do have to do pretty well in your interview, I think Michelle (that asian lady who's involved in selection process) told me that the cut off in my year was 7.5 interview score (or was it 7, can't remember the exact number).

last i asked it was random

Last year I had the impression that they make rounds of interview offers starting with the people with the highest GPA+UMAT. So the people that get invited first, and have interviews first are the GPA 9s...then it works down to whatever, last year I think that was around 7.5. But I don't know for sure.

But I thought the interviewers were not meant to be aware of your marks, as that would bias their marking?

Even though they say that i think maybe they still "sorta" knew your gpa. What i knew for sure tho, that there was an asian guy who tipped off his perfect gpa to the interviewers. Don't know if it helped or not, but he did get into med:lol:

If they interview ppl based on gpa, then mine will be in around the middle, like the 10th-ish?

That is true, but I don't think its the interviewers that make the order. They just get given a list of people to interview on a certain day. Anecdotally, it seemed to me that the order was in order of GPA starting from high. But it may have just been something that happened last year. A 3rd year med student who helped with the interviews said last year the invite process was a real shambles, people having to be rung on the day of their interview to ask if they could come in in a couple hours time.

Sorry, you are right, UMAT isnt included.

Congratulations dip! What day's your interview?

Could I also ask which email the invitation came to? Was it your preferred email address on nDeva or your uni email?
