Bond Bond Medicine: General Discussion

Does anyone know where i can get the extra 250k (maybe loans from banks)?

Most Bond students rely on Mum&Dad bank, or in some cases mum&dad re-mortgage their house to get the money. We don't know of any banks that provide this loan to students.

Just confirmed the replies from A1 and Dotwingz with a mate who works at ANZ. They said “no deal” for a loan. The only option via a bank would be a remortgaged house as per A1 (which, given interest rates are very low at the moment, may be the way some people go).

This is for anyone applying to Bond: does anyone feel a level of guilt in applying? For me, its the fact that 1. It's FFP, I understand I'm in an extremely fortunate position in being able to afford the fees and this isn't a position that everyone is in, hence it makes the pool of applicants a lot narrower compared to public universities. 2. I feel like I'm almost cheating the system as they do not take UCAT for entry (i.e. do I deserve to study med if I do not achieve the required UCAT score?). I might be overthinking things, let me know if anyone else has experienced this.

Lots of universities don’t use UCAT, though? All graduate entry courses, plus USyd, UMelb, Griffith, and JCU.

It’s definitely a good personal growth move to acknowledge your relative privilege and also to acknowledge the relative lack of (SES-based) diversity that a Bond Uni cohort will largely involve so you can ensure your worldview doesn’t narrow and your idea of what’s ‘normal’ doesn’t lose perspective.

But worrying about a lack of UCAT is definitely a bridge too far. Do you think JCU and Griffith students are undeserving of a medical degree?

That is a fair point. I definitely did not consider JCU and Griffith, that's a great perspective, I guess its more so the FFP aspect. I guess I'm being a bit too pedantic about it.

You’ve def thrown the baby out with the bath water re: not being valid enough because you didn’t do well in the UCAT, although it’s quite a common question for feeling “bad” for taking the FFP... a spot that not many could take

Imo Bond Uni and the like (Melbourne, MQ) are cheating the system, although as LMG said, as long as you are socially conscious and not losing sight that the group you will hanging around with at Bond does not represent to normal life for many in this country, I don’t personally see the issue at large.

If no one took them because they felt guilty, it would be full of people who had no moral compass re: these issues.

As a side note, Bond isn’t your last chance for medicine... there’s always graduate entry and nonstandard which represent the lion share of places in Australia. If you don’t feel 100% about the commitment then there’s nothing wrong with rejecting Bond

I strongly disagree with this view^. Practically all Aus med schools are teaching tons of international FFP students, in particular UNSW with 100, Monash almost 100, UQ 80 (non-Oschner), USyd 60. Hundreds of these int'l students then get Aus intern/doctor jobs a year.

These int'l students pay higher fees so likely are even more privileged than Aus FFP students. Has anyone thought UNSW Monash UQ USyd are cheating the system?

If that’s your University GPA you have a great chance of getting selected for testing.
yes, it's my current GPA after completed 1 full-time study, however, I want only my GPA to be considered as my atar was not high enough which I believe has to be one and a half years does that mean I can only apply after 2 years of my bachelor as I cant apply mid year ?

does that mean I can only apply after 2 years of my bachelor as I cant apply mid year ?
Correct, unless you do another semester, defer and apply at the end of the year, in which case you'd only have 1.5 years of study completed.

Isn't that table for QUT applications?
It is on the QUT website, yes, but it’s very clear that the same (or at least very similar) conversions are used at other unis which need to distinguish between school-leaver and non-standard applicants e.g. Griffith uses it for dentistry.

Given that QTAC performs the calculations for each of the universities, it would make the most sense that a consistent conversion system is used.

Hi guys
I am thinking of applying to Bond University for their medicine program (I am aware of the cost). I've had some people tell me that it will be difficult to get myself into residency programs and specialist positions as applicants from other universities are favoured over Bond. I would like to know if this is the case?
Thank you in advance

I haven’t heard anything of that nature, I’ve heard quite the opposite, something to the effect of ‘no one cares about what Uni you trained at once you’ve graduated’. They look at how good of a doctor you are.
