Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

hey guys
just a question in regards to Satisfactory and unsatisfactory units which dosent give you a mark. for instance someone completing the first year of nursing which contains 2 or 3 units that have S/U grading.if someone gets a gpa of 7 from the first yr at nursing, wondering how they will be assessed by Griffit uni or QTAC.
They count towards the 1FTE minimum requirement, but they aren't used in the GPA calculation. In your example, there would be 5 7s and 3 ungraded passes, which would be calculated as a GPA of 7.

Despite having a gpa of 7, will they be ranked lower by Griffit or any other dental school for having 3/8 ungraded (satisfactory) subjects.
Asking this because Griffit was favoring HD (85) over HD(80).

No, I don’t believe they would be. You could contact Griffith directly for an answer in writing, though.

The reason 85 and 80 are not given the same score is because Griffith considers 85+ a HD. If someone’s transcript records a score between 80 and 85, this will be given a grade of 6. If no score is recorded, only the official grade (HD), then it would be given a 7 by Griffith. This isn’t comparable to the graded/ungraded subjects situation, though,

Sorry, but your question doesn’t make sense (at least not to me). Are you saying you already have a place offer for Griffith dentistry and you need to enrol soon? What does you enrolling in a course have to do with Griffith’s GPA calculation method?

(Also, have you not already had that question answered? If you don’t trust the answer you’ve received on here then you should contact Griffith directly, as we can’t do more than repeat the answer you’ve already been given).

thanks Crow for the response. sorry as i didnt fully explained.
i am planning to do a bachelor of nursing as a pathway to get into Dentistry, since first year of nursing has 3 Satisfactory unit, I was a bit worried on how Griffit/ Qtac going to assess having 1FTE with 3/8 satisfactory units. I took your advice and have contacted Griffit but it has been weeks that I havent received a response from them. and I have a deadline to accecpt or reject the nursing course.

First question: would you be happy in a nursing career if you don’t end up getting into dentistry? I am of a personal viewpoint that all degrees should be completed on their own merits and not merely as a stepping stone into another degree (as unfortunately the majority of dentistry applicants do not gain entry due to the sheer number of competitive applicants outweighing the number of places available).

WRT your current situation: enrol in the nursing degree. You have until the census date to drop it if you so desire and you’ll have no financial or academic penalties. Seeing as email contact hasn’t worked, I would call the dentistry faculty directly (make sure you speak to someone from dentistry rather than a general admissions staff member) to get an answer, as I suspect they may just ignore your email altogether.

Did you phone Griffith, ask to speak to someone in Dent admissions, and remain on the phone until you spoke to someone who could answer your question with certainty? Or did you just send an email and then waited weeks for a reply without following up?

If the latter, then do the former. And once you get an answer, ask for it in writing while you’re on the phone.

thank you so much. I am fairly happy to make nursing as a career, I contacted Griffit student central and they advised me to email as they didnt have any answer to my question. Does dentistry faculty has a contact number or its best to call student central and they will transfer me to that faculty.

I emailed them without any following up, Because I thought they gonna get back me soon. I will definitly call them also to get a response in writing.

I’d call student central and insist on being put through to dental admissions. Explain that you’ve already emailed weeks ago, but not received a response, and that you need to finalise your enrolment.

What do you mean by satisfactory units? Does that mean if you take bachelor of nursing and don’t enrol in any of the courses listed in the requirements (aka just taking 8 random electives in the 1FTE) it won’t be considered as 8 GPA 7s when applying for Griffith dentistry?
I guess "satisfactory units" means they only have Pass and Fail (not the usual GPA 1-7).

I don’t even think that’s possible, as the enrolment system (at least at Griffith) almost “pre-fills” your subjects, so that you can only select the amount of electives your course allows you to take. Satisfactory units are non-graded, so you either finish with a fail grade or an ungraded pass (UGP) on your transcript.

I’ve enrolled in Bachelor of Occupational Therapy before and managed to do an entire year with free choice electives only though :0 I’ve never experienced issues with it in the past
Why did you do that? Haha

(To answer your above question, you’d still get a GPA from doing that, and you’d still be eligible for dentistry/other course applications - you just wouldn’t be eligible for the bachelor degree you’ve enrolled in, because you’d just be completing units that aren’t going towards your course requirements).

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate thread. However I just wanted some advice/input on my situation.

I took up a dentistry offer at JCU this year and moved over 2000km from home. I desperately wanted to go to CSU but only just missed out (the course director told me I was just below the last offer made in the rural stream and that in the rural stream the candidates don't decline their offers as much as the city stream so you have to be more at the top etc to get an offer). I'm really unsure whether I should stay here or try again for CSU. I flew to JCU very rushed and not wanting to go but feeling like I had to as I'd already told everyone I was leaving at work/family etc. There's no guarantee I'd ever get into CSU so it's a big risk and most people say if you've got a dentistry offer don't let go of it etc but it's not that easy when you're the one living it. I hate being so far from home and am prone to getting severely depressed throughout my life. I'm also getting towards mid twenties which makes me think a five year degree shouldn't be put off. I can probably defer JCU and see if I get into CSU for 2021 but again I may just be delaying JCU if I still can't get in.

If dentistry is your passion I would def stay. Entry into ANY Australian dental school is a mission within itself! You might be able to apply for transfer for 2021 second year?? You r young, it gives u opportunity to be on your own, independence, self growth

Your health should always be put first. If the move is negatively affecting your mental health then this should be the first and foremost factor in your decision making.

Can you defer?

If it is seriously affecting your mental health, see a psycharist and get a medical certificate to defer. Just be honest and don't fake. JCU knows you've been to JCU and it should make your deferral application more genueine.
