Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

Hey does anyone know whether UQ historically have top-up Dent offers? Have received a Griffith offer which I'm elated by, and hadn't even entertained the possibility of getting a UQ offer, though saw this post and wondered whether my statistics (7 GPA albeit 1 year FTE, and a UCAT of 2820 with 586 SJT) might have me in with a chance.

Though obviously who knows what other factors might have been at play (e.g. perhaps this GPA was held over a longer time period, or in an honours or masters)

I think if you put UQ Dent as 1st Pref, you may have had the offer in the 1st round because a few people with 89%ile (2820 & 2830) got UQ Med BMP and historically Med BMP cutoffs are slightly higher than Dent ones. Your right pref order should be UQ Dent first then Griffith Dent. Even you haven't got the former in 1st round, you will still get the latter and you can conditionally accept it and keep UQ Dent as the 1st pref for the subsequent rounds. Nevertheless, you still have the chance for second round. Good luck!

I did have it as first. Seems the Dent cutoff was higher than med this year. Fingers crossed tho! Am sure a few people will inevitably give up their Dentistry place (likely for Med somewhere as is common), so hopefully I'll get a call up in the near future :)

Hi! So I’ve applied for 3 courses at La Trobe, one being Dental Science (Regional), the other being Dental Science and lastly Computer Science.

So far I’ve only gotten an offer for Computer Science and I only got this two days ago. So I’m waiting for my Dental Science offer to come through but I had to confirm on how long I had until I could apply for the course and such so I called La Trobe today and someone told me that the lapse date for the offer was the 27th and how i can cancel the course on the 31st of March and that they’d email be the information. Couple of minutes later I got the email and it said that the lapse date was the 17th, which is today’s date. So i talked to my dad about this and he told me to accept it incase the lapse date was actually today.

Now I don’t know how this will affect my chances of getting offers for the dental courses that I also applied to. So my question is, can I get more offers for different courses from the same uni?

Thank you so much for you time
-Aryan C.

Yes, you can, as long as the offer you’re hoping for is a higher preference than the one you’ve accepted.

Hey guys
Just want to know that if CSU and Latrob current students doesn't require to do UCAT to get into dentistry this year . Also is interview required for latrob if you are thier current student.

what are the chances of getting your higher course preferences through QTAC when you conditionally accept? Have many people gotten their higher ones or nah?

Hi guys I'm trying to get into la trobe dental science via internal transfer - can someone who has done this or knows someone tell me what they did in their experience to get there. I'm doing science and am hoping to get 90+ wam to increase my chances but feeling a bit doubtful given how hard uni is apparently compared to highschool. I will try hard regardless this year but I'm looking for a quantified standard to help push myself to get to my goal because people say to me to do my best when i dont even know what my best is (if that makes sense). I had a mid 98 atar and even though a lot of people praised me for doing my 'best', I really felt I could have did better in my exams.

I know a person that got an 86 wam but wasn't accepted due to availability of spots and the biased selection process towards school leavers but he worked his ass off all year. This makes me a bit discouraged because I'm not a talented person (i get shitted on by all the aptitude tests like the ucat and the gat) so despite my efforts im getting deeply irked i will suffer the same fate as this guy.

TLDR: nonschool leavers in your experience how hard did you work to get an internal transfer (or external) to la trobe. what ideal wam goal should i set for myself to secure a place.

Thanks

Hi, Latrobe students are not required to sit an interview or do the ucat.

You may want to read this document:

The wam cut-off for physiotherapy was 87 in 2017 and physiotherapy is less competitive than dentistry. Someone else on this forum had a wam of 90.9 and received offer, so you need 90+ to be competitive and 95+ to be safe. Or alternatively you can do a course at a different uni, redo the ucat and apply for external transfer.
However, latrohe has been restructuring its health science courses and entrance into dentistry might change. Furthermore, they also began to accept international students this year and thus entrance for domestic students may become even more competitive. Additionally, Latrobe never publishes the requirements for non-standard applicants so evesrything is uncertain.

This thread is dedicated to Latrobe dentistry:

Hey, I did exactly this pathway in 2019 and was successful with a WAM of 90.9.

I don't necessarily want to scare you away, but frankly I would seriously caution you against taking this path unless you're willing to diversify your options with the UCAT, and apply everywhere (e.g. CSU, Griffith, UQ, Adelaide). This year it seems the minimum WAM for internal transfer was a 90, and realising this score was hands-down the most challenging task I've ever undertaken. I've heard it said that for 2020 entry there were over 200 applicants for 5-7 internal transfer places, and have received so many private messages on this forum alone from others who were unsuccessful despite amazing WAMs in the high 80s.

Frankly it's a huge gamble of a year with poor odds. Not only are you reliant on hard work and personal drive, but so much of your success will be determined by how generous your markers are, and how fortunate you are with group projects - factors beyond your control. Throughout my year in Bundoora I met several aspiring Physios and Dent students who were despairing that slack group members had sunk their chances. It's just the most awful feeling to go through the year knowing that any mark that starts with an 8 is going to undermine your chances.

Hi

I just finished first year of Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland last year and after being waitlisted for medicine, i've started considering Denstistry both in Australia and New Zealand. Are there any Dental Schools in Australia that accept non-standards? (i will be doing second year of Uni this year)

Thanks

Most of the undergraduate Dental schools accept non-standards e.g. UQ, Griffith, CSU, James Cook, Adelaide, La Trobe.

Am about to start my first year of Griffith Dent, and have already seen that there are a few New Zealanders coming across for it :)

All undergraduate dental schools accept non-standards, the cut-off scores have changed but the procedures have not:

hey guys
just a question in regards to Satisfactory and unsatisfactory units which dosent give you a mark. for instance someone completing the first year of nursing which contains 2 or 3 units that have S/U grading.if someone gets a gpa of 7 from the first yr at nursing, wondering how they will be assessed by Griffit uni or QTAC.
