JCU states:

If you are considering undertaking a Chemistry bridging subject, please view our list of alternative options and criteria below.

Chemistry
  • JCU's CH1020 Preparatory Chemistry - can be studied under the Diploma of Higher Education (Pathway program).
  • Completion of both CHEM40079 & CHEM11042 at CQU will satisfy the Chemistry pre-req (must pass both subjects) in order to meet our Chemistry requirements for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science or;
  • Any two bridging/tertiary level chemistry subjects or;
  • Any single bridging/tertiary level subject provided that it contains a minimum of 18 hours lab work (must also contain organic chemistry).
Should you find alternative Chemistry bridging subject elsewhere, please contact our Admissions team ([email protected]) prior to enrolling, to ensure it will satisfy our Chemistry subject prerequisites for entry into Medicine.

I just wanted to look for a bridging course that was more local and easier for me (thats why I was looking for the 18 hours lab work)

Yes the CH1020 Preparatory Chemistry is acceptable by itself, there is no need to study the Diploma as well, however, you can if you want. JCU just replied to my email regarding this.

Thanks for the feedback. So JCU accepts its own course with 12 lab hours but do it somewhere else they require 18 hours. That's quite discriminative isn't it?

Guess you could say so :)

I guess the chem course they offer is tailored to what they want from MBBS students. I guess they just dont trust other bridging courses as much as their own.

In the application form for the prep course, I can't select study period 1, which is the earlier date. Would it be okay to choose study period 2?

I think you have to choose Period 3 (if that's possible) to do in Jan-Feb 2020, completing it before med starts.

Or you could say, if you were cynical (like me), that they are trying to inflate the relevance of an otherwise probably not very popular course! JCU is a long way to go for a bridging course, after all (as you and I are both evidence of! I did the UTAS course and just wrote JCU off altogether rather than attend their course!).

Thats the thing. Only period 1 and 2 are options, I just put Period 2. I emailed them to double check though. Wanna make sure its okay.

Very very true ahaha. I enrolled in the UTAS bridging course too, however, unfortunately, JCU doesn't accept UTAS' course so i'm left with applying for JCU's course :(

Hopefully I'm wrong but I'm afraid if you can only enrol for Period 2 (or even 1) you will have a hard time convincing QTAC that you meet the prereqs to be eligible for an interview invite or place offer.

Yeah, I tend to agree. When I asked a couple of years ago it was made clear to me I had to be enrolled in the period 3 unit to be considered (or equivalent if I was attending a different bridging course). I’d definitely be getting them to confirm exactly what they want.

Honestly every time an email comes you check your email this time like .... Check your email like Western Sydney Admissions mini heart attack you start reading .... we will contact you by the end of October. What a bait honestly
