General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

It's a strange situation. 2-4 years ago it was 99.75-99.80 for Griffith Med, 99.5-99.6 for Dent.

But recently there have been a lot more non-standard applicants for Dent resulting in cutoff around 6.85 GPA, which apparently is equiv to 99.80. At the same time Med cutoff dropped to 99.6-99.7 so most school leavers with 99.80 enough for Dent chose Med instead.
Reason for ATAR reduction from the grapevine: Griffith took a lot more students to make up for reduced intake in other health fields this year due to smaller Qld cohort. In fact, I heard there are over 100 students in Gold Coast itself and 60 or so in Nathan (combined total is typically under 100 in previous years). This reduced the ATAR. This is temporary and will go back to >99.75 in subsequent years. Yes, they will have to reduce GEMS intake by similar number in 2022 for this reason.

Adding onto this, the 93rd percentile is relative to other users of the prep platform (more motivated than the average UCAT test-taker), so if you were to pull off this kind of performance in the real exam, your actual percentile would likely be much higher! You're going great noodleboy123 :D
Oh wow thank you! I am happy to know that I have somewhat of a chance at med ^.^

Can you give me a approximate chance (percentage) of me getting an interview for these unis with a high 98 low 99 ATAR? And a UCAT of about 95th percentile...
I am from VIC.

Monash (MG & SEAS)
UAdel med
UAdel dent
UQ med
JMP med
CSU dent
Bond med (I hear this is Full fee so really expensive...)

Assuming your UCAT is indeed 95th percentile, you're going to get an interview for all of them!

Don't forget UQ dent ;), for which your ucat would be plenty, but unless you get a 99 atar or above then you wouldn't gain entry to

Also good time to mention 2 bonus points for Maths C equivalent and a LOTE

Hi guys,

I am trying to gain entrance into Medicine. I have an interest in research and my thinking is that if i can show some involvement in research prior to starting medical school, it will increase my chances of getting into medicine.
Though I am having difficulty finding out how i can get involved. Any tips/suggestions of how i could go about this? I am currently studying a bachelor degree in medical radiation science and i have tried to contact my course coordinators regarding opportunities but havent had any luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

Can you explain your thought process a little more? If you want to get into research because you’re genuinely interested in research - great. If you want to get into research because it’ll help get you into medicine - it probably won’t help much, or at least, it’s a difficult way to go about it. It could help with your portfolio at a couple of grad entry schools, but so can lots of other activities.

I think research in your portfolio is more a concern for American med schools!

Hi Guys.

I wanted some advice about possibility of getting into Med.I migrated to Australia and now I’m a citizen. I did my undergrad in India. It was assessed by UAC- GPA-5.4. QTAC score – 96%.

Now Im working as a Physio in Australia. I worked in the rural, region Vic for 5 years before moving to metro.

I can’t give the GAMSAT (uni was completed 10 years ago). Do I stand a chance of getting in with decent UKAT score?

What scores would I need in UKAT to get an interview?

JCU- Where do I mention in my application that I worked in rural for 5 years as a physio.

Looking forward to some advice.

As things currently stand, you’d probably only be competitive at JMP (with a UCAT around 90%ile plus). You’d be eligible to apply more widely (JCU, Curtin, Bond, UNSW), but your GPA is likely too low. And I think WSU requires GPA 5.5 for completed degree so you just miss out there, too.

I know you’ve said your undergrad was 10+ years ago, but have you done anything at all since? Such as a Grad Dip or Honours?

Hi again,
What about applying under the Rural Entry Scheme for JMP, WSU , UNSW and the new med program at Orange.
Do i stand a chance.
Regards

have you lived rurally in Australia for 5+ years consecutively or 10+ cumulatively? If so, that will certainly help.

Yes i have worked for 5 years as a physio

RRMA (1991)- Rural Zone, Code 5- Worked for 4 years.

RRMA (1991)-Rural Zone, Code 4 – Worked for 1 year

Did you do all those years one after the other? Or were they broken up? And it's not enough to just have worked somewhere, you have to have lived in that location (I'm assuming you lived near where you worked, but it's a necessary clarification).
