General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

Hi,
Does anyone have info about Uni Melbourne full fee paying medical program? Does it apply to school leavers or it's a postgrad entry? Is it too late to add that to my VTAC application now or do we need to select that choice later in January , similar to Bond?

As far as I’m aware the full fee spots are made available to those who are eligible for the 99+ ATAR “guaranteed” pathway which means that you get the option to apply for a full fee spot near the end of the second year of your undergrad on the basis of maintaining a WAM above 75% (no GAMSAT required). These applications happen during the undergrad degree so you don’t need to worry about changing anything with your preferences. Also, even though it’s called a “guaranteed entry scheme” you would still need to sit the MMI.

Just adding to medchic's response, you just enroll in any of UniMelb's degrees and you will be automatically listed in their internal system that you are a part of their guaranteed system

Are we required to use a preference slot in the VTAC application for a UMelb Bachelor course?
For the guaranteed pathway you would need to be accepted into a Umelb undergrad so definitely put Umelb in your preference list :)

Also another thing to note is that in order to be eligible for the guaranteed pathway, the undergrad degree must be commenced immediately after year 12 so if you took a gap year and only then applied for a Umelb undergrad you would not be eligible for guaranteed scheme even if you got an atar of 99+

That was very helpful medchic, thanks a lot. So to summarise: school leaver with minimum ATAR of 99% could apply for ANY undergrad bachelor degree at Uni Melb such as nursing and if WAM>75% is achieved , will be invited for FFP agreement to enter medical course , subject to passing an MMI by end of year 2 . Is that right?

Glad I could help, Nostradamus! Yep that’s right- although not entirely sure of the timeline of whether the FFP offer is made in 3rd year or 2nd year of the course. I think you get offered the pathway end if 2nd year and probably do the interview in 3rd year.

Thank you very much.

Hi, just wanted some advice for UNSW my med application. I have already applied as a gateway applicant and graduated last year with a 99.85 and UCAT of 91%ile this year. Would it be more likely for me to get a gateway offer since there are only around 10 places, or should I revert my application to a standard application since there are more places. Bit confused if gateway would actually help me here or not since I already meet the atar requirement and also have EAS bonus points without gateway.

Depends...are you a gap year student? I would assume so, since if you started a uni degree you cannot apply via this pathway.

Personally I would apply as a gateway applicant, because even if there are less places, you'll be heaps more competitive because of your ATAR and UCAT, so you would actually have a higher chance.

As opposed to applying via standard entry, your UCAT would be on the lower end of the cohort, so it's actually gonna be harder to get a spot. If you get an interview via the Gateway scheme, you're probably in the ~30 or so kids invited (this is just an estimate). So less people will be shortlisted for this pathway.

Considering your raw ATAR, also apply to Griffith University for Medicine! I think you'll get a spot there.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: I think it would be too late to change anyways...

Yep Im on a gap year. Thanks for the advice, definitely applying to griffith as well. I applied everywhere except for the uwa assured pathway and monash - would just prefer NSW so I don't have to move interstate.

I already submitted my application but UNSW said I'm ineligible even though I satisfy all the criteria for gateway. I'm just emailing them to see if there was a mistake or not so I was just asking to see if I should go ahead with trying to revert my application back to gateway. By the looks of it seems like I should. Thanks for the help once again!

Yep! I definitely think Griffith is something you should aim for since your raw ATAR should make the cut, and I don’t think there is any interview for it.

That’s indeed peculiar. If you met the requirements you should have qualified. How did you know you did not qualify? Did you receive an email from UNSW saying you were not eligible?

Since you are a gap year student, you’ve already checked both the first and fourth requirements for the scheme.

Note, UNSW states you must be in BOTH 25% lowest SES AND in a Gateway school. If you only satisfy one, you won’t be eligible.

However, if you truly fit all the criteria then yes, you would qualify and you should email UNSW medicine admissions team about it. (It is the email on the UNSW MAP).

Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions!

Yes UNSW emailed me saying I was ineligible, but I do satisfy all the criteria. So I emailed them to ask why and they said I didnt attend a gateway school even though my school is on the gateway school list. Then they said they will double check and get back to me and later changed their reason because they said I have begun tertiary studies already.

It's a bit of a weird case, because I made the decision to take a gap year quite suddenly and was alredy enrolled at UNSW and unenrolled on the day uni had started which was still before the census date. I called UAC and they said I still have to declare my enrolment even though I am on a gap year which is probably why they rejected me :( I'll email them one last time to see if they can reconsider my application but it seems like I'll be put into the standard applicant pool.

Yes, you should email them and explain the situation (make sure include specific dates and maybe screenshots to confirm you're not in tertiary study yet), there's a massive advantage on your end if you do qualify.

I think the system might register enrolls, but maybe not unenrolling (a fault on their part). So you might be tagged as enrolled, since you accepted whatever offer you already got.

However, it probably means you'll need to do really well on the interview if you don't get the Gateway Entry scheme. Regardless, I think Griffith Medicine is still highly available to you so I won't stress too much. All the best!

Hello Guys, I was wondering what is the general ATAR required for a bachelor of biomedical science or health science for Queensland is? Thanks!!

Advice needed on whether MD program is more demanding in turn of courses to studies/exams. Will MD repeats the bachelor courses study/exam routines in Year 1 and Year 2 or it is more meaningful medical and clinical courses.
