General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

Just for some interstate unis like Curtin, UQ, etc, how much higher will the cutoffs be for an applicant from NSW
I don't think UQ has a higher cutoff for interstate applicants. Curtin does but there isn't enough posted data to work out how much higher.

Also for CQU's pathway program, do they take any interstate applications, or are these spots designated to QLD students only?
I'm fairly sure CQU takes interstate applications. As I recall, last year a NZ-student applicant (considered equiv to interstate) with above-cutoff marks didn't get an invite. When asked CQU said NZ students got lower priority, but later backed down as being wrong and issued an invite.

yes, cqu does take interstate applicants as there are a few interstate students in our cohort

what would the cutoff be for the cqu program?
its a bit hard to answer this question since last yr was the firs time the program was introduced, so not many ppl applied, since newer programs arent very known, and local qlders to recieve preference (regional qlders > regular metro qlders > interstates), so its hard to give an accurate cut off score, im assuming 3000+ would be an estimated score for interstate, since some of us got under 3000 (which im assuming is due to local qld score), whilst some of us who were interstate did have to have a much higher ucat... so just be careful how you select your preferences for qtac

Thanks for your help. I'm not in year 12 yet just finishing up the last term of year 11 so still, some time to go I guess.

Hi Everyone,

I recently just did my UCAT and didn't do well enough I think to apply as a non-standard applicant for the JPM/JMP (I've completed a bachelor's and about to finish my graduate diploma this year). However I was considering giving JCU a shot and applying, however does anyone know how they assess the GPA for tertiary qualification? My GPA wasn't the great in my bachelor's (credit average), but at the moment I'm sitting on a 6.2 GPA. I wanted to know what the cut-off is like and what qualification they look at, whether it's only the most recent like the JPM and JMP or all of them. I don't even know if a 6.2 is good enough, because if it's not I'd rather just apply next year when I transition into my Master's and resit UCAT as well.

Any advice would be wonderful :)

There’s no cut-off GPA for JCU. The main component is the written application and, historically, this can compensate somewhat for a low 6s GPA if it’s absolutely outstanding (by whatever metric JCU use), however last year we had scant data with only a single 7.00 GPA student reporting an interview invite. It’s therefore impossible to say. Though I’d imagine a 6.2 would be at the lower end of competitive for a non-rural applicant.

What is the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) in la trobe ? It says guaranteed entry to Doctor of Medicine in University of Melbourne after completing the course , does it mean that no interview is required after completing the course?

But how is it possible to have a "guaranteed" entry ? Even provisional entry required interview

Iirc this pathway^ is only for rural applicants.
Selection is 30% ATAR 70% MMI so there won't be another interview before commencing UMelb MD.

(Since you mentioned provisional, provisional offers at other unis have passed through an interview except UMelb Chancellor's).

Hi guys, I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, but when I was filling out the UNSW Application I found that I had to preference all the campuses (Kensington, Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga) and that there wasn't any opportunity to 'opt out' of any of them. Has this always been the case? I was just wondering because it's a bit of a risk preferencing UNSW first with the hopes of either Kensington/Port Macq, then potentially getting UNSW Wagga Wagga (which I would have to move out for) and missing out on a WSU offer. Anyone know how it's worked in previous years? Thank you so much!

This is a problem every year and there is no way around it that has been devised to date. The problem is further complicated by JMP asking students to do the same (a single UAC entry but three campus options).

Adding to LMG's reply, this^ can be even worse if you end up getting Wagga Bonded while being *unknowingly* deprived of WSU Unbonded.

Otoh if you were given the option to omit Wagga off UNSW then end up qualified for Wagga and not WSU, you get no offer at all.

For 2-3 years MSO members have asked UAC to provide a solution for this, but every time UAC gave the we-dont-care treatment saying nothing UAC can do. (Of course there are ways UAC can help if they truly care).

Thanks for the advice, guess all anyone can do is try their best ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi everyone, I just found out something called STAT. I have never heard about it before but it seemed to be an alternative of ATAR. If I get a 98 ATAR, can I try the STAT to boost my ATAR to be more competitive in applying medicine ? Seems like some university like the university of Adelaide's medicine will consider the STAT and seems like even for a year 12 student, s/he can take the STAT.

It sounds like STAT is much better than taking a gap year but if this is the case, then why haven't I ever heard about it before ? eg. in mana's common pitfall

STAT is meant for mature-aged applicants who don't have a usable ATAR. Of the STAT-to-ATAR conversions I've seen they are for not-so-competitive degrees requiring like 80-85 ATAR. Have you found out what STAT score you'd need to be better than your 98 ATAR?

Anyone know if USQ, CQU and UQ's provisional entry to medicine program is the same thing or not ?
I have done some research and their minimum ATAR are same. Does it mean that even if I applied to all three programs, my odds of getting into medicine won't increase ?
If I applied all campus location in CQU will I have a greater chance of getting in ?
