General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

Hi everyone, this is my first post on MSO and I was a bit confused about where I am supposed to post, so sorry in advance if this is the wrong spot! I was just wondering if anyone would know which universities preferentially select their own students for graduate medicine spots in Australia (not including provisional 'guaranteed' entry programs). For example I know Flinders Uni has a lower GAMSAT score cut off for invitation to interview if you are a Flinders student which gives Flinders students an advantage when applying. Are there any other universities that give an advantage to their own students? Thanks in advance! :)

For graduate-entry schools see this post

(By the way Flinders doesn't "have" a lower GAMSAT cut off, they allocate more places to Flinders students so relative to number of applicants it results in a lower cutoff).

A few undergrad schools UNSW, Adelaide, Curtin have an internal transfer pathway for their own students but these are not applicable to you.

I also called usyd and they said SAT is only available for international students.
This^ contradicts an earlier post about SAT in which the OP said USyd accepted their SAT converted to 99.95 and invited them to an interview.

Whereas I had a doubt whether UNSW accepts SAT. UNSW webpages only mention SAT for international students. For domestic specifically only ATAR or IB or A-Levels. Your post has turned the whole picture upside down.

Yeah for UNSW I called them twice actually and they basically said your SAT can’t overcome a ATAR below 96.

I think the lady for usyd seemed a bit unsure herself however, as she was talking ab gamsat and seemed a bit confused. I may call them again to double check.

This may have all changed since last year tho, which explains why OP got a int? Because I know people that have used the SAT with lower ATARs get interviews so honestly idk.

Hi guys,

Quick question: I know WSU doesn't take current med students through their undergrad application system but does anyone know if the same applies to UoN (JMP)?

Iirc JMP does not have such exclusion. Probably not needed to since it's kinda unusual for someone who has completed 1-2 years CSP Med elsewhere then seeks to relocate to Newcastle to restart first year.

just to clarify, for WSU the moment we enrol to another MD course, we lose eligibility correct? (i.e. if we have done <1FTE would we still fall under the exclusion)

hi everyone, at the moment my predicted atar is looking like a 99.2 and I'm wondering if it is at all possible that i would be eligible for an offer from Griffith med with my EAS? I am eligible under the home environment and responsibilities category (caring for/serious illness of immediate family member) so is there a chance at all that my atar could be boosted to a 99.85? Thanks!

You can enrol but then withdraw before 1st semester census date, you won't be counted as a student.
If you stay enrolled after census date, you are a student even if you have done <1FTE.

Note that some MD courses (particularly the provisional offers) don't count their first-year as med students. As such they are not excluded from applying to WSU/UNSW.

Unfortunately I don't think so since Griffith Med does not give EAS adjustments.
(Someone please correct me if Griffith has recently changed).

So complete transparency, I'm starting Bond Medicine in September. I'm GWS and just recieved a UCAT of 3090 (WSU score of 751.2). Bond medicine is divided into 2 separate courses (bachelor of medical stds, doctor of medicine) so would I be considered an MD student if I have just started?

Bond seems to fall into a grey area. To me Bond's course is the same type as UNSW / Monash / JMP [BMedxx + MD], which is two *sequential* degrees and first-year BMedxx are considered med students. Yet I remember reading on MSO Bond 1st/2nd year can apply to WSU. Best you ask WSU directly for a reply in writing to be sure.

When you call WSU ask to speak to WSU Med specifically, not General Admissions.

For WSU/CSU Med, does choosing CSU's Orange campus over WSU's Campbelltown campus increase the chances of getting a place? If I choose Campbelltown, but I don't get a place there, would I still be able to receive an offer for Orange - and do they prioritise applicants who chose Orange? Thanks!

Theoretically there's no difference, but we don't know if WSU/CSU do anything untheoretical.

On probability though, since Campbelltown places are like 90% non-rural 10% rural whereas Orange only 7-8 places non-rural, I think it's safer to preference Campbelltown for non-rural and vice versa.

Okay, thank you so much!

Hi guys Based on my last year's experience on QTAC preferences If you have UCAT > 2900, non-rural, ATAR > 99 adjusted.
  1. JUC Townsville
  2. JCU Cairns
  3. UQ medicine unbonded - This year UQ allows 50% of interview spots to QLD. Cut-off will reduce dramatically, could be 3000
  4. USQ medicine unbonded (in 2024 intake is 40 students!!)
  5. CQ Rockhampton unbonded
  6. CQ Bundaberg bonded
Do not worry about Griffith or Sunshine Coast as you can apply to these universities after ATAR release by removing one or two from the original preferences if you did not receive interview officers i.e from JCU
This is a guidance only make changes as per your preferences

Hi Guys,
First post, so don't know if I am on the right Page. Thanks to all the contributors and good advice so far. Just wondering if there are any med students or current ATAR students who are suffering with ADHD? and if so how are you coping/coped to get thru year 12? I really want to study medicine but seems like trying to climb a steep hill with lots of support but no motivation.

I’ll be able to let these forums know then. I received an assessment from UAC that a 15XX SAT converted to a 99.75. I also scored an exorbitantly high UCAT this year, so whether I get an interview should confirm the feasibility of this pathway.

I sent USYD an email and they said that they will not accept it if u are a domestic student, however you can sit the SAT and apply as an international, thus making you have to pay upfront which IMO is not worth it. For UNSW they don't clearly mention if you can or cannot use it but a friend of mine tried this and told me if your original atar was less than 96, you have no shot of getting an interview even if u get a 1600 in the SAT so take that as it is. I think they patched it for USYD but UNSW is well worth a shot, let us know what happens

This does not sound right. You can't charge domestic students international fee's. Is this what they said directly?

It was on a phone call and it was something along the lines of how if you apply via the SAT you will undergo the international process and have to pay upfront. Mind you I was on a call for 48 minutes and was set back and forth to over 7 different people so I don't think they know much about it as they all had various answers, bu the most common one was for USYD at least that they can see your ATAR and if you are a domestic student the ATAR will be shown first before the equivalent SAT score.
I would recommend calling them and asking them in more detail but they honestly don't know themselves I think and they will most likely keep referring you onto someone else.
