General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

Is anyone's JMP application not working? After the "rural or standard" page it comes up with an error page for me. It's very early but would like to hear from others
Admissions team responded via email:

Hello,
We are aware of the issue and are investigating. Please try again at the end of next week.

A1 adds: Wot?!! They make you solve 180 UCAT problems in 2 hours and they gonna take a week to solve *one* problem. 🤣

Does anyone know if there is a difference in requirements for WSU and Charles Sturt for interstate students?

___________
A1 replies: If WSU & CSU work as intended for a Joint Program there should be no difference in requirements.
WSU says its interview quota is divided into 50%GSW, 30%NSW, 20% interstate. CSU says 80% rural, 20% non-rural.
But we don't know for certain - if one misses the place-offer cutoff at WSU but meets CSU's cutoff (or vice versa), whether they will be allocated to the other school.

Couple of med schools have a 2-year validity for ATAR, like Monash and one other school I don't remember which (maybe UQ?).

If you have or will start uni you'll be a non-standard applicant. None of the schools accepting non-standards imposes a validity period.
It's just not used after you have completed 1+ year uni (for JMP) or completed a degree (for UNSW & WSU).
Hi A1,
Could I confirm that if I've done half a year of uni, I shouldn't complete the other half or my ATAR won't be in consideration for JMP for the 2027 intake?
Thanks so much.

___________
A1 replies: Very simple, JMP doesn't recognise a GPA of less than 1 year uni study. Without a GPA they necessarily use ATAR (94.5+ req'd).
With 1+ year uni they will only use the GPA, 4.8+ req'd. You only shouldn't complete the other half year if you fear not getting 4.8+.
(Note that with 1+ year JMP only uses GPA, whereas UNSW/WSU use 'best of' GPA & ATAR).

Hey I got 750 VR 760 DM 690 QR. idk how I fucked up QR that badly cos I’ve consistently got over 800 and I walked out thinking I got full marks but anyways. I’m GWS is there absolutely any hope in getting an interview or should I just forget about it so I don’t waste my time preparing?

___________
A1 replies: Sorry to hear of the unexpected outcome.
Your WSU-weighted 740 is ~20 marks lower than the cutoff for GWS interview last year. Not promising but still worth a try I think.

Btw I believe you're an Actuary student, and I've seen quite many full marks 900QR on MSO. That makes your 690QR very sus. I suggest you write/email to request Pearson(?) investigate if something was wrong with their system.

yeahh i seriously dk because ive consistenly gotten over 800 for every single mock that ive done and ive gotten full marks multiple times. i thought that even if i flop the other two im defs getting 850+ for QR thats how confident i was/how easy i thought. since its a computerised system i doubt its inaccurate maybe i was just rushing too much idkk.

Hello A1,

I’m a non-standard Sydney student gunning for UNSW. 2340 UCAT, 99.70 ATAR with EAS (not included in raw ATAR). How likely am I for an interview, and if so, how likely is a place?

___________
A1 replies: 99.70+2340 should definitely get you UNSW interview.
Both your ATAR & UCAT are kinda average among the interview cohort, I'd rate you 30% place-offer chance without EAS. I don't know how much EAS will help improve but as a guess, maybe 50% chance?

I’m pretty sure EAS pushes it to 99.95. Does that change anything? Thank you for the realistic estimate

___________
A1 replies: Does that change anything? It's why I raised it from 30% to 50% :)
A rough explanation is if all UNSW interviewees are average on ATAR/UCAT with each other, they all have 30% chance each (being one-in-three place/interview ratio). If ATAR is raised from 99.70 to 99.95 the 30% chance improves to 50%.

If I was to get EAS (medical) for UNSW, do you think a 98.95 ATAR could push up to 99.95?

___________
A1 replies: According to this UAC webpage under Selection rank adjustments
> Educational Access Schemes
1 adjustment point is worth 1.0 ATAR rank. If you get EAS I don't think they'll give you less than 1 point so yes, 98.95 would be boosted to 99.95.

Hi all, just had a question about MySydney entry.
I received an email from USyd on my school (education) email, not the one that I've used to apply on UAC, on June 17 saying "Congratulations — looks like you’re eligible for our MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme." However, later in the email, they go on to say "Once you have a University of Sydney course as one of your UAC preferences, we’ll notify you if you’re eligible for the MySydney Scheme within a few weeks, no application required. You can check the notification dates on our website."
I submitted a UAC application with USyd as one of my preferences on July 18, and they emailed me to confirm "Thank you for preferencing us". The notification dates have passed yet I haven't received any email from them. So now I'm not sure whether or not I'm actually eligible since they initially said I am but also haven't been notified me since? If anyone could please help me understand what I need to do or what any of this means, I would be very grateful, thank you.

Application glitches always seem to happen right when you’re trying to get ahead of the queue. Sometimes all you can do is wait for them to fix it.

Hi I just wanted some advice. Context- I'm a first year biomed student with an expected gpa of 6.75 and got a 2240 on the ucat (which I believe is quite below the cutoff for all non standard schools). I should also mention that I want to practice medicine in the states after my degree as all my close family has since moved there. As a result, I have gotten a good opportunity into study medicine abroad but the course would start in mid January or August (for the second intake). But for the 2026 intake, I would still chose to study med in Australia as It would be significantly cheaper.

Finally, my question is should I apply to the Jan intake considering my stats aren't competitive enough for AUS med schools or should I wait it out till august, banking on the chance that I get a second round interview? I prefer the August way less as Its structure only gives you a 2 week breathing window to prepare for the USMLE exams (US residency exams) Sorry for the mumbled message. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone I think I have completely confused myself and have read all the med school websites and I don't remember what I read where. I am hoping someone can help me clarify. I am a non rural applicant.
1. Does UNSW , JMP and West Syd (non-GWS)- prefer NSW over interstate for interviews and do they prefer locals for offers?
Is QLD considered local in these schools. A family friend was living in QLD and was considered local for interviews at JMP.
2. Does JCU prefer QLD res over interstate for non rural?

Grateful to anyone able to clear up my confusion.

1. I don’t believe so for UNSW or JMP but this is such a rapidly changing area, so it may have changed. JPM (WSU and CSU) yes.
1a. No, living in Qld is not considered local. JMP used to consider Qld applicants ‘local’ for allocation to UNE for interview location (as opposed to UoN) when they were held in person, but NOT for receiving an interview invite in the first place, or for receiving an offer.
2. No one knows what JCU prefer beyond rural status. There admissions process is really unclear.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP MEE sorry in advance this is a very long paragraph, I am a first-year uni healthsci student studying in nz and I wasn't offered a mmi interview because the GPA cut offs this year were significantly high - I got a 8.25GPA only from sem 1, but even more unfortunate I also did terrible in my UCAT this year got 2050 excluding SJT

and I really can't see myself doing hlthscience for the next two years and then reapplying here because of the likelihood of getting in but I am kinda confused if I should complete my undergrad here and apply for post grad med or if I should go and do undergrad in aus and apply for postgrad med there - I applied to au last year too but only melbourne but this time I want to apply to a 'good' premed undergrad program (sorry I have heard bad things about biomed at unimelb) in hopes of getting into med at aus. I heard monash has a special scheme for biomed undergrads reserving 70 spots for post grad med? Please let me know if there are other au unis that have these 'special schemes' I am also open to any advice on choosing pathways or if anyone knows any undergrad research programs/ internships I could apply for. Also tbh I wanted to do dentistry initially but we only have one uni out of the two in nz that has a dentistry degree so I wanted to look at dentistry options in au but I am aware there are none that doesn't look at ucat

Hey everyone! Just a question as a current FY BHealthsci student at uoa - my predicted GPA for the end of this year will be between 7.75 and 8.25. I currently have a UCAT of 2250, and I'm not sure if it matters but my ATAR from high school is about 98 (A*AB). Do you think I have a shot at any med unis in Aus? Just trying to get a better idea of my chances :) Thank you!

Hey! I'm lowk in the same position.Do you have any updates on potential next steps? This years cohort is sooo tough

Hey guys, I've already posted this before, but I wasn't given any responses

Stats:
  • ATAR: No predicted, but aiming for 90+
  • EAS: Eligible but idk which unis
  • Location: Rural (MM3)
  • Preferences: Applying to JMP, CSU/WSU med, UNSW med, UTAS, UADEL med, LaTrobe/UniMelb med, and UQ provisional med
  • (i'm aiming for JMP tho, cus its close to home and im eligible for the rural community entry list for hunter new england/ central coast/midnorth coast) (if there's any unis that im missing, except jcu and monash (no chem prereq), please tell me)
  1. Also, even with the entry schemes, would my %ile be enough for jmp?
  2. Hb my ATAR, im aiming 90+, but im not sure i can with internals (still trying regardless)
  3. How does EAS work for med cus I'm eligible for two categories, and just wanting to know how this affects my ATAR requirement/selection rank and also, which unis take EAS into account?
any advice or help would be welcomed

___________
A1 replies: 69%ile should get rural-entry interviews from several schools including JMP, but you need to meet their ATAR thresholds.
Iirc JMP 91.5, UNSW 93.0, WSU 93.5 etc Check the schools' websites for their minimum ATAR for rural category.
Rural sees much lower cutoffs than EAS, but if you are eligible for both no harm to apply for both.
