Griffith Griffith Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

Hey everyone, I have a full time year all HDs so assuming gpa 7 but just wondering since I'm from Monash would my HDs that are below 85 be converted to a distinction when applying for Griffith. How would this effect my gpa.

If your academic transcript only records the overall grade (i.e. HD) for each subject then you will be fine. If it records the values (e.g. 83) then this may be a different story and the GPA may be recalculated.

Hi all, long time lurker first time poster.
Decided to go back to uni (griffith biochem) after a few years of full time work.
Managed to achieve a GPA of 7 for first year of full time study (80CP)
My GPA from my previous degree (QUT) wasn't competitive enough, will that affect my chances of getting into griffith dent?

I think (from reading back through this thread) that they'll use your GPA 7.00 and only move to your previous degree GPA if they need a tie-breaker (which they are very unlikely to for a 7.00).

Just out of curiosity, does rural priority application still make difference if student already received a year of a GPA of 7?

Given GPA is the only factor used to determine entry eligibility (no interview, UCAT, rurality ranking), then I'd imagine no as nothing can be 'boosted' with a total GPA of 7.00.

LMG is correct. If you've completed 80CP then they'll only look at the GPA from your most recent degree. Good luck!

Yep, you can call QTAC when grades are finalised to confirm your ranking as well. They should give you a different ranking for your newest degree and one for your old degree - the highest of which would be used.

Will the QTAC GPA calculation be consistent with Griffith's? I ask because it's generally a bit nebulous as to whether they'll grade over 80 as a HD, or over 85; seems to vary considerably with how the University presents its academic transcript.

It's looking like I'll finish my first year of Health Sciences with HDs in all 8 of my subjects, but may only have over 85 in 7 of them (one of my subjects may fall between 80-84). Incidentally I'm a bit anxious as to whether I'll have a 7 or a 6.875.

Don't worry a 6.875 has historically been enough to get in so either way it doesn't matter.

Hey MrWhippe, from memory, I think QTAC uses the GPA based on what's written on your transcript. Eg, if your university sees 80 as a 7, so will QTAC. This is different to GEMSAS which will scale it down.

6.875 should be sufficient to gain entry either way so just keep focusing on those end of semesters! Best of luck. :)

Thanks for the reply you two! Haha, ofc, tho I'd rather a 7 just so that I can say to with 99% confidence I'll get in, and that I won't be waiting until ~Jan 15 for confirmation.

GEMSAS? Is that graduate entry? Tangential, but will the other consortiums (e.g. UAC, SATAC, VTAC) also view straight HDs as a 7, even if they fall below 85, in the same way as QTAC?

Yeah, GEMSAS is graduate med entry. A1 - can you please confirm for the other TAC's re: GPA calculations?

Do the courses/units you take during your first year of full-time study matter?
I did 2 non-science related courses, one of which is from a first year free choice elective and the second is from swapping one of my first year planned course with a second year free choice elective.

We know with high certainty that UAC & QTAC *by default* will use the grade code on your transcript so a HD is a HD/7 regardless whether from a 80+ or 85+ uni. By default means unless they are instructed to do differently by a uni for that uni, hopefully Griffith does not.

We haven't paid much attention to how the other TACs do, since the large majority of non-standards apply through UAC or QTAC.

Hi everyone,
I have just completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Honours degree in New Zealand. I ended up getting an 83% in my Honours. My university clearly regards this as a first class honours degree on the academic transcript. I've been reading this thread and have seen conflicting evidence regarding whether an 83% will still be equivalent to a GPA of 7 for Griffith entrance? i.e. do I still have a good chance of getting an offer in January?
