Griffith Griffith Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

oh completely forgot about the costs, yeah that definitely makes sense! will definitely be trying to get as many credits as possible.

One last question, I noticed that subjects only say trimester 1 and 2, does that mean we get the entire 3rd trimester off? that's quite a lengthy holiday

Definitely apply for credits. I'm not sure how it works at Griffith, but at UTAS the course content needs to overlap by at least 70% to be eligible for RPL though, just an FYI.

Hi
Does anyone know the ATAR cut-off for interstate school-leaver students applying for Griffiths Dental Health Science? I have satisfied all the entry requirements but I'm not sure if my ATAR is high enough to get in. It says 99.65 on the website but only for NSW kids.
If anyone who is doing this course or knows about someone who got in etc, their thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

That cut-off sounds about right, given you need to compete with non-standard students as well. From memory it teeters around the 99.5-99.65 mark each year. The cut-off is the same for all Australian school-leavers - Griffith doesn't discriminate against interstate students.

Hi Crow or anyone else,
Do u happen to know what the ATAR cutoff for rural people is when applying to Griffiths dent and med program? Like do we get any bonus points applied? Because they encouraged rural people to apply through the GURPAS form or whatever its called so I did but I'm not sure if that would lower the cut off for me? Also considering ATAR seems to be the only criteria, and I can't find this information anywhere. Thanks a lot

It doesn't seem you get bonus points applied to then compete in the general pool, rather it seems there is a seperate quota for rural applicants whereby you're only competing against each other. It's also not clear if all rurality claims are treated equally (ie. RA2 is the same as RA5). The terminology states there are "places set aside" for GURPAS applicants, but I can't see how many. I shall have a quick look at last year's data to see if we had anyone reporting rural offers (but off the top of my head, I don't recall any).

ETA: Nope, there were none reported here, sorry.

Aaah thank you anyway LMG! . I literally cannot find this info anywhere and i don't know what the chances are of getting into Griffith as a rural applicant tbh now. It seems that they only give places to 99+ atars :(

Hello,
Can anyone advise me if Griffith has released early offers for dentistry? I spoke to QTAC this morning and they said I was not qualified for the offer in this round so I did not receive it.
Also my status showing Pending from QTAC, it reads QTAC yet to determine my eligibility ( however when I clicked the dropped down, it say I meet age, English and assumed knowledge requirements )

Not sure l if I am still competitive enough. Have 6.5 GPA for my Medical science and 7 GPA for first year full time studies ( 2018).
Not sure if I will be still receiving offer from Griffith? Up to today I had very high hopes for Griffith. Not sure now.

Griffith doesn't make early round offers. If you go into your QTAC, next to your preferences, it shows that the offer round is on 16 January 2019. No one has so far received any offers from Griffith. As I have said previously, I'd take anything QTAC says with a grain of salt given that med and dent admissions are unique to other degrees.

Given that you have a 7 GPA from a full year of study, that should secure an offer on 16 Jan.

Thank you for your comforting message. I really appreciate that.
Just get nervous about the outcome.
It’s been 4 years I am trying to get an offer. So at times get worried easily.

Nirav1985 - you're over thinking it! I'm sure that both you and mzho will get offers on 16 Jan!
Thank you my friend .

Did you apply anywhere else Nirav1985?
I did actually at Charles Sturt. Did not get offer for 6th December round.in my honest opinion I prefer Griffith over CSU, just couple of positive factors for CSU is its fees affordable and close to Sydney.
Otherwise I always loved Griffith. I m hopping to get maximum credit in Griffith plus it’s curri looks more attractive to me.
How about you?
I am affraid to attempt UMAT and GAMSAT, so had only limited options.

Didn't you have to do UMAT for CSU? I applied for CSU too but didn't get an offer for 6th Dec. My first preferences would prob be Adelaide Uni but I'm not sure how I did for the interview. Also I think I'll get into UQ. Griffith is kinda my last preference just because of full fee. Unfortunately, I've used up most of my full fee allowance during my undergrad years so I'd have to fork out the money which will be hard. That being said, if money was no concern, then I'd go for Griffith and Gold Coast any day.

Unfortunately I don't have any info on this either, nor do I know anyone personally that went through the rural pathway for dentistry. However, I suspect the cut-off for rural applicants isn't really much lower than it is for non-rurals; certainly for provisional medical science students the cut-off is still above 99.5 for rural students, and I think for dentistry it probably wouldn't drop too far below the 99.5 mark, unfortunately. I also suspect they don't reserve too many places for rural applicants in dentistry like a lot of Australian medical schools do. Please let us know how you get on, though!

I am planning to do oral health at melborune university or csu and after one year will try for griffith university if i get a good gpa. If i end up making it into griffith can i get most of my units credited, like including the practical ones?

Also, for oral health which uni is better melbourne, csu or newcastle?

Hi firstsnow.
If you are doing oral health with the intention of getting into griffith dent, it may be challenging. Oral health is very hands on and that makes your grades somewhat more subjective and thus dependent on individual lecturers and tutors.

If you do end up doing oral health and get the requisite GPA then I'd imagine you will be able to have a few units exempted.

I'm not sure what you mean by better? If it's uni reputation than unimelb is ranked number 1 in Australia. But if it's how easy it is to get a good GPA then I'm not sure.

Crow may be able to tell you more.

I've had a brief look at the first year units for CSU's program and I have a feeling that you'd unfortunately probably struggle to get anything credited (other than the dent-specific first year subjects, potentially) - the first year of dentistry at Griffith is largely just foundation health subjects (intro to cell biology, basic anatomy and physiology, basic chemistry & organic chemistry) whereas the CSU oral health degree is (unsurprisingly) highly targeted towards oral health and public health, specifically. The same goes for UniMelb's course, by the looks of it. If you send an email to Griffith's dentistry faculty outlining the subjects you would be completing then I'm sure they'd be able to tell you what credits you'd be eligible for in advance - it's possible you could use the first year units from CSU/Melb as credits for 2nd/3rd year dent subjects at Griffith.

As for which is "better" out of CSU/Melbourne/Newcastle, as mzho says that completely depends on what your criteria for "better" is. If you already live near one of the unis / have a support network then I think that particular uni would be the "best" uni for you in that scenario. If not, you may wish to considering living expenses (Melbourne would be more expensive to live in than Newcastle or Holmesglen / Wagga Wagga) and distance from home for you.

Hi All,
Trust everyone had a nice Christmas break. I just thought I'd mention that on my QTAC portal, Griffith is now Satisfied. Not really sure what this means in substance though.
