Hey just wondering if anyone in Newcastle has stayed or knows about these kind of places? Looks like a realestate renting out rooms as student accommodation. Wondering if they're alright as I'll have to move to Newcastle without being able to look at anywhere.

Firstly, assuming I perform well on the UCAT, what are my chances of gaining entry at Newcastle considering I have no science qualifications? Secondly, I am eligible to apply through the rural scheme. Does this improve my chances? or is better if I apply through the BMP scheme?

1. science qualifications are irrelevant. You have as much chance as any other applicant at this stage.
2. rural and BMP are not either/or pathways. The rural pathway drops the UCAT and academic requirement for rural applicants only. The BMP pathway opens you up to the ~28.5% of places that are dedicated to this and is available to all applicants, rural or otherwise.

Follow up question - it says in the application for rural that you will be encouraged to complete your placement in rural areas. Is this set in stone? or do I have a choice in the matter to complete my placement in the Newcastle region?

I'm in first year of the JMP and I was in the same position last year. As LMG described, science qualification doesn't come in to it but as I'm finding now, previous biology exposure does help make the content easier once you're in (which I don't have).

Nope I sucked at UCAT, I was one of those 40-50th percentile people who got an interview and must have done alright there.

I was in aviation but I did do a BSc a long time ago

And what about the placements? Do you have an option to choose or do you have to go somewhere rural?

I'm still kind of working that out at the moment.

So usually I think you wouldn't do a placement at all until third year(which is all placement). The problem was people were going on placement and had no idea how a ward was run or anything like that. They are now having a first year placement (intro to medicine) to cover just that.

As to if you can choose where you go for it. I think at the end of second year you put in your preferences (there are 6 options for JMP, Armidale, Tamworth, Taree, Newcatle, Maitland and Godford). I'm still researching if you can ask to go somewhere else if you set it up yourself.

I was wondering if GPA is weighted a lot to get into JMP? I’m a first year non-rural student and I’m kinda iffy about my GPA this year! I saw the past records of offers and most of the ppl got really high GPA (like high 6’s and 7’s).

If you did any reading of the entry requirements on MSO you'd find that GPA is a hurdle only, set at 4.7+. Pass that hurdle and you'll be good to go, GPA is not much more than a tickbox. A higher GPA will not increase your chances of an offer. What you're likely seeing is other unis requiring much higher GPAs (6.5+), so a serious (and likely more successful) applicant would keep their options open and strive for 6.5+.

Hey guys just sitting here musing about UoN and have a question. I know they allocate to UoN and UNE. You may not get your preferred location. I'm wondering what would happen if you couldn't financially afford to attend UNE as you live in Newcastle? I'm assuming it would be "too bad, so sad"?

Yes, essentially this is the case. You could potentially look at what accommodation scholarships are on offer (I’m not sure for UNE, but there are quite a lot at UTAS where I am) to facilitate the move, but it’s not the SoM’s problem. They just offer you whatever you’re eligible for.

I assumed as much! I didn’t think of scholarships either so I’ll look into that too!

Nope, your chances are not lowered. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive an interview based off UCAT results alone (same as locals), then an offer based off meeting a GPA hurdle (same as locals) and performing well enough in the interview (same as locals).
