Otago Halls of Residence

I'm domestic, by the way I think the Salmond, Knox, City Col, St Mags and Selwyn all get letters posted out rather than an email i think :)

But I'm not sure whether I should decline Salmond and chance to get into one that I really like or just go with it!

I see you're waiting for Carrington? I don't know many people at Carrington who have gotten in from the waitlist. I think like there are a whopping total for 3 people, and they got in in the second semester... Don't think it's worth that wait!

Once your are in the general waiting list, would it be even much more risky? You are going to be selected randomly without any preference, does it?

Yeah, but Salmond wasn't on my preferences anyway and I'm not bothered too much about getting into Carrington :) I think I will probably accept Salmond and see how it goes!

I feel like such an idiot - had typed out my application but hadn't sent it in. Just sent it off this morning!

For anyone interested, I went Carrington > Knox > Studholme. Will let you know how it goes, more interested to just see if I'm accepted anywhere having sent it in so late. I know two of my friends from school have already been accepted into Carrington.

On the bright side, I'll probably be staying in Auckland, but I guess the option was always nice. Congratulations everyone on your offers!!!

So has Jamie Gilbertson left Arana for Salmond?

Not sure about next year, but he's still there this year. He was acting head of Knox last year as well so I'm guessing it'll just be the same where he handles both for a while. The man's a machine!

Salmond is a great hall. My friends who went there didn't have any complaints about it (other than distance), but it's a good place for making friends and other hall-related stuff nonetheless.

Hi can anyone tell me anything about Cumberland Court apart that it is a "flat-like" accommodation rather than "dormitory"? Such as interaction with others, socializing/meeting new people, facilities, personal experience, etc. There's not much information online about it

Also is it possible to be shifted from Cumberland Court to Cumberland College?

Any help would be great thanks!

My friend was at Cumby court last year and then shifted to the college second semester. She loved both though, at cumby court you get away with a bit more I guess because you're in more of a flatting situation but like anywhere it is what you make of it :) It's also really close to the science library and st dave's which is good!
They eat dinner at union hall I think (which is on campus)

I applied Hayward - Knox - Aquinas, and I got offered a position at Hayward! Looking forward to meeting some of you guys there next year.

Got an offer to Carrington. It says on the form if your above 6'2", I'm 6'6" so do they shove all the tall people in one house together or something?

They just try to give you a longer bed. Doesn't always eventuate, but definitely worth saying you're above 6'2" if you are.

Generally residents get randomly assigned into the Courts (as no one generally applies directly to them).

Lunch and Dinner Meals are at the Union (3 min walk), St Dave's is a 2 min walk so location is fantastic. You'll likely be in a 5 or 6 bedroom flat. Great sized rooms (compared to Cumby main block), got your own kitchen, lounge etc... I find they're not that well maintained and I find the Courts to be a little segregated from the main college.

Some residents prefer the Courts, some prefer the College. If you're a highly dependent person, then I'd try to get into the main College or go to the waiting list, as you're 6 or 7 minutes away from the core Cumberland support network. But if you're quite independent, the Courts could be perfect for you (you just don't get the College atmosphere).

You can always try to get moved. No harm in trying! But it may not be the best thing for you.

Im assuming the College atmosphere is the interaction with different people and the socialising? Does that mean the Courts would have less of that? Yeah im thinking whether should i turn down this offer as I am looking for more of a dormitory-type accommodatioin...

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum... but I got offered a place at Carrington! Look forward to seeing some of you down there next year :)

Maybe you should contact Cumberland and ask them directly and then you can always decline it?

I got offered a position at Arana, but I was just wondering what are the chances of getting into one of the Arana houses, should I select alcohol free rooms or a quieter area to improve my likelihood of not! I really want to be put into one of the main buildings. Thanks!

Yeah you'll potentially end up with a double bed - as mentioned it doesn't always work out but definitely put it!
