Otago Halls of Residence

whats fatty lane?
It's a street where you have a variety of fast food all around like McD, KFC, Dominos, and Hells Pizza. Plus, that street isn't far away from the main lecture theatre that you'll go to (St David's Lecture Theatre)

Hi guys ,
I applied for Carrington>Hayward>Unicol and got an offer for Unicol. I had my heart set on Carrington but another girl from my school got in and we would have had very similar applications so I'm going to tell myself that's why I wasn't accepted :'(
I'm quite excited for Unicol now but I've got a few questions for you lovely people -
1. I'm quite a quiet person - how overwhelming is it living with 500 other people?
2. How bad are the queue's for food?
3. Is it almost guaranteed that I'll be in the annex?

Thanks!!!

1) It get's pretty loud/hectic, especially at the start of the year. But there are plenty of other 'quiet sorts of people' there, so just try and find/cling to them. Really it's so compartmentalised that you don't really realise there's >500 people there until you see them all together for formal dinners and whatnot.
2) Usually really bad at 5 (when the lines open), because they're all in such a huge rush for food. If you show up at like, 5:30 then you can usually just walk right on up to the servery.
3) Nope, if anything that's unlikely. Most HSFYs are put in the flats (although there's a few in the towers/annexes, I was in the towers myself).

I got into Carrington! Woohoo! haha :P I'm guessing you did also? Congrats, looks like i'll be seeing you next year :) Are there any other MSO'ers who will be joining me?
On another note, a huge ups to everyone on here who gave really good descriptions of the colleges, they helped alot, so thanks a million! :)

Yay! Carrington buddies! See ya there next year :D

Thanks froot, the first few weeks are going to be a pretty big adjustment for poor little unsocial me but I'm determined to make the most of next year, YOLO or something right?

I confused myself about where they keep the HSFYs, ohwell here's hoping for the annexes anyways they look the newest (yy)

It's kind of difficult to be totally anti-social at UniCol (I tried, but there are so many people around that you legitimately can't help but make friends haha).
Yeah the annexes are pretty awesome in terms of newness/room size, but to be honest the flats are probably the best. The kids out in the flats get away with a LOT more than the towers/annexe lot, and they get a living room/laundry to five people (rather than 18), and a giant fridge.

Hey I put Carrington> Cumberland > Aquanis but my application is at Salmond? I'm a little confused, does that mean all of them passed me on? ): (A lot of people from my school put Carrington first and I didn't know about it so I am trying to think of that as why I didn't get in but I know the best college is the one you are in haha) but does anyone know what's going on? Apparently my friend had Hayward first and her application is at Salmond too even though it wasn't in her top 3 either and we are both academically pretty good and both have leadership roles at school as well as community stuff too?

A lot of the halls won't take more than a certain number from one school, so if a lot of people from your school applied there that could explain a lot.
As for getting a hall that wasn't even on your preference list, that happens to a lot of people (myself included), the whole halls-allocation thing is a bit of a magic-black-box to be honest.

Hey zozie, i am in the same situation with you!
My application is in Salmond College and my status is 'offered position', what does that mean? I didnt receive any email from the accomodation office yet.

By the way, How does Salmond College sounds like?

Never been inside it. But from the outside it just looks like a less old-school version of Knox. I'd imagine it's a perfectly adequate hall in terms of food/tutorials/college activities, most of them are!

Maybe they'll send an email out with all the details and for you to sign a contract etc! I hope Salmond is okay!

Hey guys, I thought I'd talk a little bit about Salmond.

1. Firstly, the reason a lot of you are there is because the Head of Arana is currently running Salmond. He has a lot of sway within the University so it's not surprising he's picked up some excellent candidates from the waitlist.

2. Because of a new Head of College, it's hard to tell what Salmond will be like. I was a resident there in first year and loved it. Great location (I don't mind the 10min walk to St Davids through the Gardens), not too big, good food. The rooms could be a little nicer/bigger. They party pretty hard there due to the influence of the Polytech students. Unfortunately it means that during Uni exams the Polytech residents are partying!

3. Should you decline if you'd prefer another College? Normally I'd say NO! But with an extra 140 beds on offer next year (120 at te Rangi and 20 more beds at Toroa) I feel that you would find a suitable College if you declined your current offer. HOWEVER, this is a bit risky and a nervous wait. I would not be surprised that for the first time in years all the Colleges weren't full. That said, Salmond is a good solid College, and if the Head of Arana (Jamie) is running it next year, then it'll be run very well.

Same here! I wish to get into dent!:)
By the way, are you domestic student? Im an international student:D

I'm domestic, by the way I think the Salmond, Knox, City Col, St Mags and Selwyn all get letters posted out rather than an email i think :)

But I'm not sure whether I should decline Salmond and chance to get into one that I really like or just go with it!

Once your are in the general waiting list, would it be even much more risky? You are going to be selected randomly without any preference, does it?
