I have read somewhere only 1-2 a year out of 30ish guaranteed students failed before. The criteria for passing is like having 50+ average marks for the 8 MMI stations PLUS not having more than 3 stations <50. For example 4 45s + 4 75s would be a fail despite 60 average. Good thing is you only need to pass not have to compete against other students.

I guess if you fail you'll have to re-apply next year as a non-guaranteed student.

I'm assuming this is the chancellor's scholarship (99.90) pathway?
What do you know about the other 99 atar pathway? Is it also the same pass rates?

That sounds too high. I got just below 50 one time and I only knew like 8 questions.
8 questions you knew

You could probably cross off 1 or 2 options for a few questions so it made guessing around 50% chance to be correct

I’d say it’s about right but obviously can’t be certain for anything

Yes that's for the 99.90 pathway. Not sure about the 99 pathway, I can only speculate that (apart from 75+ WAM for the 99s) since it's a similar pass/fail interview rather than competitive the pass rates should be similar.

Are our results in University (Namely, say, Biomedicine at Monash or Melbourne Uni) based on other's performance or is it simply a score?
In other words, is it a percentile/ranking system or do we just judged on our own work and receive a mark.

Hey guys just a question. If my uni results for semester 2 don't release until 29/11 after interviews have been sent out, will I be judged on my Semester 1 academic performance only?

They typically use your full-year GPA when making place offers in Dec/Jan, but in your particular case
WSU : Your ex-ATAR is over the 95.5 hurdle, GPA won't matter
JMP : You are easily over the GPA 4.8 hurdle so no problem

UNSW : Interview invite is probably based on 1st semester but full year for place offer later.

JCU seems to not send 1st-round interview invites to those who have only completed one semester at that stage. They wait for full-year results and invite to 2nd-round interviews.

Technically you get judged on your own work, however naturally you will be compared with other students during marking. Some course convenors are also notorious for marking on a bell curve (not sure about Melbourne or Monash) I.e “only 7% of students should be getting a HD, therefore I make sure that I don’t give out more than that.” But no, it’s not a percentile/ranking system as such.

Re: JCU.

For one of my units this semester, I got 93 as a raw mark. It was moderated to 81, as explained above. Now, I understand that my transcript will have 81 (distinction) on it for this unit, but when I apply for JCU, could they consider this unit as a high distinction with my initial marks, and recalculate my GPA?

Unlikely. JCU goes by what sent to them by QTAC after processing your application. An MSOer has managed to get confirmation from QTAC that they use the letter grade codes on your transcript, so original 93 or moderated 81 mark is not relevant.

I like to correct the above "UNSW & JCU : Interview invite is probably based on 1st semester but full year for place offer later" to for UNSW only. JCU seems to not send 1st-round interview invites to those who have only completed one semester at that stage. They wait for full-year results and invite to 2nd-round interviews.

JCU refuses to look at anything other than what qtac sends them. This unfortunately holds true even if qtac sends them incorrect information

Source: myself getting screwed around by JCU last year and missing an opportunity for interview with a GPA of 7

The written application makes up a big part of what gets you an interview so having a perfect gpa doesn’t guarantee you anything :(

Did QTAC tell you your GPA was 7?

Depends which university you're at. Most technically force course conveners to mark based on raw performance, not relative performance (it's written into a lot of universities' academic codes/whatever they're called).

With that said, as someone mentioned already, some course conveners don't follow that to the letter. Quite often papers will get scaled - which ensures that grades are relatively comparable between year groups - and universities tend to be fine with that. And it makes sense - you don't want one year group to all get A+s and then the next to have a 50% failure rate on technically the same course.

I think what the unis really try to discourage is a kind of percentile/class ranking grading system. Some departments do flirt with not-dissimilar ideas, like the 'I'll only give 7% of the class HDs' mentioned above which sit on the borderline of normal scaling and a class-ranking type system (and I know a couple of departments like that here).

Unfortunately there's not much you can do about it, except perhaps sounding out previous students from particular papers to see what the marking was like.

So, in one of my units last semester, the rubric for one assessment provided in the Learning Guide was changed without notice. The new rubric was used to grade our assessments.
I've put in a Review of Grade. For those who are familiar with this process, what is the likely outcome?

Pls help how do I get UMAT out of my mind until results, it’s taking over my thoughts.

Easier said than done, but try keep yourself occupied! :D Do the things you enjoy doing, surround yourself with those you love and keep working at some of your goals (getting a job, finishing off yr 12 strong) whatever it may be. The time will pass regardless. I'm sure you did well :)

Hello dood

Like Trinhcent said, keep yourself occupied. I’d go further than that and say try getting out of your house as much as possible and try have some activity that takes 1-2 hours to do daily. For me it’s the gym. And I go to uni which always keeps me busy.

Also sign up for some volunteering stuff and perhaps get a job if you don’t have one currently.

The start is usually hard but as time goes past it gets easier to not let it take over your thoughts. Personally I’ve got a bunch of stuff going on and a whole lot of stuff I do on a weekly basis and i find it’s really easy to forget about the results. I also recommend not coming on this website a lot haha because you’re occupying your mind with something umat related and if you can’t wait for the results, it’ll make time go reaalllllllyyy slowly.

I’d also rather time go slowly because there’s only about 43 days to the GAMSAT and ive got a lot deadlines to meet so there’s that. This goes back to the keeping yourself occupied thing. I probably repeated myself a few times and to be honest I probably did so because I’m sitting in front of my laptop about to watch a lecture recording but I’m procrastinating... time to stop writing.

Good luck hope this helps fam
