Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Hey MSO, I have a quick question. I have received an offer at both UNSW and Adelaide Uni. My Mum is obsessed with me attending unsw because she believes there are more opportunities there for me. From what I’ve read on here, that isn’t true. I really want to stay in Adelaide but am having second thoughts with her opinion in my mind. Anyway, are there more career opportunities as a result of graduating from UNSW as opposed to Adelaide? Many Thanks :)

No.

Edit: beaten to the punch

definitely No.

My cousin graduated from Adelaide and is doing very well as a doctor and looking to specialise soon.
I have other relatives who graduated from UNSW and they are doing okay as doctors but they said it is generally very very competitive in NSW and not easy to get into their chosen specialist fields.

Hi Keung, what medical school did your son receive an offer at, and was it a CSP or a BMP? Different schools have different policies regarding deferment.

Ok, thanks - if he commenced tertiary study he will NOT be able to defer the Griffith offer and start at UNSW. He either needs to a) Relinquish the Griffith offer and start his alternative course at UNSW, b) Accept the Griffith offer and relinquish the UNSW offer or c) Defer both offers and take a gap year, to decide what he wants to do in a year’s time.

Btw, as you are the moderator, can you tell me how to edit my post?
Can’t figure out how to do it

I have a question about Adelaide Dent (i know it’s kinda the wrong place but I thought it would be better to move it here with more people). Can I defer my offer to Adelaide Dent and start a non-medical course in NSW? Is that allowed?

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I feel my passion is much more aligned to med than dent now than when I did my interview but I haven’t gotten a med offer. I was thinking of a break from that where I could do more work experience and sit the UCAT again. If I get a better score and get an offer for med, I think I will decline my Uadelaide offer. Otherwise, I think I will assess it more at that time and make that decision without external pressures?

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thank you so much for your help.
As my son is away, I think I have to deal with it once he makes the decision. It makes me quite nervous, to be honest.
Do you know how to relinquish the the offer of UNSW as he has already accepted it and enrolled?
Can anyone help me on this?

Domestic Undergraduate Direct, Honours or Deferred Students | Getting Started Follow the instructions on this site. If you have problems I’d recommend calling student services.

Don’t stress about doing this urgently - it only needs to be done before the census date (check the date but it should be sometime in mid March, I believe).

Hi,
I got an offer for med at Griffith GC from QTAC today, as well as another non-med course through VTAC which was my first preference. While I don't think I'm going to take on the med offer, I'm not 100% sure, but I definitely don't want/need to change my QTAC preferences or anything. Should I/can I enrol in both the courses? And withdraw/un-enrol before a certain date? (Does anyone know what that date is?)

Yes, you’re fine to do that so long as you un-enrol from the Griffith course prior to the census date, which is the 24th March according to the Griffith site.

That’s important information
So, my son can enrol with Griffith before un-enrol with UNSW?

Do you know the census date of UNSW?

Yes, that’s correct. The census date would be on the UNSW website, likely the “key dates” page.

If I take a gap year and do the UCAT, which universities would not allow me to apply for undergrad medicine?

Adelaide uni! Would Adelaide University know or mind if I started another course and deferred their dental program? Is that allowed? I tried sending an email to them but I haven't received a reply yet
I think that would be fine considering they accept non-standard applicants for dentistry there anyway, but I would definitely get something in writing from the uni to confirm that.
