Transferring Between Medical Schools

2nd year at Monash Malaysia but I’m an Aus citizen too, I’ve contacted quite a few via email but all no’s. Also planning on applying to WSU

Yeah, the only people I know who’ve come up with a ‘viable plan’ were those that applied to WSU and started from scratch.

You may (and this is just me being entirely hypothetical, I have literally no idea if it’s still possible) be able to get an exit degree from MM and use it for graduate entry applications? I know of one person successful with this though I have no idea how exceptional the circumstances were, how many graduate unis accepted the application, or what additional hoops had to be jumped through.

There's virtually no hope for this transfer. You being a full-fee international student at Monash Malaysia, the schools in Australia cannot transfer you into a CSP spot here.

Even CSP to CSP transfer within Aus is extremely rare. To give example of one case I know of, the student was studying med at Adelaide when their parent in Melb was diagnosed with terminal illness. They were allowed to transfer midstream into Monash to be at home with the parent.

Did you end up transferring to any uni? Trying to find a uni that will allow me to transfer from another medical course
No, I am continuing on at my current university(with greater difficulty). I am aware of a few students that have had transfers approved within Sydney undergraduate universities but not sure what their circumstances were.

Hi guys, could someone please help me find information on transfers to curtin based on compassionate grounds? Am currently at an undergrad med school in another state but may be unable to return due to emergency family circumstances. Couldn't work out how to start a new discussion so sorry if this comes up as a reply!

Transfers between medical schools are very, very rare and are made on a case-by-case basis. There won't be publicly accessible information because of this. You will need to communicate with Curtin and your current medical school about this - but feel free to inform us of the outcome if you're willing! Best of luck.

Hi everyone!
I wasn’t sure how to make a new post, and my question is relevant to this sub-thread. I’ll be going into my second year of bond med and waiting to hear back UWS about transferring. Ive also sent my documents off to JMP. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of anyone with similar circumstances to me transferring?
Briefly - before commencing medical school I was a carer for my grandmother (recently in remission from cancer). My mum agreed to care for her while I go to medical school, but since my mums mental health has taken a steep decline. Shes unable to care for my grandma and there’s no one else other than myself who can care for her. There’s some other stuff with my mum (trauma from our past) that is also being considered. I’ve provided letters from GPs and psychologists, but I’m really worried I’ll have no other option than withdrawing from medical school. I am sitting the GAMSAT in March to try and get into a school closer to home as well. Any one with a similar experience who has transferred or know of anyone with similar circumstances who have transferred, could you please let me know? Sorry for the lengthy/oversharing post, just feeling a bit lost right now.

A family friend got a transfer under similar circumstances. She was in Adelaide Med when her mum in Melb was diagnosed with a terminal illness, she was allowed to transfer to Monash. However that was CSP to CSP, in your case full-fee to CSP will be doubly difficult I think.

Thanks for you reply and sharing the transfer undertaken by your family friend. I’m also sorry to hear about her mother’s terminal illness. I’ve definitely thought about the fee differences, in fact I mentioned it within my reason to transfer documentation. I said that I understood that I might not receive a CSP place, and that I’d really appreciate the opportunity to be considered for a bonded medical place

Hey guys. I have been lurking for a bit and after reading some of y'alls responses to cases similar to mine i'm well aware this is more or less a shot in the dark but thought i'd ask anyway.
I believe I identify as an international student seeing as i'm studying in the ME despite being an AUS citizen. I'm currently halfway through MS2 and am looking to eventually end up in AUS- preferrably as soon as feasible.
I've gathered that my options are:
1. land an internship in AUS- chances are slim to none
2. go the Competent pathway route
3. apply as a non-standard applicant & sit the UCAT with no guarantee of entry (+ lose my current degree)

1/2 seem to be my best bet if not for the fact that i'm miserable studying med here and it's plainly reflecting in my academic performance. I went from 95+ in HS to 85-90 in FY to 70-80 in MS1 and now, 60-70, barely passing in MS2. This is not only adding to the current issue but also jeopardising any chance of option 3 ever working out in the future.
I know medical transfers are pretty much unheard of- especially not internationally and from a medical school that isn't AMC accredited (it is "recognised" though but that's useless I think) but is there nothing else out there?
I'm at loss as to what to do tbh, if anyone could weigh in and give me their two cents or guidance, i'd be appreciative. Ta

Unfortunately there's nothing else, other than sit UCAT to try for JMP (I guess your GPA pretty much excludes you from the other non-standard options WSU UNSW JCU). If you are not yet successful for JMP you can continue on with your current course.

Hi everyone

I received a BMP offer today for the University of Newcastle (doctor of medicine) and am very grateful.
However as I am a GWS student I put WSU as my first preference, UNSW as my second and Newcastle as my third. I achieved a UCAT of 3200 and my GWS score was 767.7 (which is very high)

My question is, is it possible to still being offered a WSU offer? Is it possible to switch with another student who may possibly be in the same position (being offered WSU when their local university is UNE)? Can anyone share their insight into this?

Also should I contact the university to find out if further offers will be made before accepting my UNE offer?
Love to switch with you if it is possible

its possible to switch unis but not for reasons like proximity - more like for crisis reasons and you have to go through the deans I think
Is is possible to switch before you start the year or you have to do at least one year?

As above: you cannot switch places with others for university positions.

If, in incredibly exceptional circumstances, you are enrolled and a reasonable period of time through a medical degree, then some unis may allow for a transfer. This is very very rare.

This is very very rare.
Very VERY VERY very very very VERY rare

I’ve seen a number of pretty awful situations people have been in and try to apply for transfers on this forum… not one has gone through IIRC

I didn't get a UNSW offer today and am pretty pessimistic about getting one in a future round.

I am applying to Bond uni and in the off chance I do get in, I was wondering how likely a transfer is from Bond back to UNSW. My family does have lots of stress (I have a mentally ill middle brother and a very anxious younger brother who needs me + very busy parents). I am aware Bond is non-CSP and UNSW is CSP, but I really want to give this a try. I have no idea if it's possible, but I am very much willing to try. Have you ever heard of this being a possibility?

0. I would not make a decision based off this being a possibility. I would consider this pathway non existent.

Sounds harsh, but that’s because it is. Sounds like you’re in a tough position

I see. Thanks for telling me it straight up. I'll try and see how things go with Bond uni but ultimately it'll be a hard decision.

It will be.

Remember the avenues to medicine are diverse. May seem hard to let an offer go but don’t move heaven and earth to just attend medical school. It’s a battle as it is to complete it, and the last thing you want is to make a big expensive mistake if you decide to enrol and then can’t work it into your personal/financial situation

Nothing wrong at all doing post graduate aswell. Something like 50% of places don’t even open up to you until you finish your degree

As a stranger on the internet who knows nothing about your situation I would suggest greatly reconsidering if bond is the way to go.

I completely and very strongly agree with dotwingz that this is a non-existent pathway. So non-existent, in fact, that when JeydinNewWon asked me about this(?) earlier (I think??!) I didn’t even consider that this is what was being proposed and assumed it was a question about using Bond Med grades for non-standard entry.

Some universities (JMP, traditionally, I’m not sure if they still do) have allowed people at Bond to re-do UCAT and apply as a non-standard applicant using their Bond Med GPA. This is NOT a transfer, and people using this route (if it’s even still available) are classed as a regular non-standard applicant and are expected to start the JMP at year one.

Actual transfers between universities are basically unicorns at this point.

Thank you so much for your input!

It'll be a hard decision for me to make, and I'm still coming to terms with not getting the UNSW offer. I'm just fearful of doing another year of UCAT, and the whole mess with uni GPAs and WAMs and such converting to Selection Ranks. I'm not sure if I can do it, or if I am even capable. But I'll just give it my all.
