[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Thanks so much LMG! and Mana. I'll follow up on practicing with a medical condition :D

And I forgot to ask the most important question...which Australian unis can I apply for/ would I have a chance of getting an interview or an offer at?

My parents are also divorced (not sure if that makes a difference but I saw someone else above write that)

Quite a few! Bond, JCU, JMP, I'm not sure how your bonuses will work, but maybe Monash and UNSW? Not UWS or UTAS.

Apparently Monash is not taking the 50-50-50 rule into consideration this year.

Also, does any medicine course in Australia consider subject bonus points? I do Bio, Chem, LOTE.

If you're doing a UAC application anyway, then yeah, can't hurt. Who knows how the GWS 'bonus' will work out this year. I wouldn't be counting on an interview invite, but if you have a spare line in your UAC application, then go for it.

I don't think there is any specific university bonus for having divorced parents, unfortunately. This would only be useful as supporting evidence for another category such as financial hardship or educational disadvantage.

Any chance of first round interview offers for Monash?

I think this depends on whether you are a Victorian school leaver - you will get some small bonus for this which may just tip you over to having an interview in first round.

Overall UMAT Score: 192
Section One: 66
Section Two: 67
Section Three: 59
Overall Percentile Rank: 97
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 97.85ish (converting from NCEA in NZ)
Preferred University: Adelaide, Flinders, JMP.
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: School Leaver
State: New Zealand

Question/s:
Does anyone know my odds of getting an interview at Adelaide/ or a place at Flinders? (interview would be 2nd round I believe due to being in NZ)
Also; I really want to go to Aus but if the international fees go through I won't be able to and will be going to Otago. Does anyone know if getting a similar score to this will get me a spot at Otago provided I get A's (not A+'s lol) because I know they use a different weighting criteria and use raw scores?

Adelaide will certainly interview you with those but Flinders will not offer you a spot.

If you had those scores again in Otago you'd certainly get a place.

Unfortunately I think those scores might be too low for WSU at this point, sorry.

Apparently Monash may not be taking the 50-50-50 rule into consideration this year, no one knows for sure.

You might want to check how the SEAS/EAS works - generally these schemes only add points to the ATAR rather than the UMAT which isn't really as much help to you in this situation as a boost to the UMAT score, which is really the thing that is holding you back from receiving interviews at all those universities you listed. Similarly enough the bonus points for subjects have slowly been phased out of pretty much all university medical programs except (I think) UQ.

I have seen recent comments on S1 needing to be over 60 for JMP? I thought their threshold was 50 in S1, S2 & S3 ? What are changes of JMP & other listed Unis for Interview? IB student so results/ATAR only due 6 Jan.

University of melbourne is a post graduate program which does not consider UMAT. With your ATAR, may be okay for UWA

Not quite the pathway I think they are talking about at this point - the Chancellor's Program can give this person a place in the Melbourne MD (FFP) if they pass an interview in 3rd year. If this person has a 99.95 they would potentially be eligible for a Melbourne MD CSP spot.

As stated above - you might want to look into the Melbourne Uni Chancellor's program. A 99.00 will give you a shot at an FFP place while a 99.95 will give you a shot at a CSP place. However, there is a huge caveat to this and that is that you would have to study at Melbourne for 3 years prior rather than starting medical school elsewhere and there is no guarantee that you will get a place with this.

UWA will consider your application for this but don't forget there are other universities who might look at that score (Adelaide and the JMP certainly deserve an application with those scores).

Thanks again LMG! and Mana :D Always coming to the rescue!

Cool, I'll apply everywhere except for UWS, UTAS and Bond too unfortunately because of the cost.

Assuming an average interview, what ATAR do I need to be competitive/ receive an offer for all Australian unis (not inc. UWS, UTAS and Bond)?

The JMP's cutoff for interview is based on the following modus operandi:
1. All applicants below 50 in any section are removed
2. Applicants are then ranked by their section 1 score
3. The top X people ranked by those scores are given an interview (the cutoffs last year were S1 of 60-61)
4. The interview and PQA (done at the interview) determine the final rank (100% ranking) for place offers.

So unfortunately as your S1 is too low for an interview at the JMP you'll likely miss out on a place there.

Look at the first link in my forum signature - it's an excellent summary by A1 which answers 90% of the questions in this thread.
