UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Do you know how many places to be offered in round 2?I went to Unsw today and saw a sign on the building which stated “16/1,17/1 and 18/1 MBS/MD interview “ 3 days interview.!I think they extend interview pool this year.

I'm told UNSW deliberately under-offers round1 to allow enough remaining places for round2. For example if the round1/round2 interviews ratio is 60/40 UNSW would offer 55% of places to round1. The 45% of places for round2 appears overgenerous but don't forget the ex-round1s will be in for the round2 offers too. This way UNSW ensures both rounds face the same offer cutoff.

On this example there'd be 45% of 150 non-rural place = ~65 for round2.

Hi, I heard unsw now offers place more relies on interview. Is it right? My friend has Atar 99.5 ucat 3080. She gets unbounded offer. Not rural no any special consideration.

From this UNSW webpage
> Local applicants

"Your offer to study medicine at UNSW will be based on three selection criteria:
your academic rank - your UCAT ANZ overall score - your interview score

Applicants are ranked using these three selection criteria.
(so not 100% on the interview)
Offers will be made to applicants with the highest rank determined by all measures. (this means in combination right?)
Scores aren’t averaged - a high score in one area won’t compensate for a low score in another."

In combination but not averaged, we need to complete a PhD degree to figure it out. Maybe PhD DrDrLMG! can 🤔

How beneficial would the 4th yr/potential honours be if you are interested in getting involved in research in the future? I was thinking that a uni project wouldn't have as much impact on your future career, but I'm not sure if doing the honours stream might change that. Also, I know that prestige doesn't really affect job opportunities in terms of getting an internship etc, but does it have any benefit if I was interested in pursuing a PhD later down the track?

As far as I am aware (having talked to some doctors who graduated from UNSW) I don't think there is any benefit at all to the prestige or to the research year.

Hey guys, I am a bit confused with the UNSW entry requirements. When does ATAR stop coming into consideration and only WAM/GPA get looked at when applying?? If it all.

You hit the nail on the head with “if at all”. As things currently stand, UNSW looks at both regardless of how long ago you graduated year 12. You need to meet the minimum requirements for both and then they’ll use the best of as your academic rank for your application (ie. they don’t combine them, they compare them and use the best one).

This was an email from UNSW admissions last year in March:
'If you have completed a tertiary degree before the end of the year in which you apply, only the tertiary qualification will be considered for admission to the Medicine program. Your tertiary studies must reach a minimum WAM/GPA equivalent of a 96.00 ATAR. As you have completed a tertiary degree, we will no longer consider your secondary qualification, i.e. a minimum 96.00 ATAR (or equivalent) is not applicable. This will be the only determination of your applicant score'

So looks like if you have completed a degree your ATAR is thrown out the window

Thanks for this info. I just looked in UNSW Admissions website and it is indeed so.

Must be a recent change since I didn't see it like that before. UNSW has copied WSU - 'best of' until you've completed a degree.

Hello, I saw that there are several campuses (kensington, port macquarie), and just wondering if I have to apply separately for each campuses? or do they consider them as a whole?

Thank you

And Wagga Wagga. I don’t think you apply to each, I think you have to indicate in your application which campuses you’d be interested in being considered for.

Does anyone have any knowledge about how EAS works with UNSW medicine? It looks like I'm gonna be getting an atar of high 97- to low 98, and judging by some recent mocks, a UCAT of about 3080-3100. Under normal circumstances my chances are zero for an interview offer, but I was wondering whether EAS (H01B: Severe illness of friend/family) would make it possible for me to get in? Thanks a lot!

Hey A1
What do you mean when you say chance? Do you mean excluding the interview component?
It's a guesstimate of your pre-interview chance, without knowing anything about you, doing the interview well enough to get a place offer.

For example JMP has one place for around 4 interviewees, your chance is the 1/4 ratio = 25%. Kinda same as saying your interview needs to be in the top 25%.

For other schools where ATAR and/or UCAT are counted in the final ranking, a high ATAR/UCAT gives you better than the ratio chance. If you have say 70% chance your interview needs to "beat" 30% of the interviewees (better prospects than 25% chance beating 75%).

Hi all!
I am currently a 2nd year UNSW student who has completed more than 1 FTE of uni studies. I want to get into UNSW med next year hopefully so i was just curious what a 6.8 GPA would convert to in terms of an equivalent ATAR? I saw that a 6.5 plus GPA converts to 99.5 according to A1's table of med entrance requirements.
Thanks!

The table shows GPA 6.5+ = 99.5 but UNSW can apply their own variations to it.

From what posted on MSO one unsuccessful applicant called UNSW to enquire, was told they were below the 99.6 cutoff.
However in that same offer round we saw an offer posted by a non-standard with 6.7. That means 6.7 must have been 99.6 or higher, did not stop at 99.5. My guess is 6.8 would be around 99.7-99.8.

Just did my UCAT and got a 3190 UCAT. My plan is to now not do any further courses in my current degree as i already have more than 1 FTE and just do the interview. This won't affect any requirements or gpa right? I just wanna make sure my 6.8 gpa stands regardless of the fact I dont do courses in Term 2 and 3 2024

A1 replies: We have replied a few times, not studying Term 2 & 3 has no effect on your GPA or your non-standard status.

Found this on UNSW webpage. Does this mean applicant who took English as a Second Language or Fundamentals of English are not eligible to apply for this program?
