UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

I got an interview for UNSW however I'm from SA so it means I would have to fly in which is both expensive and timely. I scored 99.55 and 3070 (93rd percentile) so I just scraped an interview and I'm wondering what the odds are of getting an offer and how good my interview would have to be? I saw someone post similar stats and get a 20-25% chance, I'm wondering where this number comes from or if it's more of a guesstimate. Thanks so much!
It's complicated to explain in detail. In the past the applicants who scraped an interview were given as low as 5% chance. Now they don't even get an interview let alone any chance.

So, without having to compete against those with say 99.40+98%ile (or 99.80+91%ile) your chances improve to 20-25%. Just an educated guesstimate. Note that it doesn't translate to how good your interview in absolute terms, it's relative to the others such that yours is in the top 20-25% of the interview marks.

Guys for those who didnt receive an interview for UNSW round 2, did u guys get a rejection letter? Because I havent received any clarification regarding my application.

Hey does UNSW offer on-campus accommodation for medical students in Wagga Wagga. Does it even have a proper campus there because it seems to be right next to the base hospital. Just checking before I apply for a random share house...

Hey bro. This happened last year to a couple of my mates, but fret not some of them did actually get an interview offer after they sent through the email regarding an update. I think your best bet is to email the uni and let them know. I know some of my students have the same problem and they emailed. Let us know how it goes and what u get back. I am sure there are other students in the same boat as well.

youll have to double triple check this information (i cant guarantee its 100% right) 1 of my friends at wagga wagga said that the unsw dorms are built yet so they had to move into the charles sturt university dorms

Hey guys, for those that got interviews for round 1 but didn’t get an offer, did you receive any emails today? Like reconsideration or rejection??

So did they receive rejections today like other universities??
I heard directly from UNSW that *all* applicants missing out round1 offers will go into the pool with the interstates for round2 consideration. What then happens is - if enough interstates perform well to exceed the round1 cutoff they take all the remaining spots. But if they don't perform well such that the round2 place-offer cutoff is lowered then some NSW locals (who were lower than round1 cutoff but now higher than round2 cutoff) will get an offer.

So I don't think UNSW sends out rejections yet. If they do it'd only be to anyone who rank so low they have no hope in round2.

Hey did anyone who received an offer preferenced over UNSW receive an email about a bonded offer there? Thought it was quite funny when I got this email... lol PS: Weirdly they replaced my first name with bonded 🤣[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Then what do you think of those who haven't received any email for round 2 interview offers like my boi anurag. coz i don't think they would be manually sending the emails and it should be automated. so it's a bit odd if a couple of people haven't been told anything about round 2 even after they have been told they would be reconsidered for that round.

unless do you think that they don't send out emails to those with special entry like gateway. coz some people who applied through gateway received an email saying they would be reconsidered for round 2 couple days after Dec 14th.

My post above is about being (re)considered for a round2 place offer. Your question is about reconsidered for an interview invite.

I think UNSW round2 invites have been released, so any reconsideration has been undertaken. Anyone still not hearing any news I'm sorry to say that's probably end of the road. (Top-up interviews occasionally are given by some unis but UNSW is never short of interviewees to need to).

I know a few people with gateway entry and most of them received round 1 interviews, with some people not receiving offers but being reconsidered for round 2. Given it’s up to 10 offers, I’d say it’s unlikely NSW gateway applicants are given round 2 interviews cause if they were taking more people it would either be interstate or from the existing pool probably.

So I got an email saying that I didn't get Jan Round 1 offer but to there is possibility I may get one in round 2 or following rounds, telling me to keep UNSW med as highest preference. Is this a default rejection letter for round 1 like for everyone or is this for people who ranked close so they still have a chance. Last year, got rejection letter for Jan Round 1 but said my rank lower than 50 places below round 1 cut off so unlikely for following round offer and recommendation to remove UNSW med as preference.

So looking back at last year's rejection letter and this years, does than mean I ranked higher than 50 places below round 1 cut off. Also, does "round 1" cut off mean that they didn't send offer to all their places and still have some vacant for next round or do I have to wait for people rejecting offer to be next in line to get offer?

Also any estimates on how many people get UNSW med offer after round 1?

FOR reference 2023 rejection email:
Thank you for applying for the UNSW Bachelor of Medical Studies / Doctor of Medicine program in 2023. We are writing to advise that unfortunately we have not been able to make you an offer, as you have been ranked below the threshold for selection.
You are currently ranked more than 50 places below the cut-off for an offer. Please note that we do not disclose exact rankings to applicants.
It is unlikely you will be eligible for an offer to this program in a later UAC round for 2023 admission, so we recommend removing UNSW BMed/MD (428000) from your preferences within UAC.
You still have plenty of options at your disposal, particularly if you have a passion for becoming a doctor, working within a clinical setting, and making an impact on the future of health.

2024 rejection email:
Thank you for applying for the UNSW Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine program in 2024.
We are writing to advise you that, based on your current ranking, we are unable to offer you a place in the program in January Round 1. Please note that we do not disclose exact rankings to applicants.
While your rank has fallen below the cut-off for this UAC round, there is still a possibility of receiving an offer in UAC’s January Round 2 or subsequent rounds.
Accordingly, you may wish to consider listing the UNSW Bachelor of MedicalStudies/Doctor of Medicine (428000) as your highest eligible preference in the upcoming UAC offer rounds.

Obviously UNSW did not give all their places out to round1, they need to keep some for round2 interviewees namely interstates. These places are *not* intended as round2 offers for round1 NSW locals.

However you can be in contention for a round2 place as explained in this post

I’m in the same boat that I did not receive an offer in Jan round 1, but received the chance for reconsideration (which is given to the top 70 ranked students below the offer cutoff, as per emails this year). However, I received offers at every other Uni I applied to including JMP with their 100% interview weighting.

The reason I mention that is because I felt my interview went as well as the rest, and I doubt it was marked poorly. I also had a very high 99th percentile UCAT and a 99.7+EAS. However, you may recall A1, I did the SAT this year, which is where my 99.7 comes from. Clearly it worked and got me an interview invite. However, I’m wondering if during the offers process, they considered my original 99 ATAR.

What do you think? I’m of the mind to send an enquiry to the Med Admissions email and see what they say.

I have seen couple of students like you with high ATAR(raw) + high UCAT and got interview-heavy place offers yet no UNSW. Possible reasons:
- Your interview went too well which could be interpreted as well rehearsed (a no no for UNSW) or it didn't gel with what you wrote in the direct application.
- Or UNSW decided to use your actual ATAR as you mentioned.

I recall applicants have called UNSW to ask how their interviews went. Their answer is of course non-specific but generally they say it was good but in combination the final ranking not high enough. So you can "lay a trap" ask UNSW how your interview was - if they say good quiz them how come good + 99.70 + 99%ile not enough for an offer. If they say because your ATAR is 99.0 then you know the reason.

I’ll try that. Is there a med specific unsw number? I know the email but haven’t seen a number.

In any case, it’s a shame to not receive an offer to UNSW. Do you know how diverse Newcastle/JMP is in comparison? In general I prefer areas with more cultures.
