UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

View attachment 5725
Found this on UNSW webpage. Does this mean applicant who took English as a Second Language or Fundamentals of English are not eligible to apply for this program?
Afaik UNSW has no formal requirement of English. Can do any subject you're eligible to apply, but of course if your English is too weak it'll be picked out during the interview for rejection.

The table shows GPA 6.5+ = 99.5 but UNSW can apply their own variations to it.

From what posted on MSO one unsuccessful applicant called UNSW to enquire, was told they were below the 99.6 cutoff.
However in that same offer round we saw an offer posted by a non-standard with 6.7. That means 6.7 must have been 99.6 or higher, did not stop at 99.5. My guess is 6.8 would be around 99.7-99.8.
Hey A1, I have a question regarding the gpa formula, I have a 7, 6.5 and 6 right now and if u get 3 more 7s for a 0.875 EFTSL, will that be a 6.75 or will it depend on wam? One of my subjects is pass fail which I passed as well?
Thanks for the help.
My atar is also 98.85 with a 3390 ucat so I'm wondering if I'll be able to get an interstate offer non standard or not or at least my chances if my gpa ends up at 6.5 or lower.

Your GPA would be (7+6.5+6+7+7+7) / 6.
The pass/fail unit is not counted toward GPA thus divided by 6 not 7.

However the concern is with 0.875 FTE the GPA won't convert to 99.5+ to be competitive for UNSW.

Your 3390 should definitely get JMP and possibly WSU interviews though.

How likely is a 3080 UCAT with a 98.65 EAS to receive an interview offer this year? I am a non-std applicant :) If I am likely to receive an interview offer from UNSW, is it a good idea to do interview prep for it now or wait until I get the offer? I heard the timeframe between the interview offer and the interview is short... so I assume the former.

Should clarify. How likely for 1st round interview?

Just curious if UNSW has an earlier interview round for non-standard applicants if you meet their academic thresholds? Or if you are pooled together with the rest of the school leavers during the December/Jan round? TIA

Hey A1 what percentile do you think someone with a 99.75 ATAR and 3100 UCAT has to score/perform in their interview to get a UNSW med offer? Also I've heard that as a first year uni student even if you get a 7GPA this only converts to a 99.5 ATAR max?

Noting this is only an indicative estimate - I'd say 99.75 / 3100 has about 30% offer chance i.e. the interview needs to be in the 70+ percentile.

We saw a non-standard posting up their UNSW first-round offer with GPA 6.7. In that same round a UNSW officer said the ATAR/Selection Rank cutoff was 99.60, so I believe 6.7 converts to 99.6 or more.

does that mean if my GPA is 7 this year my chances of an offer would increase by quite a bit? lets say a 50th percentile interview?

___________
A1 replies: At best we can hope GPA 7 converts to 99.8-99.9. Then relative to 99.75 that would improve offer chances to maybe 35-40%.

Hey so turns out I'm eligible for the gateway entry scheme for unsw based on living in a low socioeconomic area, but I'm finding it all quite confusing - if I apply through the gateway entry scheme, does that make me only eligible for the approx. 10 spots available through this scheme, and not the other approx. 188 standard applicant positions? And if so, in that case would it make more sense for me to apply as a standard applicant? As my ucat was quite high and I am also expecting quite a high atar, so I'm not sure if it's risky applying through gateway and limiting myself to only those 10 places, if that's how it works.

This question is difficult to answer since we don't know how UNSW Gateway works.

You should call UNSW Med to ask directly. Are Gateway applicants also eligible for a place in the standard pool?

If yes you should apply as Gateway.
If no you need to consider this factor : although Gateway has approx 10 spots vs ~140 non-rural spots, if you have high enough marks to be competitive in the standard pool it'd be even more outstanding in the Gateway pool. Which pool giving you better chances is the call you have to make.

I heard that UNSW sends interview offers to interstate applicants in January, due to timing of their ATAR release. But do gap year interstate applicants with an existing ATAR receive interview invites in the same time as NSW applicants which is in December? Thank you.

UNSW purposely schedules interstate interviews to late January for the reason applicants may receive their home-state offers mid-Jan. They'd be able to decide not to travel to the UNSW interview to save costs. So by default UNSW won't give you a December interview despite already having your ATAR.

However in a previous year a Vic applicant wrote to UNSW requesting a December interview since she did not do Chem to be eligible for Monash thus not waiting for a home-state offer. UNSW obliged. You can submit a similar request but need to have a decent reason.

How important is the Rural MAP direct medicine application 600 word statement on rurality:
Please provide a statement outlining your links with your local rural community and why you are suitable to apply through the Rural Entry Scheme.
I classify as MM3 and am interstate. Do they actually use this to assess my commitment to work as a doctor rurally or does it not matter as much? I'm really not sure how much time and effort I'm meant to be putting into writing this since I didn't even know I had to before working through the direct application (since the only thing they say about Rural Applicants on the website is that they must be eligible and classify as MM2-7 - it doesn't say any written application is accessed or necessary.) Please help!

It does matter but they don't see it as commitment (that's for the Bonded scheme). Rather they see it as more likelihood of you not aversed to working rurally in future.

Thank you! But they would assess my written application in response to that prompt to gauge how well I classify for the RES scheme right? So I should take the time and put in the effort into making it sound really good, right then?

The Federal government, being the funder, gave med schools directives to allocate a target percentage of places to rural-background applicants - based on studies showing they are more likely to work rurally (ie. it's not the schools' initiative).

I don't know in depth what the interviewers are instructed to look for in you. In my opinion their role is to assess how suitable you are (relative to other applicants) for doing medicine, not to assess how committed you are to working rurally as they are not qualified to.

Btw the UNSW written application itself is not assessed. The interviewers use it to know what to ask/discuss with you. What you say in the interview count and must not deviate from the written (clear signs of being coached afterwards).

Can NSW students (i.e local students) still be called in for an interview in 2nd round interview or is this strictly limited to 1st round? Additionally, if a student does receive a 1st round interview offer but does not receive a course offer in the 1st round, are they still considered for the 2nd round offers or is it game over...
