UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Hey guys,

With 99.4/3320 (99th) what are the chances of actually getting a second round interview offer at UNSW? If I do get a second round interview offer, will my UCAT be able to make up for the lower atar since its a 33/33/33 split?
I can't guarantee this is what UNSW is doing, but logically speaking - if a few 99.50s + 96ish %ile manage to rank post-interview high enough for an offer, UNSW might think hmmm.... a 99.40 + 99%ile could do a comparable interview to combine to high enough as well and invite you to the 2nd round. Then you have about 20-30% offer chance.

Otoh if the 99.50s end up needing 98-99%ile to be successful UNSW would say sorry your 99.40 is unlikely.

i received an email saying reconsideration for interview in Jan. Are there cases where they send an email with total "non eligibility". Just checking if i should have any hope. ATAR 99.01, UCAT 3070. GWS
Unless you have EAS, I'd unfortunately think it's very unlikely your score combo will get an interview in Jan. If you have other interviews, then time to move towards preparing for those and/or your back up degree plans. If you do end up with an invite, it'll be a nice surprise rather than something you should be expecting to happen.

Also, just double checking you're definitely talking about UNSW (as you mention you're GWS which is irrelevant for UNSW).

oh I am applying for EAS, which I hadn't done so previously as I had an issue with getting some of the necessary documentation, but i will lodge it before dec 26 - having applied for eas (and assuming i get it), would i be considered for january interviews? thank you so much for replying!
Unfortunately, if you are a local (i.e. in NSW), EAS applications might have closed already. :(

There might be a chance if you are interstate, though.

Probably best to contact UAC and UNSW before the Christmas holidays.

Yes UNSW. Sorry atar 99.10…. Not sure the reason behind email, whereas i did read in other threads with applicants 98.8 atar n higher ucat percentile with rejection email. Do you think or know if it happened in past? As is people with less than 99.5 atar receiving interview calls?
I have applied interstate and keeping fingers crossed for james cook uni… any pointers towards tht opportunity?? Thanks

I don't recall seeing in the past, however UNSW has a change this year.

> Local applicants

14-Dec-23Interview invitations are sent to selected NSW/ACT applicants, for the first interview round.
Applicants who have not been selected or who will be considered again for the second interview round will be e-mailed as well.
8-Jan-24Interview invitations are sent to selected interstate, overseas, IB applicants, and NSW/ACT non-rural applicants for
the January interview round.

When I saw this 2-3 months ago I was surprised why UNSW would include NSW applicants in the 2nd round (they didn't before). Now it looks like a purposeful arrangement as I speculated in my post above.

Have to wait/see whether your 99.10 will be high enough. Best of luck.

What would you estimate the chance of an offer for a standard applicant with an Atar of 99.65 and a Ucat of 3130(95th%)?

I'd say around 30-40% chance. Good luck.
What are the chances for a 99.50 and a 3070 ucat (93rd percentile)? I feel like I’m the lowest with an actual invite and that my chances are extremely slim of getting an offer.

In the past UNSW gave the lowest invitees just 5-10% chance. Now with the "artificial" 99.50 cutoff (ie. pre-excludes some 99.3-99.4s + high UCAT) I'd say you have 20-25% offer chance. Good luck.

Hi I help my nephew to ask questions. He is school leaver. Atar 99.90 ucat 92%. NSW. No any interview yet. Just wondering any chance to get 2nd round interviews? Thanks.
There's a possibility he could get a UNSW 2nd round interview, if the 1st round interviewees only perform moderately thus keep the place-offer cutoff within reach of 99.90+92%ile.

(The opposite is if they perform very well, the place-offer cutoff is so high UNSW would say sorry 99.90+92%ile is unlikely to be successful).

Hey people, I am ambivalent about my order of preferences, so I wanted to ask before the change of preference date. As a rural applicant I have received multiple interviews including CSU and UNSW. I was wondering which one I should place first (in the very hopeful case that I get both). I was immediately drawn to CSU as it is nearer to me and only 5 years compared to 6 for UNSW. However, I believe UNSW will be able to offer better equity scholarships as I am low SES and am not sure if I will be able to pay the higher yearly fee for CSU medicine. I think the equity scholarship in CSU is like $3000 and only 1 year, while UNSW is a much wealthier uni and the scholarships they list seem much bigger. I have not guaranteed any scholarships from the two yet but UNSW seems more promising as they are automatic (the equity ones) while the good scholarships that CSU offers must be competed for.
Anyhow I wanted to ask 1) if I get CSU in the first round am I still able to get a UNSW offer in the second round of January or is that only for non rural applicants?
2) does CSU even have a second round or is it filled up in the first round of January.
3) which course is harder, like since UNSW is a higher ranking uni and has more medical students does it affect how many students fail, or is that negligible?

It costs the unis around $60k a year to teach a med student while the student pays subsidised ~$11k HECS. Getting a place is like a $50k/year "scholarship" already, the other scholarship is a small bonus.

I don't think the tuition fees differ much between UNSW & CSU, and we usually ask the uni to charge it to a HECS loan (which we pay back when we start earning intern/JMO salary). So view the uni scholarship as to offset your living/studying costs. Which one will cost you more - likely UNSW since it's 6 years ie. an extra year of HECS fee + living expenses + loss of intern salary.

Hi all, aside from the fact UNSW use 1/3 each for ATAR, UCAT and interview performance to make place offers, is there any consensus on how the ATAR and UCAT thirds are actually calculated and weighted?

ie. since there seems to be an arbitrary 99.50 ATAR cutoff amongst interviewees, how does the 1/3 ATAR contribution work when comparing two applicants? There is only a wiggle room of 0.45, so if they're comparing say 99.50 and 99.95 on a scale from 0-99.95, the difference between the two would be negligible. The same could be said with UCAT percentiles, say the difference between 95th and 98th percentile. This suggests they have some other way of standardising each applicant's scores, right?

Yes, I once saw standardised scales mentioned in a UNSW webpage.

It's sometimes known as z-score. Plainly speaking it's like re-marking the interview cohort to : highest ATAR= 100 lowest ATAR= 0 and interpolate the rest in between, same for UCAT, same for interview. Then sum these three standardised marks for each applicant for the final ranking.

unsw is sending out 2nd round interview invitations today right? has anybody received an email from unsw?

havent heard anything yet, though received an email in dec saying my application will be re-considered for second round depending upon the rankings...

Hi is anyone struggling to book their interview...it says '504 gateway timeout' when I click on the link
I had this problem when I booked mine. It just means their servers are overloaded right now as so many people are trying to book. Just keep retrying.
