UQ UQ Medicine: Provisional Entry Questions and Discussion

Actually wait, a counter - example to this is the most recent MSO post for interview invites. They got a 93rd percentile and got an invite despite being non-rural.

However, they are QLD. I suspect that UQ and CQU are pulling a UAdel and favouring their own state.
Ahh, nah I was only speculating for CQU, but I have called for UQ and they have said lowest offered for non-rural was 3140

CQU and UQ have completely different cut-offs, their provisional entry programs are separate. UQ does not favour applicants in this state, idk if CQU does but it's possible.
Not sure about CQU but USQ surely does it.

Selection process

To the extent possible, an equal number of applicants (other than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants) will be selected to participate in MMIs from the following areas:

  1. Darling Downs and South West Queensland;
  2. areas classified MM 2 to MM 7 under the MMM classification; and
  3. any other applicants who wish to be considered.

Just regarding UQ provisional med. Their selection process for offers is 50% interview: 25% ATAR: 25% UCAT but most applicants would get a 99.95 selection rank due to the subject bonus scheme. Doesn't this make it near impossible for anyone who doesn't do the subjects under the bonus scheme and doesn't achieve a 99.95 unadjusted ATAR to get an offer? Even though ATAR is only weighted in 25%, if they weight it using standard deviations and medians then someone with even a 99.7 is going to be well below the median in terms of SDs, making it near impossible to overcome this even with a ridiculously good interview performance. I might be wrong or maybe they weight ATARs in a different way meaning the difference between a 99.7 and 99.95 is negligible, but if it is like this, isn't that pretty unfair - jeopardising chances of getting into med at 3 unis (as CQU and USQ also have the subject scheme from what ik) just because of this, what even is the point of inviting people for interview who don't happen to do those subjects under the bonus scheme?
Thanks for any insights or help!

Well from my QTAC thing, it says that they havent been processed yet and no one has reported getting interview offers so I assume they're released later than UQ and CQU
Would Usq have sent the invites the same time as well
It changed to selected for interview on qtac sometime this morning/last night, but they haven't sent an email or anything which is a bit weird. I assume that they will next week or sometime soon...

Because they invite people on the basis of UCAT only. Selection ranks aren't factored in because Year 12s have not sat their exams yet.
It's just how the university works, and whilst they could adopt a similar thing to UNSW (where they factor in ATAR and UCAT), but there might be logistical issues with that approach, or the Medicine faculty's selection philosophy just doesn't agree.

In a way, yes, it is "unfair" because it's quite literally a subject difference, I think it's more of a reward to those who have completed more difficult subjects than those who might get a high ATAR with less difficult subjects. Though difficulty is indeed subjective, the ones they award points for are those which are objectively designed to be harder. I.e. Extension 2 Maths and English are specifically called "Extension" for a reason.

However, I personally still disagree with Subject Incentive schemes, as they don't really help to improve diversity in Medical applicants to accommodate such an interpersonal profession. I see UQ's approach as a form of meritocracy, however there is a great emphasis on UCAT, which in their view, would select the most "able" for Medicine.

Maybe their booking system isn’t ready.
Asked through USQ live chat and they said they haven’t confirmed when the invites will be sent out but interviews will be held on 23-25 Nov.

This is very interesting - My sister got 3120 and no interview from UQ but she did receive an interview offer from UniSQ.

We are domestic in QLD!
Is she from Darling Towns/Southwest Queensland/Toowoomba or rural? Cuz UniSQ gives priority to those groups

I haven't seen domestic non-rural offers (QLD) from UQ yet tho. So don't worry

How many intakes are for UniSQ's Biomed/MD? Does that mean UQ's quota decreases further and therefore lifts the UCAT threshold from 93%ile to 96%ile this year? UQ had about 140 provisional positions before allocated 40 to the CQU last year. If they allocate further positions to UniSQ, how many are left for their Brisbane campus?

Would be interesting to know.
There are non rural interview offers from UQ in the 2023 data interview offers. They appear to have released all offers for UQ and CQU. This is the first documented offer from UniSQ

I think 20 USQ provisional entry places and UQ mentioned 135 UQ provisional entry places on open day but am not sure if that includes all UQ/CQU/USQ.
