UQ UQ Medicine: Provisional Entry Questions and Discussion

Is she from Darling Towns/Southwest Queensland/Toowoomba or rural? Cuz UniSQ gives priority to those groups

I haven't seen domestic non-rural offers (QLD) from UQ yet tho. So don't worry
Nah we live in Brisbane and are not rural!

Check the QTAC status and see if it says “selected for interview”.
USQ haven’t sent the invites out.
Hey! I Just re-checked my sister's application and it says "selected for interview" for UniSQ, Toowoomba Campus. BTW we are not rural.

How many intakes are for UniSQ's Biomed/MD? Does that mean UQ's quota decreases further and therefore lifts the UCAT threshold from 93%ile to 96%ile this year? UQ had about 140 provisional positions before allocated 40 to the CQU last year. If they allocate further positions to UniSQ, how many are left for their Brisbane campus?
apparently UQ still has 140 places - it is just that they are taking less interviews than last year (from memory 300 and smth interviews as opposed to usual 400+) hence the higher cut off.
Someone told me they called a UQ admissions guy, Paul, and this is what Paul said.

How to check the QTAC status? Not sure if I am at the right place or not, it says Processing of this information has not yet commenced

Yea my dad called the admissions at UQ and apparently they sent out 350ish interviews for like 150 or smth places

Hey just wondering have all the UQ interview invites come out or will more come out later on (like in other interview rounds if they have any)?

Also do they tell you if you have been rejected or not? if they do when does that email come

There is no rejection email. If you haven't gotten an interview, it is likely that you won't get an interview at uq, but there may be more invites after ATARs come out. With the low number of interviews this year there will be probably more than normal. I remember someone saying that for 2020 entry, there were 33 extra interviews after atar came out, so there might be 50 or more this year? We won't know any more until late December probably. I'd suggest looking into other options.

Just regarding UQ provisional med. Their selection process for offers is 50% interview: 25% ATAR: 25% UCAT but most applicants would get a 99.95 selection rank due to the subject bonus scheme. Doesn't this make it near impossible for anyone who doesn't do the subjects under the bonus scheme and doesn't achieve a 99.95 unadjusted ATAR to get an offer? Even though ATAR is only weighted in 25%, if they weight it using standard deviations and medians then someone with even a 99.7 is going to be well below the median in terms of SDs, making it near impossible to overcome this even with a ridiculously good interview performance. I might be wrong or maybe they weight ATARs in a different way meaning the difference between a 99.7 and 99.95 is negligible, but if it is like this, isn't that pretty unfair - jeopardising chances of getting into med at 3 unis (as CQU and USQ also have the subject scheme from what ik) just because of this, what even is the point of inviting people for interview who don't happen to do those subjects under the bonus scheme?
Thanks for any insights or help!
My family member had a UQ offer last year with a 96.25 NSW Atar, a 95% (or 96 I can’t remember) UCAT and no subject bonuses. So have hope! It’s not impossible 😀.

Oh wow ok. And they weren't rural or anything?
Sorry some more detail.

They live in Sydney. The offer was for a CSP place and their UCAT was 95%.

Not 100% sure but I think it may have been the second offer round for QLD students but it was first round for NSW students due to the delay in HSC exams and results. Towards the end of January.

Am in my final year of undergrad atm. Can any current 1st year md students (previous provisional entry) say how uq handles the transition to the next degree from your undergrad. Do you apply again for MD through the uni and enrol or is it an automatic switch where you just enrol in the first year MD courses?

Also how did you do all the first aid and cpr stuff?

Currently in 1st year. It's a bit messy due to the new MD program. The transition could've definitely been handled better but hopefully it does get better in future years. We're given 4 weeks of transition to MD (where we have more of a focus on learning strategies/assessments/introductions) which could've been condensed into 2 weeks. Then they go straight into offloading heavy content with only a few days to prep before the actual program starts. The good thing is that students are proactively giving feedback and the administration is trying its best to take it in and make it better.

With regards to the other questions, it's pretty much automatic, just need to enrol around Dec and also be prepared to choose preferences for what learning community (hospital + clinics) you want to go (Central is RBWH, South is PA, West is Mater, and North is Princes Charles Hosp). UQ does 1 or 2 Zoom meetings over the year to help with this so don't worry too much about that now.

First aid and CPR stuff can be done end of year. Both UQMS and UQPMS collab with some organisations (e.g. surf live saving QLD) and offer the courses at slightly cheaper prices.

Med Requirements

This is a link to other requirements you'll need to complete but they're not due until census date in Sem 1 for MD.

Lmk if you have any other questions.

In terms of applying its automatic. You get invited to a couple talks about what to do before the program but there really wasn't much too it.

I did my first aid and CPR through St John's. Was just a day-course and was pretty seamless. I would get on the vaccinations early because requirements are somewhat high -- like for example the varicella vaccine is two dose course but the immunisation schedule is only one. The school can be understanding (for example I got an extension on Hep B vaccinations because I am a non-responder)

Im currently second year of premed at uq. I had a look at the new md program and seems pretty interesting.
when we choose our learning community, does it stay as that for the whole 4 years of MD? or is just for year 1 and then it rotates? just curious so was wondering.

also, are some learning communities (north, south, west, central) 'better' than other ones? like is PA hospital better than Mater? maybe that's a dumb question but again, just curious :))
