UTAS Entry 2016 - Non-Standard

Well that does seem strange though for such a good overall UMAT. Are you from Tasmania or interstate? Also have you applied for other med schools?

Hi Jones, I'm WA standard applicant.
I'm not really bitter as I have got two other offers, just can't believe the way UTAS advised.

Yeah they're not overly transparent about their selection criteria from what I've seen. I hope you get an offer, and there's still time for one to come yet.

Hi Jones and A1P, I'm also yet to receive an offer - umat 97% (65, 71, 59) interstate, non-rural, met GPA requirement. Quite upset really because when I called noone could tell me why I haven't received an offer. I can't imagine it being my section 2 score since someone else received an offer with a S2 of 71.

There really doesn't seem to be any sort of pattern that I can see now if you've not received an offer yet. This is seeming very strange.

Have you logged on to the website as I heard that they don't email you with offers

I think a lot of places will free up once main round offers for other universities commence, hopefully, give us some places. UAC is the 20th Jan, VTAC should have just happened (2 pm today according to their website), SATAC is tomorrow (19th) and QTAC was on the 14th. People will hold offers for as long as they can, but the higher scores should receive offers for some of the more prestigious universities, then they will most likely decline UTAS offers. So after this week, hopefully, a wave of offers. I can tell you that majority of people I know who started med at UTAS last year got their offer two days before O-Week, one girl even got hers at the start of the second week of the term.

I got an unbonded offer from JMP UNE last night, so I'm really hoping that this will translate into an offer at UTAS, I dont really want to move again

All offers have gone out apparently, they are waiting for sufficient amount of people to reject their offers before making a second round. If they do, it should be sometime during the second week of feb (apparently), right before oweek

Hi there! Congratulations on getting accepted into UTAS med! I am currently a first year studying Dentistry interstate and since I've commenced a degree, am not eligible for quite a few unis (eg Monash, Adelaide). The main reason I am taking the UMAT is to get into UTAS. I have written to them and am yet to get a reply from them despite it being more than two weeks, and the person I talked to on the phone was really unsure. My main question is, according to the UTAS website, there are three ways of getting into med.

1. Guaranteed entry
The "Guaranteed Entry Scheme" will offer up to 20 school leavers the opportunity to study the Bachelor of Medical Research. If this degree is successfully completed in 3 years with a credit average (65%) they will gain guaranteed entry into the MBBS.

This option is something that you cannot apply for. You will be selected by the School of Medicine based on your application into the MBBS. They will consider applicants who have successfully achieved an ATAR of 90 or higher, a competitive UMAT score, and completed all pre-requisite subjects.

If you are successful, you will be notified in late January or early February of the year that you applied into.

2. Competitive entry
The "Competitive Entry Scheme" will give students the opportunity to apply for a place in the MBBS each year, if they have successfully completed the Bachelor of Medical Research and achieved a credit average (65%).

To be considered for one of these places, you will need to apply into the MBBS in your last year of studying the Bachelor of Medical Research. For now the important thing to remember is, if you are interested in this option put the Bachelor of Medical Resarch as your second preference when applying for MBBS.

3. Other pathways
Each year we will give MBBS entry to students who have studied one year full-time in one of the following degrees at the University of Tasmania

  • Bachelor of Biotechnology and Medical Research
  • Bachelor of Health Science
  • Bachelor of Biomedical Science
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy
  • Bachelor of Environmental Science
  • Bachelor of Exercise Science
To be considered for this option you will need to apply into the MBBS demonstrating a distinction average (70%) achievement in one of the degrees listed, a competitive UMAT score and completion of MBBS pre-requisite subjects. This option is not available to international applicants.

If you are interested in this option, you will need to put one of these degrees down as your second or third preference when applying for MBBS.

So as I do not meet any of this requirements, I just wanted to know whether I'll be considered at all for a place at UTAS. The website unfortunately did not mention transferring from a different university. Did most of you do some previous study in UTAS? Or did you come from a uni interstate? Thanks!

First the bad news, when you receive a reply it won't be from UTas Med but from their general Admissions Office, who gave me a misleading answer last year (they practically admitted to it, saying the reply was based on an FAQ from Med, which was out of date!)

Secondly UTas website is a collection of contradictory gems. From the page you've quoted
https://www.utas.edu.au/health/study/courses/bachelor-of-medicinebachelor-of-surgery

ATAR requirement for Y12s is 95.0 and Alternate pathways appear limited to UTas students only.

Yet in this FAQ updated 27/04/2016 ATAR requirement is 90.0
https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/1759/related/1

and this FAQ does not say you have to be UTas student
I am a tertiary applicant. What do I need to be considered for admission to the UTAS MBBS program?
https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/1761 (less than 3 semesters)
https://askus.utas.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/1760 (more than 3 semesters)

Hope this last bit brings good news for you.

A1, thank you for this information! Even having been a UTAS student for many, MANY years... I still find the website infuriating!

Dans, are you applying for 2017 Med at UTAS?
