JPM WSU/CSU JPM: Questions and Discussion

JPM does NOT look at ATAR to offer interviews. They look at UCAT using their wacky formula weighting Verbal Reasoning more than the other sections.

I better get started on UCAT prep then haha! Do you happen to know where the ATAR is taken into consideration?

Firstly... you should probably stop listening to people your hearing that information from - because you probably couldnt be more wrong about wsu. ATAR makes up 0% of the final selection process, its just a hurdle. Place offers are decided by either 75% UCAT + 25% Interview - or - 100% interview depending on what time of day it is (we have like 400 different stories from WSU so no-one really knows)

A 93.5 would meet the cutoff hurdle for WSU, and you would be on an equal playing field with all the other applicants.

I know that UNSW combines equal parts of the ATAR, UCAT, and interview but I've heard that WSU simply uses the ATAR to offer interviews and then doesn't take it into further consideration, is that right? as a GWS applicant if I was to get a 93.5 is it likely I would receive an offer? Not quite - WSU uses UCAT to determine who gets an interview offer. The ATAR is merely a threshold. As a GWS applicant if you get 93.5 + you will pass the threshold and it no longer has any effect on your application. The process is: Sit the UCAT > Interview invite based on UCAT > ATARs released and threshold determined > offer rank calculated on UCAT and Interview performance. So for the ATAR part you just need to get 93.5 or greater.

Here is last years. WSU uses a weird formula so the cut off isnt exactly linear - but due to the popularity of the program, and the heavily reliance on ucat, you generally have to do pretty well

EDIT: Also WSU is called Joint Program in Medicine due to their partnered delivery with CSU Orange - and the formula is only what we think it is, because once again, WSU is secretive about their selection

Based solely on last year: lectures aren't compulsory attendance except in special cases like the ones on indigenous health. These will be marked as mandatory attendance on the timetable, and will have a sign in sheet (or zoom attendance record). If in doubt about any particular lecture you can email the school admin people and they'll let you know. The pracs. PPD/MiC, Anatomy and ICM are compulsory attendance.

Lectures will all also be available online, and this obviously has the advantages of reviewing in your own study space and pause/double-speed on the bits you do/don't need to review more. The risk is it's easier to fall behind if you're watching at home - if you're not going to attend non-compulsory stuff F2F make sure you watch the video of it on basically the same day it was on.

That is super helpful thanks. I have also noticed that they have scheduled two PBL sessions. One on Monday and one on Friday. Do you know if these are both compulsory F2F?

Yes they will be, though F2F might be via zoom. Attendance is always taken in PBL and you have to show active participation in the sessions to pass.

Count PBL sessions in the anatomy, PPD etc group - you not only have to be present, you have to be enthused.

That said PBL is one of the best ways to revise disease states for the exams. Summarising your reading for the Friday presentations lodges it firmly in your mind, especially if your tutor is one of the ones who demands you explain any vague bits out loud to your peers!

That's really hard to know. It depends on the quality of the aplicants I'd imagine.

If you've got an opportunity to enter via rural pathway I'd take it, becuse you've definitely got a better chance to get in. They are far more generous with their ucat and ATAR hurdles.

15 at WSU, 30 at CSU (off the top of my head) get an offer, and a wsu rep said that for rural applicants there's approximately a 1:3 offer to interview ratio

Can't see the Year One vuws for 2021 but in the 2020 one it was under "Learning Modules 1H" which is the first tab in the "Learning Zone" section.

under 'Learning Modules 1H' i only see 2 folders: a folder for 'Lectures' which has the 2 modules content and then a folder for 'General Practice'. am i missing something? if any first years found the timetable, please let me know !
