Hey all,

I have a question and, while I have asked Auckland admissions, can't seem to get a clear answer. By putting it up here (sorry if it's been asked before) I thought I might get an answer...

I am in my 3rd year of a PhD in Medicine(Psychiatry) at UNSW in Sydney. I have done undergraduate Psychology, hence that is why they let me in to the PhD program without having done a Med degree first. I'm kinda doing this back to front, but anyway...

How would Auckland calculate my GPA having done a PhD over the past 3 years? Does it work in my favour? I read in their "FAQs" that Master's degrees and Honours are counted in the calculation, but it says nothing about PhD-GPA calculation. This is perhaps due to not being given grades as it is not a coursework degree, but some Master's degrees do the same (e.g. for the thesis component - which they say they count in the GPA calculation). Any ideas??

M

Hmm that's an interesting one. Who did you speak to in admissions? Has your PhD been full time? I assume you're finishing this year? Also, out of curiosity, how did you get PhD canditature without a Masters or some other kind of postgrad study?

Yeah... kinda interesting (if not somewhat annoying if it isn't held in some positive regard - probably should've done the Master's if only to get the grades). Corrin Quinlan at FMHS sent me a long email detailing admission criteria, but nothing was explicitly stated about the PhD. It's been full time for two years, and I went part-time this year due to work commitments (so 2 1/2 years so far). Planning on submitting by the census date so I won't be enrolled in 2011 (effectively this is my last year). I did also do a PGDipPsych and did OK in that. I have also published quite a bit of research so that helped with being admitted directly to the PhD. Still, I hope the PhD is counted :)

MH03 Form - Maybe a silly question

This may sound a bot silly  but the first question on the form is -
Please state briefly why you wish to undertake the medical programme. Please include any professional and personal experiences, and other personal attributes that you feel are relevant.

What is expected here - other personal attributes that you feel are relevant. Do they mean the applicants personal attributes or personal attributes that the applicant thinks are required for the medical profession?

Hey Kallu,

I think they mean personal attributes that you have that you feel are releveant to the degree. I put that I did tutoring and mentoring and what skills I felt I got from that that related to the profession.

Hope that helps :)

Makes sense, Tnx Emerald.

i clearly had a bad cop, by mid interview my eyes were boring into him and I said "fool, look at me!" (well I didn't actually say it, but you could see it in my eyes). and then i talked about stuff, and they listened, and i got into med. the end.

p.s. i might be helping out with interviews, mostly because there's free food i hear (and hopefully decent prowlage).

there is always free food of copious amounts haha

do the interviewees get said free food?

i sure as hell didnt get any last year. you'd probably get nauseated from the anxiety anyway (n)

I was always considering taking an anxiolytic before the interview (valium, B-blockers), never got around to trying that tho...

nothing like doing your interviewed when you are sedated with valium haha. Beta-blockers just make you feel sleepy. It's not as if you need your hands for anything so tremors are negligible :p

Haha, reminds me of the movie death at a funeral, where all those people get high off what they think is valium, anyone seen that?

Does anyone know the total number of spaces there will be in second year med next year at Auckland? I know its increased since last year.

Yes that's what I thought too, thanks g.walker.

I believe most of the additional spots are going to graduate students (?)
