If i remember correctly they will be increasing in increments of 20, so since this year was 205 spaces, next year I believe it'll be 225. I think last year was 191 (or was it 180?)
I hope that's true! At our admissions talk we were told there were 191 government funded places, and that grafton labs were big enough to only hold around 200 people...but maybe they just use the same powerpoint with all those details each year and haven't updated it. And yeah I read somewhere about the extra seats this year (I just wrongly assumed that was included in the 191), and also heard they all went to graduates.

Apparently next year all of the extra seats will go to Otago because Auckland is undergoing a 'rebuilding' process (whatever that means). "Next year, however, because of Auckland's building schedule, he anticipated no increase there and any extra would come to Otago." Check out this article:

https://www.odt.co.nz/on-campus/university-otago/102302/20-extra-student-doctors-expected

Keep in mind that that article was written in April so things might have changed since. Despite Auckland's extention building, the current med lecture theatre can hold 245 students (or so it says), and as for the labs.. well i guess they'll just split the class up into even more groups, as is their usual solution to everything. That or it'll just be even more crowded than it is this year

Yeah that seems to be Otago's solution... they're trying to move next year's second year class to 4 lab streams (up from 2) and 28 tutorial groups (up from 24). With the 80 spaces the government is making us add down here over 5 years the class will only just be able to fit into the lecture theatre... makes you wonder what's going to happen when the future government decides to increase places further.

Ken Scott is such a liar:

Him in lecture: 'So I won't ask you to draw any structures'
Me: 'Oh OK, sounds alright'

His exam question: 'Draw the structure of .....(any of the million structures in any of the reactions he taught us)'
Me: 'WTF!!!'

Can't wait for 106 to be over

OMG!! yes!!!!
i was so pissed wen i looked at the exam!! :@
its IMMPOSSIBLE!! i hate memorising things!! i rather understand the concepts!! but there are litrally NOOO concepts in his sto0opid lectures!
its pointless cuz i kno i'm going to forget everything once i walk out of the exam room neway... pointless... -.-

good luck guys and girls!
remember, biosci106 is not a core paper and you can do dismally in it as long as your average GPA is > B+

meanwhile I've finished exams for the year so 2 month summer here I come. STarting again on Jan 3rd bah

flick me PMs if anyone needs interview advice and jazz.
To those whom have emailed me MH03s to look at, I think i've looked at all of them. If I haven't got back to you, just let me know

Now I'm freaking out about MEDSCI. Especially the heart flow chart thing and the lungs calculations! Can't wait for it to all be over! I just got Civ5, I can't wait to actually have time to play it... as nerdy as that is :P

I've been playing civ 5 since the release date haha. Throughout my study I've been playing it muhaha. It's a great game. Very tactically challenging

Hehe, yeah I don't want to start it until I'm on break, otherwise I won't stop playing. I've seen my bf playing it and it looks really good. That social policy thing looks much better than the civics in Civ4. Gah and there's also Starcraft2 ! I'm gonna be busy these holidays :P

Anyway, this is a bit off-topic, sorry everyone! Good luck everyone for medsci and physics! Maybe we could start a separate thread for Auckland 2010 interviews? Would anyone want this? Perhaps the med students could give us some tips :)

Oh also, Lordgarlic, whatever happened to your blog? I was enjoying reading about MBChBII but then realised that your last post was in like 2007! Any plans on starting that back up again? I thought it was really interesting - i like finding out what you actually do once you get into the programme.

I stopped because I was too lazy to start blogging .Some of the other 2nd and 3rd years should start though. They are more than welcome to take over the blog if they wish

while u guys were sitting 106, i was in bed because im a retard
looks like im gonna get a GPA equivalent of 0 for 106...
That's a buggar! In semester one my mate missed his final 101 exam (thought it was the next day) but then went and talked to the course co-ordinator halfway through this semester. She said that if he had talked to her earlier they would have just given him a pass in the paper because his test 1 and lab marks were good enough...so you might wana get in touch with the course co-ordinator sometime? I do have a feeling that in the examination rules though you can't contact examiners before a certain amount of time...

well that's one way to shoot yourself in the foot. I suspect nothing can be done about this. Also because your GPA is 0 i think that may eliminate you from applying for medicine because you need to PASS all your year 1 courses

someone I know missed his POPLHLTH exam(thought it was the next day), went to the course coordinator and got an A- for the paper! (he got A+s for his incourse stuff though)

so don't lose hope! :)
I'm pretty sure there's a thing for 'special passes' on the examination website somewhere i read it the other day
