Congrats! You'll have no trouble. Was your GPA 8.4 in the end (taking your dissertation grade into account)?

just wondering if i could get some help brainstorming this question

so if the mapas scheme is to lessen the disparity between non-maori/pacific islander and maori&pacific islander which is more representative of the needs of the population, do you think it would be necessary to introduce a number of specific seats for each gender (since there are alot more females entering the medical profession than males)
also, what about schemes for every ethnic minority group?
i was thinking about socio-economic position and equal access to education/income.. are there any other ethnicities besides maori and pacific islanders where huge disparities in housing etc is seen?

lastly, is nz bicultural (as stated in treaty) or multicultural?
do we have more responsibility to treat diseases associated with maori/pacific islanders (CVD etc) because of the treaty, than the diseases the asian population face?

we view ourselves as a multicultural society. The MAPAS scheme aims to address the more glaring disparities in health which is beyond the Maori and Pacific Islander populations in New Zealand. Other ethnic groups as far as I'm aware have nowhere near as glaring health disparities

there is no need for any gender or other ethnic quotas because there is no evidence at all that this would improve the quality of doctors or the healthcare system as a whole. the current status quo is adequate for that and we get a multicultral mix in medical school classes as a result anyways. If you look at socioeconomic disparity as you suggest, the majority of the more SE deprived individuals are actually Maori or Pacific Islander; again addressed by this theme

I've heard that undergrad interviews are today, tues and weds and grad interviews are on thurs, with grad offers going out today. Good luck!

Just curious, any other grad students got an interview offer yet? My gpa is 7.1 is that to low for a interview?

My GPA is 8.1 and I haven't had one yet.. I am going to call them today to see whether they've finished sending grad offers.....I'm sick of wondering......There is another grad on this site with 8.4 that has an offer.

Last year the cut off for interviews was 7.0. It might be higher this year or not??? So you may be close to the cut off. I'll report back once I get to talk to someone....

ness - is that reliable info?

Not sure how reliable, one of those heard from a friend tidbits of info so could be pure conjecture :S I think I tend to believe anything now just to have something to go off, if you get what I mean!

The official timetable says that interviews are still going next Monday 13 Dec...so possibly be that grads are spread out of those last days?

If anyone has anything more solid please let us know! I think the suspense is giving me a stomach ulcer.

My friend with a gpa of about 8 got an interview for thursday... I'm still eagerly checking my inbox as my gpa is just above 7. Meep.

well the GPA cut off last year for both graduate and OLY1 was 7.5 I believe. Frankly I don't think it would go any lower. Initially last year it was around 7.75 but they offered more interviews to drop it down to 7.5

Earlier in the year, the admissions office told me that although the interview cut off varies from year to year, for 2010 intake, the graduate category interview cut-off was 7.0 but the GPA threshold is trending upwards.

Sorry to disagree- but just dug out the grad letter from last year (a friend applied and didn't get an interview & brought the letter around here in a huff for some consolation drinks!!!) it says the interview cut off for grads was 7.0. I don't know what the reality was as far as whether all grads with a 7.0 or 7.1 were actually interviewed, but the officially advertised cut off was 7.0.

I don't understand quite what's going on then???? I tried calling, but can't get hold of anyone......

@ness - have you worked out how your GPA will be calculated?

yup cut offs were definitely 7 for grads last year!!! Looking around these threads, apparently the lowest gpa for a grad to be admitted was 7.2ish. It's difficult for us grads to keep up with the crazy gpas of the undergrads!

Well, theoretically we don't have to. The uni has made the quota system more transparent in recent years & freely advertises the fact that grads are only compared against one another. The problem is, I think as more great students miss out on entry after OLY1, they work their asses off for 2 more years and achieve excellent results with med in mind the whole time.

I might be wrong, but back when I first went to uni grad med applicants often applied as a bit of an afterthought or sometimes just for fun. But I think what we're seeing now, is OLY1 students, totally focussed on grad med entry. I worked really really hard for my 8ish GPA & felt like I couldn't of done much more. So I am always floored when I see people getting 8.5's - especially when those people were the same people that missed out in OLY1 - because it really is a stunning effort & points to a very clever individual & I wonder how they ever missed out in the first place!!
