The people that I know who have got interviews are all from auckland with high GPAs so far. However, there's this girl from my class with a decent GPA (in 8's) from auckland who still hasnt got an offer. It's just really weird. You never really know what's going on.

Oh, good for you! You must be glad it's over! If they didn't bring up your MHO3 did they ask you all the standard questions to steer the interview?

There weren't any crazy random questions, but I did get asked a lot about the NZ medical system. I'm not gonna post any questions yet (so people who have already had their interviews aren't disadvantaged) but all I can say is the interviewers are friendly and not trying to 'catch you out'.

I am glad it's over, but now that I've had some time to think about it, I'm not happy with a lot of my responses. I was feeling pretty confident before but now I'm like ...arrgghh that didn't go so well.

I can say i literally went thru EXACTLY the same range of emotions following my OLY1 interview. But then i ended up getting 9/10 in the interview, so don't let over-thinking the situation get to you. Sounds like you did fine ;)

Weird interview at Auckland

Hi guys, I'm a biomed student and med hopeful and I just had my interview for medicine yesterday.

But it was a weird interview. There were the usual questions but none of the others
What should I make of it? The interview turned into a conversation and away from med, so I am unsure as to what to make of my interview.

All the best of luck to any Auckland med students having interviews this week

Is your friend also in Welly?

Do you think they offer interviews to high GPA's from other uni's & keep all the Aucklanders to one side, knowing they have less travel etc to organise??? Ahhh I don't know....pure conjecture...

No he's in Auckland, and so am I. This is really interesting. You would think that australians would get their offers earlier, cause they have to fly international. How much earlier are these interviews than previous years? From what I recall, my OLY interview was on Dec 8th and I got an email on the 2nd.

Thanks, I hope you're right!

I'd like to say thanks to the medical students who volunteered to wait with us in the waiting room. It was so relaxing, I felt much better after sitting in there for 20mins!

It's a semistructured interview, which means the interviewers ask basically whatever they want to assess the attributes they want to know about you within guidelines.

how do you know that you got 9/10?

Obviously I can't speak for him, but I know that if you miss out you can get feedback from the university as to why and what you could improve should you choose to apply again. I know several students who went in for a face to face meeting with admissions about this. You can find out your interview score (if you are unsuccessful at entry). Another related point is that, if I remember correctly, they have changed the interview scoring/scaling now. I think this thread has more details about that.

@ness - nah, no email for me. Tanya said they'd be coming out "tonight". But I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't come out tonight either. You can call her on 923 2761 if you want to confirm your own situation. She didn't seem surprised when I called! She does nursing and pharm but is covering for Michelle who is busy with interview stuff.

more on this point is that they mainly wanted to make sure you are able to have a conversation normally and not here because you are ultra smart/good at studying to get the top grades required but don't have the "people skills" necessary for the profession. fingers crossed for when offers come out on the 23rd! =)

Its common for unis to do this. They test your skills and attributes through hobbies etc. Most questions have a reason behind it. So I wouldnt worry about it. Good luck!

And I talked to another guy and he basically was asked none of the "why do you want to do med" nothing on current affairs or stuff like that, which seemed oddly like my interview

Relax. Don't worry about it. Once you leave that room there's nothing you can do about it anymore. Your application to med school is over. Enjoy your summer.

Well then its normal then. Enjoy your holidays.

Btw: Please don't triple post, just edit the first one and add stuff to it. Thanks.

My interview was mostly on NZ health system and ethics... they didn't even ask me why I wanted to do medicine!

Hopefully it went well, it's so hard to tell and I keep thinking of better answers to the questions they asked me now! Oh well, like everyone said - it's over now, let's try and enjoy the summer.
