I cannot get over the crazy Pop111 results. I was quizzes so thoroughly and knew the definitions etc back to front. How could the multichoice throw me off that badly?
Chem much better result.
How did anyone else find BioSci?

Also, is there anyone who knows what the Population 101 test is like? AND ... while I am putting all these questions out there .... is the second Population 111 test multichoice also or short answer?
Fanks a million

Welcome to MSO, Favour! I'm so glad our member numbers are gradually climbing as well

In my opinion, the BIOSCIs didn't leave me with a great feeling afterwards, but we'll just have to see when the results come out.
How did you find them?

By the way, I'm presuming you are taking biomed? Did you mean the two bioscis or just 107?

is the second Population 111 test multichoice also or short answer?

The second POPLHLTH 111 should be multiple choice as well, with the exam being both.

Almost wish I was biomed:) Health Science..... so just 107. I friggin hate mutli choice! Any clues anyone how to get better at those types of tests?

Haha XP

Well, ok, I like multiple choice. Learning to like it wouldn't be a bad start. That way, you can approach them like a familiar friend. Or something.

Anyway, my advice is to get as familiar with the concepts as you can (which you did mention something along the lines of) and then approach each question WITHOUT looking at the options first. Just a few seconds to let your brain mull over the possibilities... The take a hard look. If your first choice is there, trust your instincts, as long as you don't have any flawed misconceptions, you should be fine ^_^

They love doing little tricks, remember? And if you know the content like you know the back of your hand or whatever, then you should be able to rule out those at once. Your gut will be warning you: "No, that can't be right!" (Haha, that's what it did to me in the test :p)

The thing to remember is that if you are unsure about certain options, use the good 'ole process of elimination to rule out the ones you know are incorrect. Then take a stab (along with a dose of luck) at it by guessing with confidence. :D (50% chance of winning = pretty favourable odds, if I do say so myself)

Well, I hope to have given you some tips on how to tackle those MCQs... But to get better at them... that's a skill I wanna know too, haha! Gee, was my rant for nothing?

By the way, is POPLHLTH 101 similar to 111 in terms of the first test? Or have you not had a test/exam yet? (Hence the question?)
And what's Health Science like for you? ^_^

OMG, i just found out my results.
pop is fine i guess but my chem result is really bad!! really have to do well in the 2nd one!!!

PS: agree that 101 is harder than 107!!

Hey Hopefully,

Not a rant ... great advice. I guess I need to know it backwards and forwards several times over:)

Health Science is great. I like the balance of the science and the population health aspect. Pop 101 about health systems is pretty interesting as you go on. Makes you realise just how difficult it is to navigate the bureaucratic maze as well as attempt to deliver health care on limited budgets etc etc etc .... could give a lecture on it. Def do not want to end up in the health management side of things that's for sure and deep respect for those that battle it out for the rest of us:)

Haven't sat the 101 test yet....but know its multichoice:P lucky me!!!

How's BioMed?

And do we know how likely we are to get in if our GPA is more like an 8?????

Hey Favour,

Yeah, pretty much! But now that we don't have our GATE notes as the main thing for Module 2 onwards, I wonder how we should approach studying for POPLHLTH? The slides?

Thanks for sharing your Health Science stories haha. You guys are a rarity! (But that makes it a good thing though.)
Hmm, it sounds almost like a political game with health aspects incorporated into it (in the loosest sense, that is) ;)
Realllllly lucky that it's multiple choice! Somehow POPLHLTH + MCQs = awesome mix, in my opinion.
Oh yeah, hope your assignment went well. Must be refreshing in the midst of tests upon tests (almost makes me miss them, but not quite) ^_^

Biomed is truly another experience altogether. I'm loving it wayyyyy more than high school: so much more interesting, relevant (yeah, I know, but it feels like it), and I just wouldn't swap it for any other degree apart from the MBChB (heh :p)
However, BIOSCI 101 is, I would say, the least interesting out of the 4 papers I'm doing this year (you know about the rest) because it's just mostly Year 13 with more breadth and depth. Still, I'm way more inclined towards 107 - it's amazing! What do you think?

Do you mean an overall GPA of 8? Or a GPA of 8 from our core/core + non-core papers?
In my honest opinion, a GPA of 8 from your core papers alone (which is still equivalent to an A) should give you an interview.* But from the information on MSO, it seems that a GPA of at least 8.25-8.5 is potentially better...however with that said, it is all relative to what this year's cohort is like, because they will rank you against others. In terms of how likely we are to get in if our GPA is an 8 overall, I truthfully don't know.

*This is a shaky bit of information that I'm giving. Don't trust me explicitly on this because I'm not quite sure myself... -_-

Anyone (especially those who got in), feel free to correct me if my facts are a little vague.

Thanks :)

All one can do is do your best. With three kids in tow always a bit of a challenge. At least homework time at home is conducive to study:)

You're welcome any time ^_^

Wow, I admire your diligence...and having 3 kids in tow must be tough. (Well, I don't know this from personal experience but my mum has to deal with that haha, just not with the additional uni degree to work towards as well.)

I'm sure that with the sight of you studying at home alongside your kids will be sure to inspire them to do their best too! (yy)[/OFFTOPIC]

Does anyone here know whether UMAT results are valid for 2 years or have they changed it so that it's only valid for 1 year? i.e. a friend of mine wants to do med at Auckland in 2014, but will be doing biomed OLY1 next year (2013), so is it OK to sit UMAT this year (2012) and use the result to apply for medicine? Or do they have to sit UMAT in 2013?

Thanks in advance!

A quick read of the UMAT information handbook by ACER answers your question.

From 2012 UMAT scores can be used for admission to any of the UMAT Consortium universities ONLY in the year following the test

What this means is that if your friend wishes to enter Medicine in 2014 he or she will be required to sit UMAT next year and this is the only opportunity they will have. The "two year window" rule has been changed from this year.

Registration for UMAT 2012 is still open until June and UMAT is only two hundred bucks so if your friend is really serious about it I suggest they complete UMAT 2012 as a test run (as several people here are planning to do).

Also explicitly note that ACER specifically states intensive preparation for UMAT is not advisable or required; you get one UMAT practice book when you register and the other is like $20; if your friend wants to do well they should use the official resources (and the other free questions on this forum) and not, not, not spend hundreds of dollars on a "preparation" course.

Should the desire arise however, they are most welcome to give me several hundred dollars and I will "prepare" them for UMAT by giving them the official preparation materials and promptly going to the Sky City casino and spending the rest of their money on the blackjack or roulette tables; the latter of which will be about as helpful as a "prep" course.

plm8123 - Yup, we got an email (i.e. OLYers taking poplhlth 111) about this regarding UMAT.The results are only valid for one year from 2012 (i.e. this year). And it also said something along the lines of 'prep courses are not advised by the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences', and they implied that it was frowned upon (not that they would know...but just putting it out there).

Rotors - The additional Test 2 is now AU$35. It sure has risen, huh.

I wasn't sure of the exact number so I was sort of close but yes the price seems to have increased but the spending of eighty thousand dollars on one's medical degree kind of makes $20 pale into insignificance ...
