Seriously dislike people who get high as GPA and say they're ruined... I know at 3 people who got in with 7.5 GPA and 50-70% percentile UMAT for any people who are worried that their GPA is low.

Would there be any objections to attempting to do for Auckland what we've done for Otago? ie: Come up with some kind of 'rank score' formula (which shouldn't be too hard, we know the weightings Auckland uses), and then make a thread where people can post their scores and offer status, then (hopefully) work out a cut-off from there?
This could, if it worked (ie: If we got enough participants) solve a lot of this 'Oh God I got a GPA of only 8.9 I'm so screwed' stuff.

Fair call haha, but I don't believe many people with those GPAs actually get in. It seems to me that mainly people with 8.75-9 make it in to med school, hence I'm worried

This is just plainly not true. I know plenty of people in my year that got in with 8.25. P-L-E-N-T-Y. I also know a fair few people who got in with less than that.

The auckland "rank score" formula is pretty simple, interview places are determined by the GPA attained in the 4 common core papers shared by BSc and BHSc, namely Poplhlth 111, Biosci 107, Chem 110 & Medsci 142......therefore core GPAs are attained in factors of 0.25. (sorry if this is stating the obvious)
I also will politely add to addressing the misconception that med students are mainly made out 8.75/9 OLY1 core GPAs. As 4everAlone has stated, this is simply not true.

^Plus there are too many med students to even justify an average of 8.75-9. Even for standard entry.

Only a few people are allowed A+'s each semester.

I highly doubt that, what's your situation?

Good Memory! I got an A- in Medsci, which gives me a 7.75 core. I couldn't believe that I got an A-, especially after I got above 90% for semester tests and Lab marks. I must have really really really screwed up the final exam, even after I studied hard for it. I know every year that some people with average GPAs get in with a stellar interview, but it's a big what-if. I just need to put it behind me and focus on acing the interview.

To make things worse I got an A+ on Physics, which I never did at high school. Perhaps the exam office got the medsci and physics results mixed up.....

haha funny u should say that becuase I got an A+ for my gen ed which i barely studied for, and an A for medsci which I put a huge amount of effort into the whole semester and tried to learn everything

ditto to that, A+ for my gen ed Econ......which i truthfully did not study for...... <_<

The issue with all these A+/90%tile UMAT/average interview rejections is in terms of their actual validity. I think it's important to acknowledge that this is a forum after all, and that you should never underestimate the tendency for people to lie (not that im accusing anyone) about information pertaining to their grades (online or in real life). You'll be amazed at how frequently people will "up" their interview score or gpa so they don't feel like they are representing themselves as inadequate. Accordingly, I also feel you shouldn't become disheartened at the same time. It seems highly unlikely that you're going to get rejected by having a near 9 gpa and 90%tile umat and a score around 7-8 for mathematical reasons...

thanks :) its reassuring knowing other people have been in my position before. But I've heard of people getting 8.5 with 90+ in umat and still not getting in with a 7/10 interview! By average do u mean 8+ for the interview?
Hope to see u on the day too :)

Average I meant a 7, but that was in my year.
I was waitlisted in first year with a 6/10 score for interview, and did not make it in the end. EVERYONE else that had the same GPA/UMAT score as me got in, but I didn't.
I can't stress how important interviews are for undergrads, just go hard one last time and put every effort into it
Oh and pray that you get nice interviewers, I believe it is a matter of luck to get into Auckland, really it is.
That's what I tell everyone that asks me how I got in, you just have to be lucky and do your best

I can't say I completely agree that it is just a matter of luck to get in... The interviewers are looking for specific criteria in a candidate and every interviewer will have a "guideline" to help direct their selection which is a highly regulated process. The only element of luck which may be involved is the difference in personalities of the interviewers, which if they are good interviewers, shouldn't be a factor at all. As for getting the required GPA and UMAT for an interview, luck is definitely not a major factor.

The element of luck which I was speaking about relates to after being selected for an interview. This is my own opinion, and being a candidate in 1st year that got to experience 2 different sets of interviewers, that formed the majority of my judgement. Sure there are guidelines and things, but it does not overcome the slightest subjectivity. I can say alot more to elaborate but I shall not include that in this discussion thread. Med school will definitely try its best to ensure everything is fair, but that doesn't mean there aren't minor mishaps and things. I would still encourage undergrads to give their 110% at the interview.

Undergrads? Don't you mean everyone? I don't think the route in is any easier or less luck-prone for grad applicants.
Oops yes sorry, I meant everyone, both grads and undergrads :) I thought this thread was for the OLY1 students so less likely grads would be here but anyhow, goodluck to EVERYONE going for interviews! Not too long to go now

What year did you apply for med? And if you don't mind me asking, what was your core gpa and umat?

i feel its best we forget grades and focus on the interview now .. no point walking into the interview room feeling as if we can't get a place in med. that being said, i'm starting to feel pretty nervous about the whole thing tbh
