Thanks toaster, you made my day.
The headache's gotten better and i went to the chem tutorial today. Some people there asked really basic questions. I thought it'd be some kind of lecture-like tutorials where they would give us some hints etc on the test but since i didn't have anything particular to ask so here i am back in my room.
Guess I shall get some study done while my brain is still awake.
Enjoy the last few days of your break:)

My hint for the test would be to look at the past test papers, they almost always take the same format, and have similar questions.

The last few days of my break will most probably be spent panicking about my upcoming musculoskeletal test... Any tips Lord Garlic?

is the format still the same as when I did it in 07? as in half MCQ/half SAQ?

or purely MCQ now?

The first musculoskeletal test will be a complete shock to you. There is no denying that it will happen. Huge jump from stage 1 papers. In terms of what to focus on, those lovely blue clinical boxes in moores are a good start. Don't fuss too much about precise origin and insertions. Vaguely know what region things come from. If you know that, you can usually figure out the acting of the muscle but picture it working in your mind. Use the MSLC models if you can.

Known about the arteries of the lower limb (i think that's first half MSS) and also the nerve roots involved in reflexes. i.e. ankle reflex is S1 (depending on what book you read though. don't remember phil's notes). Other things involve that silly myotome dance (L2/L3 for hip flexion, L3/L4 for knee ext [i.e. femoral nerve] etc)

I have a nerve map lying around on my computer, whizz me a PM with your email and i'll send it to you

Hey lorgarlic. Is the first MBCHB203 test similar to the exam? It looks like a lot of drawing and labelling especially cross-section diagrams.

We haven't been given any information about the structure of the test yet. I heard like half the class failed the first 203 test last year X_X

our 209 test is coming up and its purely multichoice. Got any tips and comments about it too?

It was sort of like the exam when I had my 203 exam. But I heard they changed it last year to mostly multiple choice or something so I'm not sure anymore!

209 is nothing to worry about. It really isn't that hard, all MCQ!

Just did the chem test! It wasn't that bad lol. How long does it usually take for the results to come back? Our BIOSCI 107 marks haven't come out yet...I heard the POHLTH101 marks were out and they did the test a day after us. Hope the test for you guys all went well

Expect the chem test results to be out around Wednesday...they are always REALLY quick marking them. Bio tests are always slow, they take from a few weeks to a month from what I remember.

Just another question. You know at the end of the year when they grade our results and decide who get into med. Do they rank marks for each paper? Like for example person X got 85% and person Y got 99% for BIOSCI107, both of them got 100% for the rest of their core papers. Does person Y have a higher chance of getting in? Also does the same thing apply for getting the interview as well?

And do we get our test papers back for chem and bio107? I saw some people in our year looking through tests that people did last year. It would be helpful to know what i did wrong, then again it can be frustrating if there were some careless mistakes lol.

Its only your GPA that counts, so it doesn't matter whether you get all 100s or get the lowest possible A+ mark. So in terms of GPA, both those people would be equal in ranking. I don't know what happens if person X and person Y, are tied for the very last place into med, maybe they look at marks then? But probably more likely to look at the interview, to decide.

To get into interview I think they are alot more flexible, because it doesn't really matter if they interview a few extra people who are tied in terms of GPA. But theres only so many places in med, so there must be some way they can decide in event of tie.

In terms of interview marking, its very murky and no-one really knows. From what I heard, from people who didn't get into med asking the faculty why they didn't, you are given a score out of 10 now. Before they used to grade you on a system that made the interview worth alot more than the 25% weighting suggests. Again, these are just things I hear...I don't know for sure.

Apparently in terms of general entry, last year the minimum GPA to get in was 8.5, and to get in with an 8.5, you needed a interview score of 9/10.

You do get your scripts back. I think you get given your chem test back at your next lab, and you can collect your bio tests too from the biology students centre.

Thanks toaster! So its 2xA+ and 2xA plus an awesome interview. Pressure...
And just out of curiocity, did anyone get an auto-in (from the interview) last year?

.

I don't think the situation is THAT bad. I think it's GPA 8.5 + average interview mark OR 9/10 in the interview. Very few people if any get over 8 in the interview (old 4/5).

Its what I heard from someone who heard from someone who asked, so it could be quite unreliable...probably exaggerated each time it is told to someone else.

Yeah I'm pretty sure theres someone who got auto-entry, though you can never be sure because I dont think they actually tell the person they got auto-entry. You could probably find out though because they give you your interview score if you ask.

I couldn't be bothered asking about mine, though I'd be interested to know. Skyglow should be happy about that, he doesn't need to make good on his bet, that he would go without internet for a week, if I didn't get auto-entry.

Lol I'm being nosy now, do you and skyglow know each other? Did you guys go to same high school or something? Oh and you don't have to tell me, mmm.... a bit curious though since you guys seem to refer to each other from time to time lol.

A question on chem labs. They give us numbers out of 6 for each lab (instead of grades or marks). Do you know how to convert the number to actual weighting? Is it 1=A+/A, 2=A-/B+, and so on? Apparently it's really hard to get a 1 (nobody i know have gotten that so far).

I know skyglow from high school. I found mso, and because skyglow wasn't competing for the same med places, I told him about this awesome new website I found.

I really don't know how they exactly derive your mark at the end of the year. But I think what happens is that based on the lab marks you've been given, every chem student is ranked, and then somehow an overall mark is then assigned based on that. Last year I got like half 1s and half 2s, and ended up with 16/17 or something like that.

To do the best in chem labs, what I would suggest is understand the instructions before you go in, and do as many of the questions as possible, or work out how you would work out that question, so you can concentrate as much on the prac component as possible.

You've got to do what you've got to do to get into med haha. I did end up sharing the information I found out on mso with other auckland people anyway, even if I didnt tell them about the website, so its not like I'm a horrible selfish person haha. And now I am imparting all I know to others, well, pretty much just Leafie, unless theres lots of lurkers out there.

Lol i also told most of the stuffs i learned here to other people as well. Still can't bring myself to tell anybody about this site yet, mainly because the competition is freaking intense, also since i'm the only one from auckland who actually asks questions here it will be easy to identify me (I don't want people to know who's Liefie yet, not before i got into med :lols:... if i can get in:(
