hey guys

i am year 13 and going into BHSc at auckland with the hope of getting into med. only thing is that i have had a bad timetable and made some bad decisions and only have done IGCSE chem, but doing a2 bio. I can try and do AS chem this year, but that will get really messy for me.

So I just want to know is it worth it trying to do chem 150 in 1st semester or prep. chem (in the holidays), before i do chem 110? Or should I be fine going straight in chem 110, or do i really need to take AS chem?

thanks for your help

definitely need AT LEAST AS level chemistry or all the lectures will seem like gobbledey gook to you. Biology on the other hand you can easily do without

Much in agreement with LordGarlic, Chem 110 dives right into the deep stuff, IGCSE level chem will provide you with little to no background. I can't say how good the foundation courses are, but difficulty will be significantly greater without something equivalent to AS level.

[OFFTOPIC]Freshers was awesome! [/OFFTOPIC]

Ummmm none. They're all rubbish ^_^

Daim, did you guys see the schedule? that is seriously one messed up timetable.

also i find it kinda lame how AUMSA is hosting the 'medschool 101' on the 8th, one week to late there...

@g.walker : Just looking at it now. i was expecting something packed and without regularity. but wow. that was a shocker. Just can't wait until the lab groups come out. at least then, i can forget about some of those blocks.

Those 502xyz numbers are room numbers right ? building 502, floor x , room yz ?

Also. must note "Draft" , anyone want to take a guess as to how many revisions will be made before its finalized ?

never finalized. The med school is notorious for lecturers not turning then reschedulling the lecture to 4-5pm or 5pm-6pm the next day or something moronic

Hey guys

What sort of stationary (i.e. books etc) would you recommend getting for this year? I don't want to get anything I wont use/is a hindrance. Cant wait for my first day of orientation tomorrow!!(yy)

Cheers

Edit: Also, it is useful to bring a laptop for biomed?

Other than textbooks, i found that the only things i used were those 200 leaf maxi pads, and a ring binder. Together with the course guides, i think it was enough. other than that, just a good pen (that wont run out midway through 107) and possibly a voice recorder.

In addition, it would be a good idea to have a set of highlighters (or possible colouring pencils) these will be good for biosci107 and medsci142 where some colouring may be involved. (Professor Colin Quilter retired, so there might be less this year, i don't know)

You'll also need a lab book in semester 2 physics (if you are taking biomed), i think its just a 2B8 or 1B8.

I know a few people took net-books, but personally, i wasn't into using laptops during lectures. Did bring it in from time to time, when looming exams meant that IC computers were all taken.

Hope you enjoy orientation ! Don't forget to sign up with AUSA and get some free stuff.

Thanks :). Srry, but when you say textbooks, does that mean you brought your prescribed text books to each lecture??

Cheers

I think it's best to leave the prescribed textbooks in your locker and/or at home. Some of those books are pretty big, and you'll be busy enough writing notes in your coursebook while listening to the lecturer.

There's also textbooks available for 2-hour loan at Short Loan (Kate Edger Info. Commons).

Apologies for the lack of clarity, but lambchops was correct. I kept textbooks at home. And used shortloan while at uni for most of the year. But during exam times, it's probably best to bring your own if you plan to study at university.

Oooo... It appears the new Auckland board has appeared under "Medicine". Anyone care to start in it ? And maybe save this one for undergrads ?

Thanks Shizzy (and/or other admins) for implementing it.

Hey guys, i am trying to enrol into a gen ed course for semester 2. Unfortunately, eco151 is full, no more can go in. Are there any other courses that are suggestable to achieve good marks in. I was thinking marketing or compsci, but I just wanted to see what you'se think.

I did INTBUS151G and found it pretty OK, though ECON151G seems to be easier across the board. I heard MKTG151G is pretty decent as well.

I'd suggest you do something that seems interesting, since your your gen ed paper isn't one of the 4 core papers they rank you on. Alternatively, you could check out past exam papers and hunt down the 'easiest' papers to do.

Why do you guys get a new user bar??!!!

[offtopic]Cuz we special!

Hah, we actually didn't have one before but you guys did (the one that all Otagos use); Naturica made his/her own I think (pretty slick one you got there N)[/offtopic]
