Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

So I found this. I passed CHEM191 in the university of otago (Uni Otago on that sheet), does that mean I meet the chemistry part of the requirement for UQ dent?

Yep! Your QTAC application should show that the chemistry requirement has been met once they've assessed it, too.

Do we know when QTAC will assess if we've met the requirement? Because I'm not too sure if I met the English requirements for UQ dent.
For level 3 English NCEA, I have 4 credits at excellence, 7 at merit and 7 at achieved.

They should do it after the applications have closed; and you cannot really predict it. Best bet is to contact UQ and ask if your english qualification meet the requirement or not. That would save you the stress :)

I've just found this on the undergraduate application page for UQ,

I'm curious as to whether this applies to Dentistry. Given that UCAT is already a differentiator, and which of the UCAT or raw atars would be used first to differentiate the applicants.
  • applicants who achieve an ATAR or selection rank of 99.00 or above without adjustments will be considered before applicants who achieve a selection rank of 99.00 or above after adjustments are added.
Should this concern me as I am looking to achieve a 97 atar and use 2 LOTE points to meet the 99 threshold?

Yes.

So pretty much bonus points are irrelevant now, because there are an excess of students with raw selection ranks at/above 99.

Well it depends if they use it before or after the ucat.

If they use it after the ucat, it will only differentiate applicants with the same ucat score.

If they use it before the ucat, it will pretty much render the bonus points useless.

I looked up the quote, and here is the full list. If you consider that these measures 'might include' and its listed after the ucat, means im not really sure if its the former or latter.

Applicants with the same entry score

There may be more applicants with the same ATAR or selection rank than there are places available in a program.

In these circumstances, we choose between applicants by using more detailed measures within each ATAR or selection rank. These measures might include:
  • the aggregate of the first 4 section scores in the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) (for entry into certain programs)
  • Section 5 and section 1 UCAT scores (where applicants have the same UCAT aggregate score)
  • further breakdown of an applicant's GPA (for selection ranks based on tertiary study)
  • applicants who achieve an ATAR or selection rank of 99.00 or above without adjustments will be considered before applicants who achieve a selection rank of 99.00 or above after adjustments are added.

Sneaky edit: An email to UQ might solve our problem if someone wants to volunteer themselves

Apparently,

I called QTAC and spoke to someone who got in contact with the assessor of my application at QTAC.
He did not say anything about my 2 LOTE bonus points at UQ being rendered useless.

Instead he told me that the 2 bonus points would add on to my 97 ATAR and make me eligible for the course (like how MSO regards the bonus points.)

Or maybe he himself was clueless about this ATAR bonus point differentiator (Unless I get super lucky and my QTAC application gets through.)

QTAC wouldnt say youre rendered useless because technically youre still eligble if they consider 99 unadjusted higher than 99 adjusted, just in not in the realm of competitive because of how many people apply.

A more helpful contact would be UQ themselves (specifically an email to admissions who will actually direct it to the dent faculty because student services wouldnt know), and asking whether 99 adjusted will be ranked lower than 99 adjusted before or after applicants are differentiated on their UCAT score.

Good shout, uq admissions probably another good shout since they have all the info to send off to qtac. I assume qtac probably doesn't have the updated rationale

Exactly, UQ makes the rank lists of applicants. QTAC sorts out the qualifications and selection ranks. You'll get a much better response from UQ about how rank lists are made rather than QTAC.

Hm, they haven't replied an enquiry I've sent 4 days ago now. Just checked my email and still nothing yet, hopefully they answer this one quick
