How come dentistry has a higher cutoff than med? Dont understand the logic

Can we confirm whether Adel Dent gives Umat bonus points to SA applicants?
If no bonus then it makes sense, Dent's 93 is a natural cutoff whereas Med's 80 is heavily discounted at the expense of interstate applicants being pushed to 99.

The Adelaide BDS admissions guide makes no mention of UMAT bonus points, but does appear to give bonus points for ATAR: "Bonus points for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree are available for school leaver applicants who attended a school classified as an equity school in the year they achieved their ATAR, hold a School Card and/or Health Care Card, or who receives (or whose parents receive) a Centrelink means tested income support payment."

Bear in mind that ATAR boosts are not the same as UMAT point boosts. There is no SA scheme for bonus points to UMAT (other than the functional equivalent being applying under a different quota, such as the rural pathway, in which case there are also no bonus points but the cutoff is lower.) None of the above explains the difference in the observed UMAT and ATAR in the Adelaide medicine and dentistry interview cohorts.

What might explain it is if there were to be a change in supply for either of these degrees. I am told by contacts in Adelaide that there may be a change in the number of spots in the Adelaide Dentistry degree owing to fewer facilities being available to them at the new dental school being built adjacent to the new RAH.

There is one scheme Mana, Adel Med brochure states specifically Umat bonus points are given to SA applicants for the purpose of getting more locals to the first round of interviews. What caught us by surprise is the (unpublished) size of the bonus, to the extent that locals needed 80%ile while interstates got pushed up to 99%ile.

Oh right, yes indeed. (For those reading, the bonus points don't make any difference whatsoever for final offers).

I'd say that the Adelaide uni Med probably allocated around 15-17 percentile points for umat. Several people there have gotten med and not dent interviews. Was an SA local and have to friends with umats of low 80's who got new but not dent offers. Got a image of 88 and didn't get dent offer this year :( . I'd say got the first round, everything over 80 and local would get an interview, and much much lower for rural.

So they give bonus points for interview, do they give bonus points for entry as well?

No, it's just for the interview stage so they interview more interstate applicants. Doesn't affect the final weighting, but is still beneficial in the sense that it gives local applicants the chance to interview

I was wondering what's the lowest possible ATAR I can get to have a chance at Adelaide med? I received a 98% for UMAT and am a South Australian applicant.

I thought 98% is good enough to get the 1st round interview for Ade medicine. Are you a school leaver?

No hard data to prove but I think you wouldn't want to be lower than 98.0 . I heard a 98.0 92%ile got a 1st round unbonded place last year but on the other hand, an SA 99.95 (by itself no UES bonus) 86%ile and a 99.8/100%ile didn't get one. Although one later got a 2nd round and one a 3rd round place offer it shows even 99.95 can be just borderline.

It can be argued maybe these two didn't interview well. True, but we don't know for sure you will interview better than they to say you can afford a lower ATAR.

Seem to have sneaked in with a UWS offer :) - got the email today. My combined S1/S2 was 128 which according to many people here is the cut-off for UWS (non-GWS). Will this seriously affect my chances of getting a final offer considering they weight UMAT scores at 1/3?

Well, shite. Just got a rejection from WSU.
University: WSU
Offer: No
UMAT: 89%ile 67/61/51.

Well, at least I've still got universities that take ATAR more seriously. UAdelaide 2nd round, save me pls. My IB score converts gracefully there too.

UWA intv offers come out quite late, can't pinpoint the date but like 3rd week Nov last year. I think they deliberately wait until WACE exams are over.

I'm surprised you didn't get a UNSW offer with 99.95 & 98%ile (@MedDent Adel was notified in Nov last year with 99.95 & 86%ile). More surprising is if this is due to UNSW not receiving your predicted ATAR then the email to you shouldn't say ATAR+UMAT not meeting the cutoff. Maybe a generic email, or maybe you should call UNSW's Mr David Boothey to have it clarified.

If you post your UMAT section scores we can guess why you got no offers from UWS and JMP.

Apologies for this late reply but I was concentrating on finishing WACE marathon in style :) , decided to keep low profile :) and remain incommunicado for a while.

Well, first and foremost, I can confirm that I received JMP interview 2nd round offer after all (sent on 02 Nov at 0744) but I only happened :) to discover it when attempting to clean the junk folder. Somehow, this notification (I have Yahoo email) ended up there. Well, better late than never.

So, JMP - yes but no success with UNSW and UAde, my UMAT is 65/66/73 - probably too low since it seems that my predicted ATAR was not taken into consideration. But there may be more to this.

I spoke with a friend of mine (different school, her UMAT is 92ish, do not know the detailed breakdown, predicted ATAR - well above 99.5%).
She received no (interstate) invitations so far but decided to approach and follow up with UNSW to see how things work.
Amazingly (?), she was informed that the admissions office had 'not received her predicted ATAR' and apparently that was (one of ?) the reason she was not considered. But she is very positive (consulted her school few times) that no request for information (from UNSW) had been recorded.
Moreover, and this sounds quite 'alarming', she was informed that the second (and the last (???!!!)) round of interview invitations will be wrapped up 'by December 23'. But in WA, we will be receiving our ATARs only on 28 December so I am not sure how to read this.

Re UAde what A1 writes above makes sense, I know of one candidate (from WA) who had been invited for 2nd round interview last year (98.2/81). She got the offer eventually but decided to pursue her studies at Monash :)
