Interview offers & dates 2016-17

Sorry, this person got the real offer from UNSW. But, I thought there will be at least 700/800 people (UNSW sent around 500 interview offers) who are qualified for interview offers with such cut-off . Am I wrong ?

The person who got offers from UNSW could clearly get that offer if they interviewed well.

Also given that most people who get an interview are not from NSW (because most of Australia's population is outside NSW), then 500 of them would be first round offers and then the others would be in second round. That's not surprising, is it?

This question is a few days old but let me answer to help clarify for others too. Using your Umat 199 to illustrate we estimate you need Atar 97.0+ to make into the interview round. If actual Atar is below predicted but still above the combined [Atar+Umat] cutoff you remain eligible.

If it turns out they largely interview well and maintain their [A+U] advantage you get locked out as written in the email: "(by 2nd interview round) we will have additional information: .... the total score that is required to gain entry (ATAR + UMAT + interview). If (your [A+U] is so low) you may not be able to gain entry even if you achieved the highest possible interview score. In such cases, we unfortunately will have to withdraw the offer of an interview, as there will be no chance of obtaining a place."

Hi Thanks for this very detailed information. It makes me feel much better since my ATAR will be around 99.00 going by exams I've done so far.

Could you please answer two more questions for me: a) UNSW says they don't treat inter-state students differently? Does Monash do the same b) Can I assume that Monash will have similar cut-off as UNSW?

According to @pi (who was a Monash interviewer last year) Monash does favour Vic applicants but we don't know by how much.

Interview cutoff for interstate applicants to Monash was much higher than for Unsw last year, for example a NSW MSOer with 99.5 & 94%ile didn't get a (regular) offer. But then she got a call to urgently come for a 3rd round after too many 2nd round interviewees didn't turn up! and she got a place too. I guess the silver lining there is although Monash invites relatively few interstaters, if you get an interview high chance you'll get a place.

Can someone please provide evidence or indicate where it is written that UNSW does not give preference to locals? Thanks

The info was on a UNSW Med webpage last year, I can't find it anymore so refer you to this thread
> [Undergrad] - UNSW Interstate Second-Round Interview Offers | Med Students Online

"3. Applicants interviewed on January 24, 2012 (ie. interstate) will be subject to exactly the same interview and process as those interviewed early.

4. If the results of their interview, together with their academic and UMAT results, exceed the cutoff that was required for entry into UNSW Medicine in the main round of offers (ie. local), they will be offered a place in the UNSW Medicine course in the late round of offers.

5. It must be stressed that applicants interviewed on January 24, 2012 will not be disadvantaged in any way in this process."

This together with "Applicants are offered interviews on the basis of their combined predicted or actual ATAR and their actual UMAT scores. Interviews are offered to the highest ranking applicants until all interview places have been filled" indicates locals don't get any extra marks.

If your daughter with 99%ile UMAT hasn't got a UNSW interview it's most likely because her school didn't reply to UNSW's request for predicted ATAR, or she didn't submit the required direct application to UNSW. If she did submit one she's still in the running for the 2nd round of offers in January, I suggest you call Mr David Boothey to verify.

Thanks for your lengthy explanation, A1. The school did submit her predicted ATAR to UNSW (but did not disclose it ) and the school checked that UNSW had received the 'predicted ATAR" ( following her letter from UNSW) and was led to believe that local applicants have preference. Of course she may receive an interview offer post results but I think the school was led to believe she would need 99+ ATAR for admission despite her UMAT 99%.

and was led to believe that local applicants have preference.

The school must have misinterpreted, local applicants have preference for UNSW first round of interviews not preference for getting interviews.

Of course she may receive an interview offer post results but I think the school was led to believe she would need 99+ ATAR for admission.

In our estimation 99%ile UMAT would need around 97.0 as a bare minimum (ie. will need a near top interview score to make up) whereas 99+ would give her a better than fair chance. In other words 99+ is neither mandatory nor sufficient for admission, it works in combination with UMAT and interview scores.

That had been my understanding so I hope we are correct !!

Adelaide University Umat Cut offs for 2016 first round
Med- 80

We've seen interstate applicants 98%ile not offered an Adel interview. If that 80%ile cutoff wasn't for rural it means bonus of 25-30 Umat marks to SA applicants, quite unhealthy for a health course haha.

In other unimportant news, I just read on its website Unsw is holding 3 rounds of interviews: the main Nov round for NSW applicants, an early Jan round for NSW applicants whose actual Atar lift them above the calculated cutoff, and a late Jan round for interstate. So any references earlier in this thread to Unsw 2nd round for interstate should be read as 3rd round.
