That's what I was thinking too but, you know, you see the number and go, "Well, there goes my hopes and aspirations down the drain. Yay." (Mostly kidding.)

Any thoughts on Monash?
I reckon if unsw gave you 5% chance you have at least 10% chance at monash, what does mana or a1 say?

Okay, so I'm slightly (read: incredibly) freaking out right now. So, my ATAR is 97.6 (IB 39) - was predicted at least 99.70 (IB 43) and then I screwed up exams. However, I might get it jumped up to 98.90 (IB 41) if remarks work out well. My UMAT is 96% percentile. So, UNSW is giving me a potential 5% (oh joy), so yeah, emotions are rampant at the moment.

My questions are:
  • would you say there's any point to the UNSW interview?
  • do you think there's a likelihood I can get into Monash?
If UNSW is offering 5% chance with this ATAR and UMAT, it is a good set of data to work out the criteria for lowest rank entry into UNSW medicine!!!

There is a 5% point to the UNSW interview. I would probably go for it just in case, provided it doesn't clash with anything important (such as a trip you've been saving up for for a while or something). I would say your chances would increase to maybe 20% if your re-mark is successful which does make the interview worth it if you are really that sure that you will get bumped up. If your marks get bumped up and you missed the interview you would potentially be kicking yourself about it so unless you have a very good reason not to attend, I'd go.

re: Monash - your chances would be about the same as at UNSW; you might have a slight advantage if you are Victorian.

Thank you for the advice and info!

Are you saying that you have been offered an interview at UNSW with ATAR = 97.6 and UMAT = 96th?

If the wording in your UNSW email is the same as others then it says if you score 100% in the interview you have a less than 5% chance. Is this correct?

if yes, then you need to a) get 100% and b) hope that others perform poorly.

If you live in Coogee then go for it... if you live in Perth..... your decision.

indeed. 97.6% + 96th for subsequent round interviews. you could guess maybe 97%+ 95th for first round.....
but I know someone who did better than that and did not get an interview.

Is it not easier to get into monash than unsw?

Anyone alleging Unsw favours local applicants please take note of this case. 97.60/96%ile is right on the borderline of my estimates in the criteria table, thus the 5% chance, and Unsw is fair enough to still offer an interstate interview. We have not seen posted any local applicants who got an interview with lower scores.

For @renaissaence if you are in the running for 2-3 other unis and the travel costs for this interview are not easily afforded I would say not worth it.
But if this is your 1 or 2 chances, go for it.

My concern is if @renaissaence is interstate to Monash s/he might not get an interview there let alone any chance.

Yup, that's it. I figured as much. Good times...

UNSW also has a Medicine form, right? Could it be centred around that too?

Hm, okay. Yeah, the problem is I'm from NZ which makes the situation tougher. Thanks though!

You mean the direct application to Unsw? Its content is to "set the tone" for the interview, it is not used in the determination.

Do you think an increased score due to a remark (which I'm currently praying for) could improve my chances?

How soon will you get the outcome of this re-mark? It may not be in time for the offer rounds.

Remarks for IB are quick, but they don't boost scores too often. I had 3 remarks, all to no avail. Sorry, hopefully, you will do better.

Just curious, what subjects did you have remarked? I got TOK remarked and the results still haven't returned.

I was told up to 16 days for IB re-marks to come back when I had mine re-marked (Chem,Physics, Economics EE & Maths IA). I think all in all they came back within 2 weeks. That was for the May exams; maybe it's quicker turnaround time for Nov exams as there are fewer candidates?

Is it not easier to get into monash than unsw?

As a rough guide, Monash and UNSW are approximately the same difficulty to obtain entry to as an undergraduate student due to them both:

a. weighting UMAT/ATAR/Interview 1/3 each
b. being Go8 universities in one of Australia's two largest cities
c. being the most subscribed undergrad, non-provisional medicine universities in their respective states
d. having similar numbers of places.

Given that they have so much in common and they obtain applicants from pretty much the same student cohorts all around Australia, the difficulty of getting into either of these is approximately the same. The only real notable difference in terms of candidates is that Monash gives small bonuses to the students in their state.
