JMP JMP: General Entry Discussion

Yeah I understand they have been sent out - I should have denoted outside of NSW,QLD & ACT for interstate. - i'll fix that now.
Oh sorry to not answer your question, but they just have a set number of people they offer to, and they pre determine a time slot for everyone and then they just see whether people turn up or not. They don't do a booking and top ups as they have like 800 ish people. So they have already designated the spots they are just yet to notify to the interstate as far as I know. And there are a certain amount of Aboriginal and Rural spots for applicants, but the rest are distributed based on score and there are no location biases. Hopefully I can be of help.

So this might get lost in the hype of interviews but had a general question about offers - well related to JMP.

As JMP only sends out offers to NSW/QLD/ACT students first and waits on interstate offers (hoping that students take offers from their own state) I had 3 questions:
1. Is it 800ish students total - including rural, aboriginal & interstate + normal.
2. Is there 170 places up for grabs evenly or are aboriginal/rural guaranteed a certain % of these places.
3. Do interstate universities offer positions before JMP (i.e. December round) meaning that many of those interstate applicants who could have been invited to an interview, could already have a position at their respective university - i.e. meaning less overall applicants (<800)?

Thanks LMG! A1 TKAO and whoever else loves answering these sort of questions :)
1. Yes it is 800ish students including all that other stuff. As you are well aware cutoffs for rural and indigenous applicants are way below the normal streams.
2. Generally, rural is a quota styled things (at least in UWA and if I'm not wrong also curtin) while ATSI is more variable. Depending on the number that apply, there is a very high chance that all will be accepted since very few usually do.
3. Yes. Some universities do. For example, UWA and curtin send out first round offers in the december round, which means that some people who would have gotten, let's say, a JMP interview would forfeit since they already have a spot. Not too sure about how other states work however. I'm not sure whether this would prompt JMP to send out top up interview offers since it would be in December before people forfeit (a little late) and also JMP interviews quite a number of people above their quota.

1. Thanks - I figured this was the case
2. I know personally around 30 ATSI go through into the interview process at least and im fairly sure JMP has a minimum amount they want in based from their prospectus. I think it is a similiar deal for rural spots being held too but i wasn't sure. Essentially - assuming not up interviews happen (which i doubt as they already have 800 people for 170 positions) how many spots are "open" once you take out the ones held for rural/atsi and are those roles subjected to BMP based on their interview rankings?
3.Excellent - This is what i was thinking too - Just needed to see if my thoughts were correct!

2. I don't know the specifics of trends in rural/atsi placement spots. Probably need to ask someone more knowledgeable than me. Seeing at though you say around 30 ATSI apply to JMP, I reckon that rural + atsi spots would combined make up up to 150 people, so maybe like 30-40 spots? This is just a guess. On the topic of how many of these are subject to BMP, I'm not sure either. However I know that UWA (I use UWA as the gold standard because I want to go there :p ) has separate streams for each, and on top of that each stream has its own share of 28.5% of BMP positions. Therefore, even if your scores as a normal applicant are above the 28.5% of the offered cohort, if you are in the bottom 28.5% of the NORMAL offered cohort, you would still get a BMP.

Is anyone else having trouble booking accomodation at UNE for their interview? For some reason it's not applying the discount, and I added all my details incl email and accidentally submitted the form, so I'm worried that I'll have to pay the full price.
Also, I wasn't able to book another room for my dad alongside my booking? Will I have to do a separate one, and hope that we get put in closeish rooms?

Did you put in 'JMP' as the group code? The instructions on the interview manual are a bit confusing. You can always try and call UNE accommodation tomorrow. I think you will have to do the room for your dad separately at full price, but maybe try and call UNE after you've made both bookings and kindly request to have both rooms close together.

Yeah I did, and it looked like it worked, like it told me to book within a certain range of days for the JMP interview. But when I looked at the price, it was the normal $64. I'm not sure... I'll def call tomorrow! Thanks!

Hi All, to those that received JMP offers, did it stipulate whether you were considered rural or not? I received an interview offer but could not see any indication of whether my rurality had been assessed.
Cheers

I never really thought about this but good question. I must have been considered through the rural pathway as the cutoff was 2840 and I have a 2800. My invite says my interview is at the UNE faculty of rural medicine but otherwise there’s no mention of rurality, so no. A friend of mine from VIC who got a rural offer was offered an interview @ UON so I guess the UNE part doesn’t tell us anything.

Okay, well i was below 2840 as well, so maybe I have been placed in the rural quota. However, is 2840 a confirmed number or purely MSO speculation? I might ring tomorrow to find out, as there is no indication when reviewing your submitted application on the UON website either.

The interview process for people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander backgrounds is not the MSA/PQA that rural and general applicants attend. I doubt those applicants are included in the ‘interview invites sent out by email’ figures that have been quoted.

I agree with them not being included in the interview invites sent out by email - more if they were included in the 800 total.

I was above rural cut-offs for both JMP and WSU the year I applied to them as a rural applicant and it was very clear that I was being included in the rural sub-quota at both. If you have provided the rural paperwork, this is the group in which you'll be considered at both universities.

I'm hoping if anyone can offer insights on JMP Assessment MSA/PQA sessions. Do I have to do my homework on these? Also, do you think UCAT Medentry preparation courses are worthwhile. I'm just asking the latter question for a friend.

No one can give you personal experience information on the JMP assessment as we are required to sign a Non-disclosure Agreement when we arrive. If you look around this site there is plenty of information about how to approach interviews more generally and you can look at the PQA website.

Thank you for your reply. I was unaware of the Non-disclosure Agreement.

Yes it appears to be the same with UCAT.

> Assessment of personal qualities
"Invitations to attend the Joint Medical Program Assessment will be based on UCAT ANZ test results." (No mention of ATAR/GPA)

"Selection Policy
Applicants shall be ranked for selection in descending order of merit according to results in Stage 2 of the Assessment of Personal Qualities. Applicants with the same score in Stage 2 will be sub-ranked on the basis of their performance in Stage 1 (the UCAT)."
Quick question; does Stage 1 refers to the UCAT and Stage 2 refers to the MSA/PQA ? Are there any other stages after Stage 2? Do they consider the ATAR if they have 2 applicants who are similar in both Stage 1 and 2? Does the 180 places comprise of 150 school leavers, undergraduates, graduates, interstate, international, domestic, GCE A level holders and 30 places are for rural? Does anyone have any information on how many rural applicants they have had in the past ? This is really over whelming!

Does anyone know how to opt-in for the BMP? I’ve tried reviewing my submission but couldn’t find the BMP option.
