Med and Dent - 2018 Entry (Place Offers and Discussion)

it's really not though, the jackpot is the best possible outcome and getting offered bmedres provisional entry really isn't..

and uhhh, no i'm probably not fun at parties...

i mean it's not bad, it's just not much of a jackpot

I think it's all about perspective. I know many people who are fighting nail and tooth in degrees like biomed and science, without any form of guarantee, just to get into medicine. I'm certain most of them would regard a guaranteed entry pathway as a "jackpot."

Also, not everyone's goal is to be a doctor in the shortest time possible. Some are just happy with the opportunity to be one in the first place.

At work experience a doctor told me that her biggest regret was not having more fun in her youth. Considering this, a provisional entry might be a "jackpot" in the sense that it gives you time to have a bit of fun, learn about non-medicine subjects, and mature before you begin medicine.

Again, just depends on how you look at it.

Spot on here.

Also hitting the nail on the head with this one.

Nycryte as a high achieving school leaver with provisional entry to med, but who obviously wanted a different offer, I can understand why you’re making these comments. But please think about these things from other people’s perspective; allow others to celebrate exciting news and a huge achievement without pointing out why their offer could’ve been better.

Taking a leap and assuming you’re a Kiwi and you have to move regardless: I think the Monash offer will be 5 years, vs 7 (?) at USyd? And maybe Melbourne is slightly cheaper as far as living costs go? Did you get a scholarship for either? Or have friends/family living in either?

Congrats, btw!!

Thanks first of all and yeah, I'm a Kiwi.
I won't be able to get a scholarship at Monash (at least for my first year) so I'd have to pay uni and living fees upfront and I have family friends who live right next to the uni.
At Sydney, I have relatives and have the Chancellor's Award for my undergrad years but it'll probably be more expensive living wise especially since I applied for residence so late (I wasn't expecting to get into USyd lol)
I hope some of that made sense :)

Edit: Yeah. It's 5 years at Monash and 7 years at USyd (3 years for my BSc and 4 years for my MD)

Congrats on your high achievement. It's really a "happy pain":D Have you decided? If I am in your position, I most likely choose Monash.

Hahahahaha. That's what I thought. But I've ended up choosing Sydney because of the opportunities it presents i.e. studying abroad and because I'm fairly familiar with Sydney. It also helps that I have a scholarship which eases my financial burden.
In the long run, what's 2 years extra study at Syd gonna mean in a career path where you're constantly learning.
But hey, if any of you potential Monash peeps are still waiting for a possible offer, there's one extra space for you ;)

I have a friend who got a 99.95 atar and it means automatic entitlement to a scholarship at Monash?

Not for us Kiwis unfortunately (unless you did IB here in NZ)

Edit: If I did/could get this, then I'd probably be swayed to go to Monash, but that's not the case from my research/contact with Monash :(

Oh right, we both took IB so that would make more sense. :/ Amazing that you got offers to both though! Congrats on such great CIE results

Cheers! Honestly, you IB peeps had it so much harder when it came to med school entry compared to us CIE boys (I'm assuming you're also from NZ and if so, where are you studying this year?)

So angry haha I wish I had done CIE or NCEA if I'd been set on Aussie - I'm going to Otago for now :) Best of luck in Sydney!

Thank you so much. And best of luck to you too in Otago (I'm assuming you'll be flying there soon if you're not already there/have always lived there.) Don't burn too many couches blah blah blah *insert classic Otago Uni stereotypes about drinking and burning couches*

I would have thought more carefully about this. Though the legislation change was struck down last year the gov can still re-introduce it in another form and if it passes, NZ students will be up for 35k/year or more tuition fees instead of 11k. Better get it out of the way asap.

Hey A1! I thought that with the previous legislation change, so long as you were enrolled before the legislation passed, you would still be paying the CSP fee for the duration of your degree?
Although I'm guessing it might be different for graduate entry like Sydney U, but for Monash, wouldn't it remain the same fee if a legislation like the one before was passed?

Aye. I indeed thought about this but at Monash, I'd be paying like 34K a year for 5 years for tuition and living expenses (without a student loan and upfront too) while at Syd, my undergrad years are basically taken care of and I've got residence sorted out for much cheaper than if I were to live in Melbourne.
Another reason is because if the legislation were to be brought up again, it'd be done in 2021 and I think our Labour government would put up a lot more of a fight than what our National (equiv of your Conservative) did (at least I bloody well hope so.) In addition to this, I would be able to apply for a student loan too (but I totally get it, I'd still be paying 35K for 4 years vs 35K for 2)
