Monash Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion

Uhh Dr Google says this
There's Dr Google and there's people who misunderstand Dr Google :p

In a normal (i.e. non-COVID) year Monash holds 4 MMI days for rural + Vic applicants. Ex-Monash interviewer pi reliably told us they run 4 circuits so do the maths : 4 circuits * 8 stations * 4 sessions/day * 4 days = 512 slots. (Monash then makes ~210 first round offers to these, ratio 210:512 = 1 in 2.4)

Interstate interview is only one day of 3 circuits = 96 slots but many don't turn up after having received a home state offer. For them Monash appears to set aside 240-210= 30 places (plus whatever number of declines from the first lot of 210).

Then why does Dr Google say close to 1,000? Because that includes a separate lot for the 75 graduate-entry places and possibly international applicants.

Any predictions on the number of interviews they do this year - like higher or lower overall? Also - how many 2nd+ round offers do Monash give? I can't imagine it would be too many since it is a high demand uni right?

Second-round offers for Victorian applicants don't seem to exist (neither do upgrades from bonded to unbonded), and any declined spots are transferred straight to the interstate offer pool. This suggests a close to 100% acceptance rate (makes sense after all, if you were a Victorian applicant, why wouldn't you choose Monash? - UniMelb Chancellor's notwithstanding) and allows the interstate pool to fluctuate between years, although not by much.

Things could change this year though, with Monash moving to its strange two-interview-round system.

Sorry no idea since this year is so different and I haven't kept track.

My own favourite story about this is in my year when Monash had a few spare 2nd-round places, they didn't back offer to Vic applicants. Instead they called a few interstate applicants (who didn't get invited earlier) to fly in urgently for top-up interviews and they all got an offer afterwards.

To make this story more interesting, one of the students in this top-up group was an MSOer who already got JMP & UQ offers. She much preferred JMP for its 5 years whereas her parents pressured her to take 7-year UQ being Go8. The Monash 5-year Go8 top-up solved all her dilemmas :)

would 2nd round offers for Monash be a bit more common perhaps for rural students since interstate people could reject if they get another offer closer to them?

Not sure if this has been posted before but what's the likelihood of getting into the undergraduate medical program if you've been invited to an interview. Do most people make their way in easily or a lower chance?

See my post above for Vic applicants : (Monash then makes ~210 first round offers to these, ratio 210:512 = 1 in 2.4)

Monash says on the website equal weightings for ATAR/UCAT/Interview, so going into the interview with higher ATAR+UCAT gives better chance. Thanks to the 1 in 2.4 offer ratio those with near top ATAR+UCAT need very little from the interview score to be in the top 40% overall for a place (imagine your class do 3 equal-weight exams and you already have 2 near tops, you need little from the 3rd to be in the class top 40%).

Otoh those with lower ATAR+UCAT still have a fighting chance with an excellent interview. Unlike at Adelaide they'd have near zero chance due to the 1 in 5 offer ratio.

How many of those 210 spots are for normal applicants - so excluding rural, indigenous and Monash guarantee entry schemes?

I've seen stats of 24% rural in Monash undergrad med so around 55-60. Indigenous is typically 5-10.

I'm not sure how the MG scheme works - whether Monash sets a specific quota of places, or MG applicants compete in the main pool with the help of their boosted ATAR, or could be a combination of both. Difficult to pin down numbers.

Out of curiosity, what’s the lowest MG and SEAS ATAR that you’ve seen gain entry into Monash med?

Is Monash still giving out 2nd round offer interviews? Just want to know for change of preferences
Not a hundred percent sure about this, but I’m pretty sure they Give interview offers all at the same time To everyone, so yes, technically they’ve given out all of them. However I’m sure if someone rejected their interview then they’d give it to someone else.

Does anyone know how Monash calculates the final scores by ATAR/UCAT/interview? I know they are weighed 1/3 1/3 1/3, but 1/3 what?
For example, 90%UCAT+ 99.95ATAR , and 99%UCAT + 99 ATAR, which one gets higher position if they have the same interview scores?

Uhh I think it was stated before that 1% in the UCAT is roughly equal to 0.1 ATAR

So depends on how "low or high" the ATAR and UCAT score was as Monash uses aggregate for ATAR and actual UCAT score for the UCAT - not the rounded ATAR figure and UCAT percentile that you are provided with :)
