Monash Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion

Yeah, I looked at the data that's been shared here so far and that seems to be the case. Nobody has reported an interview with a UCAT lower than 98th, and some of those have been top-ups. Pretty bizarre method!

It’s not really a bizarre method! UAdel, JMP, and WSU all use it for giving out interviews (ATAR hurdle or not considered at all), and UQ use it for offers (ATAR hurdle). What could be bizarre is they’re only going down to 98th percentile, but that clearly represents the small amount of spots on offer for interstate applicants.

ETA: also, we’ve had a number is MSOers recently assume an ATAR conversion for their IB/A levels without actually checking and simply reporting here that they’ll have 99.95. I think this user is one of them. It may be accurate, but it may not.

No I didn't mean it like that - I think it's bizarre to use a different method for selecting interstate applicants compared to Victorian applicants (unless they also used this method with Victorians - I haven't analysed the data that closely). It looks like UWA has done something similar this year as well. Weird to decide the best way to rank applicants from your own state is somehow not the best way to rank applicants from interstate.

VTAC and other TACs say my notional ATAR is 99.95 and I assume it will be similar for Winger (same IB score). IB to ATAR conversion rates are laid out clearly by the TACs so I don't think ATAR's the problem here, rather Monash is putting a helluva lot of weighting on UCAT this year (for interstate applicants at least).

It sure doesn't give me much hope for securing a place offer though, seeing as literally every person there is rocking a 99.5+ ATAR and a 98+ UCAT lmao

Just for data - I am from Qld, OP 2 (ATAR 98.5) and UCAT 3040 (97%ile) - no interview offer. The cutoffs did go high indeed!

You would you gotten an interview in the first round considering your high scores!! Did Monash call or email you? when?
I was emailed yesterday afternoon after I had assumed I hadn't gotten an interview. Presumably the interstate bias is really significant as discussed in this thread.

This might stir the pot a bit more but I got an interview from Monash last night with a 96%ile and only A*A*A. They stated that I was given an interview because other people had declined.
What was your precise UCAT score?

I was also wondering whether there’s much chance for me seeing as my scores are a bit lower than other interstates. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Theoretically there’s very little difference between a 96th and 98th UCAT score (and whatever your ATAR was), and thus, if you’ve been invited for an interview, then you’re in with a good shot. HOWEVER: if Monash uses Z scores to compare only the applicants they invite for interview, or alternatively do something similar to UNSW’s ranking system, this could see you at the bottom of the applicant pool and thus need a top interview score to land a place offer. I don’t know what Monash does so I’ll let A1 comment further if he has any extra insight.

Do you know what that converts to as an ATAR? Perhaps a new theory would involve specific section weightings for UCAT scores like WSU. Can you please post your scores in the interview invite data thread? (That goes for anyone else that has received a Monash interview). 2020 Entry Interview Invites - Collated (DATA ONLY)

Just adding some more stats:

My atar was initially 99.80 due to a calculation error, but was actually 99.95. Monash used my 99.80 to rank me for an interview as that is what they had at the time and that paired with a 3090 (98%) was not enough for a first interview but I got a top up.

Another friend of mine from NZ who got 99.95 and 3000 UCAT got an interview straight away.

The numbers this year look extremely severe. Two years ago Ruffle was given an interstate interview with 99.10 & 96th-98th %ile. I hope that means there will be very few interviewees this year thus very high offer chances for those attending.

I have a friend who got a monash invite with a 99.95 + a 97th but I have another friend who didn't get one even though he got a 99.9 + a 92nd. Evidently, the cutoffs have skyrocketed, even when compared to last year.

Does anybody know how the SEAS works?? I got a 98.85 which with SEAS should equal to a 99.85. I also received a 99%tile for UCAT but didn’t receive a Monash interview. Does Monash not use SEAS for Medicine interview invites?

No clue on the VTAC conversion. The most I have to work off is that it’s around 99.3-99.65ish for uwa so perhaps it is somewhat even remotely similar for VTAC hopefully

How do you know SEAS increases your ATAR by exactly 1.00?

Just out of curiosity can someone who went to the Monash interview today comment on how many candidates were there? And also was it just the one session that started at 12?

Two circuits at 1pm and two circuits at 3 pm. 32 candidates altogether.
