Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)

I second this request for a picture of your cute dog @LMG :)

I also received the '7 Reasons' email. I was so excited to see an email from UTAS then equal parts disappointed and annoyed when I saw the subject :(

I can top the email thing because I got a PHONE CALL from the SCHOOL OF MED today! It ended up being about paperwork for another degree I'm enrolled in but there was definitely a heart in the mouth moment when she said "it's X from the School of Medicine...".

[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] Offers UTAS 2017 (Discussion)
@LMG

Okay so, I called up UTAS today, and the lady said 2 offer rounds have been made to date, and that further offers will depend on current offer recipients rejecting their offers for UAC or QTAC offers etc. There may be only a few or there may be many as these are essentially top-up offers and not further rounds. I think all the non-standard interstate offers have already been made, and that any further ones will only depend on competitiveness. UTAS may not admit it but I think they have severely reduced the number of spots for non-standards this year hence the jump from ~95/96 UMAT to 99.

Non-standard = 99%ile with overall at least 205+ (lowest reported on MSO 206 but my overall 204 = no offer)!

Thanks for calling and relaying the info. Here's hoping a huge bunch of declines begin to roll in!

any view on non-standard Tas applicants?

any view on non-standard Tas applicants?
I believe both interstate and Tas non-standard applicants are considered in the same competitive pool, unless applying through rural pathway (whic Tas non-stds would likely be able to do).

Yeah, the rural factor is the only differentiator at non-standard level.

I'd say you're right re. the reduced numbers. It fits with the wording that's in the FAQ currently, though is at odds with reports from admissions when I've called and asked. Did you speak to general admissions, or the School of Medicine? I think it's pretty poor form to move the goal posts AFTER the fact, but it's looking more likely that this is exactly what they've done.

It seems counterintuitive (financially) for the University to reduce non-standard numbers in the wake of this change (for this year and next), because it's people who are already mature aged students that are less likely to do the (essentially useless to most of them) BMedRes pathway, whereas school leavers, I'd think, would be more likely to do this. Reject a mature aged student and they'll go elsewhere/move on with their life. Reject a school leaver and they'll take the BMedRes offer.

The counter to this argument is that whether they accept or reject non-standards they will anyway fill the places.

My view is that the "guaranteed" pathway via BMedRes is a policy from the school to enlarge the "catchment area" for candidates beyond the Tas school leavers group. They can pick and choose who they offer the guaranteed places to and they would only do that if there was some benefit to the school. I think that the same argument can be made for non-standards. People with some life experience and potentially outstanding grades can add a lot to the school.

All philosophy I guess.... let's see what happens.

Are you sure the two offer rounds that have already been released are not just the Tasmanian Year 12's (23/12) and the Interstate Year 12's (6/1) offers which have been previously reported? The two interstate non-standard offers that have been reported could barely be considered a round of offers as none others have been reported here. :/ They seemed more like they were released independently of either round.

Those 2 offers were released as part of the first round I believe. There may have been more that were not reported on here, but all we know is that the cut-off is extremely high.

Anyone get a guaranteed offer with BMedRes? It's the one where they only offer to 20 people and you gotta go through 3 years of BMedRes and then guaranteed a place in med (extra 5 yrs) afterward... I didn't get it, just want to know if anyone else has got it yet

I think we have had one person (at least) report this, yes.

ETA: Yes, confirming, @kkloveskk reported an offer of this type with ATAR 91.75 and UMAT 79 on December 20th.

ughhh why is it such a competitive year this year :(

There's no way this year being extra competitive is enough of an explanation for the (lack of) non standard offers released to date. NO WAY. All other unis have had relatively little movement with cut offs (where offers have been released so far), so for UTAS to claim a (minimum) 13%ile point hike in first round offers on the basis of 'competitiveness' alone is bollocks!

The idea of the guaranteed entry path is that you are "just" outside the MBBS list.

If standard, interstate, rural 91.75/79 is just outside the MBBS list then that is not consistent with the 99+ UMATs that are being discussed for non-standards unless the number of non-standard places has been reduced to phone box size.

Hey all UTAS hopefuls,

Just got off the phone with a 'faculty officer' in the Faculty of Health.

Q. Are there less non-standard spots for 2017?
A. "Not aware of any ruling that has resulted in changes to non-standard spots."

Q. Are 2017 cutoffs higher?
A. "I'm afraid I can't comment, we don't view assessments."

Q. Have all offers gone out?
A. Offers are done by something called Central Assessment Group and "they've said offers will finish going out by 31 Jan"

Q. Do offers go out in 'rounds' eg first round?
A. "Yes, the offer rounds have completed, we will now offer based on declines."

Q. Can you pretty please look at my application and realise there's been a big mistake and I was meant to get an offer already??
A. "There are no notes against your application, which is not a bad thing, but I'd just ask you to be patient until Jan 31st. I cannot view your scores."

The person I spoke to gave me their direct number and encouraged me to call back on Jan 31st if I haven't received an offer.

Sorry to have zero new or interesting updates.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure they haven't. Because cut-offs jump like 6 percentile points when you change nothing because magic.

thanks and interesting....

I wonder what the 31 Jan date is about. We know that is not the end of offers because semester starts on 27 Feb and offers will be made up to and after that date based on declines.

If I read between the lines, I am guessing that offers - including some not based on declines - will continue to be made until 31 Jan.

This is, of course, pure speculation.

This is the date that an admissions officer kept quoting me recently, too, without really giving any clue as to its significance. I think she said something along the lines of "if you've not heard anything prior, call back on the 31st and I'll have a clearer idea of where you are in the queue". I didn't take much notice of it at the time, because she then proceeded to log into my application specifically, and amended her advice to "oh, actually, you should definitely hear something in the next week".

That was 2 weeks ago.
